Round-off 1/2 on, Layout 1/2 (Lopez)

Known as
Round-off 1/2 on, layout 1/2
Yurchenko 1/2 on, layout 1/2

Named after
Denisse Lopez (MEX)

Joining the pantheon of skills that used to be named after people but aren’t anymore, the Lopez was removed from the named skills for unexplained reasons that we can ignore. The vault remains popularly known as the Lopez, less as a method of fighting the power and more because this vault is way too cumbersome to describe without a name to associate with it.

You will often hear round-off 1/2-on style vaults referred to as “Yurchenko 1/2 on,” which is fine, though I don’t use it. The term Yurchenko refers to the round-off vault entry without any twisting in pre-flight. When a half-twist is added, it becomes a different entry that isn’t a Yurchenko. Yurchenko is not a synonym for round-off. It’s a style of vault, of which this is not one.

The valid counter-argument to that would be that using Yurchenko 1/2 on is no different than referring to a skill as a Shaposhnikova 1/2, even though the Shaposhnikova is its own different, specific skill. Which is a good point. Other counter-argument: the round-off 1/1-on vaults are classified in the same family as the Yurchenkos, so why shouldn’t the round-off-1/2 on vaults be? Also a good point. So whatever.
