Round-off 1/2 on, Layout 1/1

Named after

At various times, the gymternet has futilely tried to name this vault after Khorkina, Mustafina, and both. All attempts have been unsuccessful. The vault exists in the code without a name. It is quite rare, with many of the top gymnasts who use the round-off 1/2-on entry for their second vault tending to progress right from the Lopez to the Cheng and skip this forward-landing intermediate step. Early-years Aliya Mustafina is a notable exception to the rule.

You will often hear round-off 1/2-on style vaults referred to as “Yurchenko 1/2 on,” which is fine, though I don’t use it. The term Yurchenko refers to the round-off vault entry without any twisting in pre-flight. When a half-twist is added, it becomes a different entry that isn’t a Yurchenko. Yurchenko is not a synonym for round-off. It’s a style of vault, of which this is not one.

The valid counter-argument to that would be that using Yurchenko 1/2 on is no different than referring to a skill as a Shaposhnikova 1/2, even though the Shaposhnikova is its own different, specific skill. Which is a good point. Other counter-argument: the round-off 1/1-on vaults are classified in the same family as the Yurchenkos, so why shouldn’t the round-off-1/2 on vaults be? Also a good point. So whatever.
