It was a grand finish to the 2023 season as this Denver team, which entered the elimination rounds at a season-low ranking of #13, progressed out of its home regional final by defeating LSU and Michigan to make a return trip to the national championship.

It goes into the books as the second-best result in Denver team history, eclipsed only by 2019’s run to the final.

Life without Lynnzee Brown is of course the daunting prospect facing Denver’s lineups this season, but also deeply significant is the loss of Alexandra Ruiz, who made a career of going up in the front half of the lineup and getting an essential score. It’s a significant handful of routines Denver will need to manage without this year.

Ashley Gallen advanced to Dev Nationals in the 2022 season, finding her best result on vault, where she placed 16th in the Senior B division with a 9.525.

Amanda Hargraves advanced to Dev Nationals in each of her two seasons as a L10, doing so in 2022 as a VT/FX specialist and in 2023 for the all-around, but again finding her best scores on vault and floor, where Denver will hope to get options from her. She also performed beam at Denver’s intrasquad.  

Maddison Reidenbach has been on the radar ever since the early days (i.e. 2019) when she placed 5th AA in her junior session at Dev Nationals. She’ll be a believable lineup member of most/all events and performed in the lineup six on vault and floor at the intrasquad, also bringing the potential of a serious Denver bars project.

Madison Ulrich is among the top L10 stars in this year’s national first-year class, having finished top-3 AA at Dev Nationals in 2019, 2021, and 2023. She’s expected to be in all four Denver lineups immediately with the ability to deliver the team’s top score on any event right from the first meet.

Rosie Casali (SR)

As Casali goes, so will Denver. Casali hasn’t been the anchor position star like a Brown or Hutchinson during her time at Denver, but when she has a big day, she has a big day. Casali set career highs of 9.975 on both vault and floor in 2023, though bars is where she has featured most consistently with a career high of 9.925.

As Denver looks to restock a few lineups with reliable and difficult routines, and increase its weekly scoring potential on floor, Casali looms as a compelling answer.

2023 Event Ranking: 9

As was the plan last year, Denver will hope to put up at least four 10.0 starts on vault on a regular basis, with the handspring pike 1/2 from Madison Ulrich joining the three returning Yurchenko 1.5s from Hutchinson, Mundell, and Casali. It’s not a total sure-thing group—Mundell missed the end of 2023, Casali paired three 9.950s+ with a few short landings down the stretch last season—but it’s a necessary quartet for Denver to reach its potential.

For the rest of the lineup, Mabanta and Brusch present the go-to returning Yurchenko fulls, both of which scored well last year, though most of the other first-years should provide contending options as well.

2023 Event Ranking: 7

Bars was Denver’s strongest event in 2023 and has a solid shot at retaining that position in 2024 with the introduction of Ulrich to the lineup coupled with the return of Mia Hebinck, who went as high as 9.950 in her first season but missed her sophomore year with injury. Denver will hope they can join the top-ranked returning routines from Mundell, Hutchinson, and Casali to form a strong 9.9 core.

Kiley Rorich provided an important set last year that scored a career-high 9.9125 at nationals, which is quite a solid argument for a returning spot. Reidenbach should also make a strong choice, Thompson has competed bars at times during her career, Cooley joined the lineup in the regional final in 2023 for a casual 9.900, and though Iwai hasn’t competed bars for Denver, she performed as the leadoff at Denver’s intrasquad last week. So the depth of 9.9 possibilities is looking hearty on this one.

2023 Event Ranking: 8

Beam was a highlight for Denver last season and should present the least need for change in 2024, though that doesn’t mean change won’t happen. Five of the six lineup members return from Denver’s team record 49.650 on March 5th in Hutchinson, Bella Mabanta, Mundell, Thompson, and Iwai. The plan could be as simple as slotting Ulrich in for Lynnzee Brown and keeping everything else the same, and you would have no problems with that.

That’s especially true because there’s not a lot of beam experience in the rest of the group. Casali has done exhibition before, Reidenbach and Hargraves are new but have routines, and while Ava Mabanta competed just twice last season, her execution level is so high that I’d love to see her make her way into the six this year. (And once this mightily important senior class moves on in the next 1-2 years, her beam figures to become super necessary.)

2023 Event Ranking: 26

Denver’s low floor ranking of 26th last season misstates the team’s ability there to some extent—they also went as high as 49.825 and got 10s for both Brown and Hutchinson—but it was a reflection of road floor performances being the clear weakness in 2023 with a road FX average of just 49.220 compared to 49.443 at home.

In terms of new routines, Ulrich has an open double tuck (and a double layout in her pocket from L10) and will jump to the end of this lineup with Hutchinson, who should be the big star of the six this season. Bella Mabanta was the next most reliable 9.9 on floor last year, so she should also have a spot in this 2024 lineup. Rylie Mundell is typically the leader of the Clean Double Pike Club, so ideally you want her and Rosie Casali in there, as long as it’s a big-score day.

Abbie Thompson competed only sporadic floor last season but is among those who can bring highlight-reel difficulty when able to go. So in terms of Denver looking for that routine that can lift the lineup out of “nice, 9.825” territory, Thompson is a choice.
