Round-off 1/2 on, Layout 1/2 (Lopez)

Known as
Round-off 1/2 on, layout 1/2
Yurchenko 1/2 on, layout 1/2

Named after
Denisse Lopez (MEX) – unofficially

Joining the pantheon of skills that used to be named after people but aren’t anymore, the Lopez was removed from the named skills section of the code of points for reasons that are not well understood. The vault remains popularly known as the Lopez, less as a method of fighting the power and more because this vault is way too cumbersome to describe without a name to associate with it. Round-off 1/2 on, layout 1/2? Pass. Lopez. I wouldn’t care if she never did the vault. Lopez. There it is.

The Lopez is currently quite popular as a second vault. It’s difficult enough to allow gymnasts to use it along with a DTY and realistically contend for the vault final at major world competitions and win vault medals at events like a European Championship. Those hoping to win medals at a world championship or Olympics will aim to turn this vault into a Cheng, but that’s still a relatively rarefied group.
