The thief vault is one of the cooler names for any skill in gymnastics, so if you found your way here because you saw the name “thief vault” and said, “Well hey now,” I see you. The thief vault refers to a side leap over the beam in which one leg trails the other before both coming through over the apparatus. You may know it because it was the 1996 compulsory beam mount and probably only for that reason. Because otherwise…why?

A scissor leap over the beam is considered the same skill for the purpose of the code of points, presumably because it also involves the legs going over the beam at different times, but it wasn’t the 1996 compulsory beam mount, so…
