It’s time to don your most formal sparkle pants, pick only your 1800 classiest crystals, and spray on your orangest tan. The NCAA national championship has arrived.
Oklahoma comes to the table as the #1 team, clear winner of the semifinal day, and the defending champion. LSU comes in as the #2 national seed, Florida comes in as the SEC champion and first semifinal winner, and Minnesota comes in as the people’s champion.
Intro videos: Oklahoma has an AI horse in walking through a palace, Florida has Tim Tebow doing a voiceover about sticking landings, LSU has levitating crowns, and Minnesota has…an outline of the state of Minnesota. I’m worried Minnesota wasn’t invited to the Most Unhinged Award zoom planning session.

After 1
Oklahoma 49.600
LSU 49.5125
Florida 49.3875
Minnesota 49.2625
Oklahoma did not have the vault rotation of the semifinals but still came through with a 49.600, which is a useful pace. LSU will thank the final three on floor for getting them the 49.5 everyone definitely needs on floor. Florida was able to drop the fall but was too checky overall in that beam rotation and has work to do on floor.
Moving Arana to the anchor spot after struggling in the semifinal didn’t work out for Florida there. Moving the gymnast you’re afraid might fall to the anchor spot is a January decision, not an April decision. You need to put your sure-fire 10 last.
Rotation 2
Zeiss – VT – LSU – Y1.5, hop forward and some knee position. 9.8375

Blakely – FX – Florida – double front to stag jump, feet but good control – tour jete 1/2 is out of control, misses position, which is unusual for her, and not in control of combination – back 1.5 to layout is solid. 9.9125, but…leaps?

Harris-Miranda – FX – Florida – double tuck, some leg separation and chest position on landing, shows control – switch side 1/2 to straddle – back 1.5 to 1/2 to double stag, not under control with a travel back
Lyden – BB – Minnesota – candle mount, good – wolf double, hit – bhs loso, comfortable landing – cat leap to switch side, a little under, solid landing again – 1.5 dmt, somewhat off to the side, stuck. 9.9125
After 2

LSU 98.9875
Florida 98.8375
Minnesota 98.7125
Everyone scored almost the same thing in that rotation, from 49.450 to 49.4875. Once again Oklahoma wins the rotation but gains basically nothing. In comparison, Florida behind LSU on floor, LSU behind Oklahoma on vault, Florida behind Minnesota on beam, Minnesota behind Oklahoma on bars.

After 3
LSU 148.600
Oklahoma 148.525
Minnesota 148.100
Florida 148.075
Big news is Florida dropping way back after a weak vault rotation with lots of hops forward. Other big news is Oklahoma having issues on beam. They got through it with a score, but LSU’s hit bars rotation allowed them to move ahead. And Minnesota’s hit floor allowed them to move into third. Less than a tenth in it at this point. Can LSU’s beam beat Oklahoma’s floor.

Zeiss – BB – LSU – side aerial and falls – finishes up with an aerial to bhs, hit – switch to split, little waver – switch gainer tuck full. Some big beams coming up.
Blakely with a small step to the side on double front 1/2 out and a 9.950
Crump – VT – Minnesota – y1.5, step forward
Wells – FX – Oklahoma – front tuck to through to double tuck, some chest position and rebound – switch full to wolf full – back 1.5 to front lay, hit. 9.900

Torrez – FX – Oklahoma – DLO, good height, little rebound – good completion on leap combination – front tuck through to double tuck, bounce back. Door open. 9.950
Chio – BB – LSU – bhs mount, solid, looked soo off line from out angle, but good – bhs loso, solid – little tentative on full turn – aerial, works into split jump – switch to split, no trouble – 1.5 dismount, ooooh arm swing with a little hop forward. AH that’s probably decisive.
9.900 for Chio, LSU will finish on 198.075 to Oklahoma’s 198.1625.
Wild finish.
FINAL
Oklahoma 198.1625
LSU 198.075
Florida 197.6875
Minnesota 197.375
Well, you can sure debate it. I don’t have a strong take yet but am trying to create one because, you know. LSU had the more satisfying hit because they didn’t have to count a score like Fatta’s beam, but LSU had enough lower 9.8s in critical positions to counter balance it. Then you’re playing, were the overscores on LSU’s bars more than the overscores on Oklahoma’s floor? And then you have to parse all the other events. And then you turn crazy.
Very strong meet for both teams, either way, with little mistakes. No one had an overwhelmingly championship performance. Basically the whole difference was how the teams did after their second-position fall on beam, and Oklahoma stuck more.
Florida finishes third and will need to once again look at not bringing it to the final day and falling out of contention despite having more than enough talent to win. Minnesota finishes 4th but a strong competition to keep pace with the top teams after their run of upsets.
8th championship for Oklahoma, moving ahead of UCLA on the all-time list.
