Despite the fact that gymnasts can still perform them for A value, hip circles with the hips touching the bar are not considered up to the level of difficulty of elite gymnastics—to the point where clear-hip-circle elements are nearly always shorthandedly referred to as simply hip circle elements because that’s the only type of hip circle you’re going to see in a routine.

The code designation for the back hip circle also included the “false pop” where you pop off the bar with your hips and then regrasp, which is a total olde-tyme gymnastics vestige.
