2024 Olympics – US Women’s Podium Training

The US team has opted for the Baby Your Shoulder Is A Firework leo for podium.

Breaking news: They’re standing there. I repeat, they’re standing there.

Starting on beam. The warmup order is Chiles, Rivera, Lee, Biles, Carey, which would indicate Chiles in qualification, Carey as the alternate on beam, and Rivera/Lee/Biles for team final—as expected.

Chiles first full set – hits bhs loso loso and aerial to straddle to bhs – wobble on side somi – switch to sissone – side aerial – switch side – double pike, step back. Good one.

Rivera first full set – wolf – side aerial – bhs loso – switch to switch 1/2 to korbut, connected – aerial to split to straddle, tighter, wobble – switch ring, wobble – double pike dismount a bit of a worry, short, chest down, lunge.

How do we express to NBC that the nerds watching this would really just have preferred fixed camera streams of all four apparatuses.

Lee first full set – fall on loso mount – aerial, wobble, before split bhs – pulls around wolf triple – switch to swtich 1/2 to split ring – side aerial loso loso, pulls it out, small adjustment – switch ring, hit – gainer pike full, hop

Biles first full set – switch mount – pause before switch to switch 1/2 to back pike, little adjustment in there – wolf triple, arm wave but hit – aerial, breaks connection to switch straddle – bhs loso loso – side aerial – full in dismount, excellent.

Carey first full set – forward roll – aerial to split to korbut – bhs loso, tight but hit – switch side, solid – switch to switch 1/2 to straddle, connected – side aerial – double pike, step back.

Chiles wins the First Full Beam Routine on Podium merit badge.

Chiles up again – hits front pike mount, couldn’t tell shape really from this angle – works aerial to straddle – again, aerial to straddle to bhs, good connection – working pieces, all comfortable.

Rivera up again to do pieces – wolf double, arm wave wobble – switch to switch 1/2 to korbut, hit – switch ring, solid

Lee up again – not bothering with that mount, just up with a side split mount – wolf triple – aerial, wobble – split to bhs – switch, check to switch 1/2 to split ring jump – side aerial to loso loso and falls – switch ring, check –

Biles again – switch mount to switch 1/2 to back pike, so gets the Plan A combo this time – aerial to split to straddle, hit – wolf triple, more comfortable

Suni is back up again – side split mount again – wolf triple, good – aerial to split to bhs, smoothly connected – switch to switch 1/2 to split ring jump, good – side aerial to a single loso is hit – switch ring – gainer pike dismount no twist, and hit. That seemed like a “get up there and get a hit one out” bare-bones set, and it was much smoother than her previous.

And looks like they’re done on beam. Now we get to watch everyone standing (or sitting!) instead of Italy! Hooray and yippee!

Laurent is singing the “Rotation” song. Simone says, “Uh oh.”

US on to floor. Initial pass warmups. Lots of B roll of Simone. But what does a closeup of her face look like? I’ve never known.

Laurent has been sabotaged by a Jordan Chiles stretch.

Lee first up for her floor set – DLO 1/1, small slide back, little pike – switch ring – split leap full, little hop around – back 1.5 to front full, a little under, slide back – L turn double, gets it – wolf triple – double tuck, bounce back. Solid, fine.

Chiles up next – DLO 1/1, bounce back, stays in – front full to FTDT, small bounce – wolf double – switch – split leap 1.5, about a quarter underrotated – DLO, only small movement – piked shush full. No issues here.

Carey – Moors, hit, step back OOB – DLO, step back  – switch – switch full ish to popa – FTDT, hop back – split leap full, front through to timer. So a downgraded set for her there.

Biles – triple double, bounce back – front full to double double, bounce back OOB – switch to split leap 1.5 – wolf double – Biles, connects to stag, another OOB – switch full – DLO, , small slide. Good.

Rivera up in the alternate spot – DLO 1/1, gets it, a couple steps back OOB – DLO, bounce back – switch ring to switch full to knee – wolf double – front tuck to double tuck, bounce back – split full, a little under split – 2.5 twist, lunge forward

No one had issues in that rotation, though interested in the Carey downgrade. Also Brian is sick and not at PT today.

And that’s all for the US on floor.

On to vault.

First DTY attempt for Suni is hit, a little ragged throughout, step back.

Rivera tries her first DTY and it’s not super close, falls

Chiles does a Lopez, as does Carey, more amplitude on hers, leg separation on the block.

Biles does her first Yurchenko double pike and it’s amazing. Nearly stuck. She’s like, “OK now I can enjoy podium training.”

Lee – another hit DTY, landed with a bit of a stagger and some knee position.

Chiles – DTY, good, her usual medium-sized bounce back. Follows that with a Lopez, solid in the air, large bounce back.

Carey – good secure landing on a Cheng – leg break on block and knees. Follows with a DTY that’s comfortable for her. No Amanar as yet.

Biles – another good Yurchenko double pike, bounce back this time. Does the Cheng, good distance, not a ton of height, hop back.

Another go for Rivera. hits her DTY this time, but chest down and a lunge back.

Chiles back up – another hit Lopez, bounce back

Vault lineup also looks as expected with Suni joining the three doing two vaults and Hezly sitting out. She struggled with her DTY but the others performed as expected, other than I suppose no Amanar from Carey.

“It looks like a closet, but it’s actually a big bathroom.” Overheard at podium training.

On to bars.

Rivera up first and does a first half, gets a little caught up in a toe pirouette but otherwise fine. She’s followed by Chiles, Biles, and Lee, then Carey in the alternate spot. So all lineups look exactly as expected based on podium training, with Biles, Lee, Chiles doing the AA in qualification.

Lee does Nabieva to Bhardwaj in her first touch, hits the mat.

Rivera – weiler 1/2 to toe full to stalder shap to Ricna, hit – pak – maloney to tkatchev, hit – little hesitation on 1/2 turn – FTDT, secure. Good hit.

Chiles – van leeuwen – piked jaeger – toe full to tkatcjev piked to pak, solid – maloney to gienger – FTDT, little hop. She’s been on today.

Biles – weiler 1/2 to maloney to giant full to tkatchev piked to pak, hit – van leeuwen – toe full, little leg break to FTDT, no double twist. Usual formies but solid.

Lee – Nabieva to bhardwaj to van leeuwen, excellent – jaeger to pak to maloney to gienger, smooth – giant full – FTDT, little hop. That was the one. Very good routine.

Carey – toe on to bhardwaj, hit, little leg break – maloney to gienger, solid – yezhova with some legs – van leeuwen – giant full, just does get it around, a little late – FTDT, small hop. A little more ragged than her usual but fine.

Aly is here in attendance.

Rivera back up to dismount, deeper FTDT with step to the side.

Chiles back up – van leeuwen – piked jaeger – toe full to tkatchev piked to pak – maloney to gienger – shorter hs – FTDT, little hop. Another good hit for her today.

Biles back up – weiler 1/2 to maloney to giant full to tkatchev piked to pak, good high tkatchev – van leeuwen – toe full, a little wild, does the Fabrichnova this time and hits with a hop.

Lee back up to do jaeger to pak to maloney to gienger, hits – giant full – timer dismount.

That looks like all the US is going to do on bars. A pretty normal podium training overall. Mostly solid routines, no lineup surprises. Lee had some trouble on beam, but looked good elsewhere. Carey didn’t do her Trials floor difficulty or the Amanar. Things to watch. But otherwise, just some podium training.

  1. Does anyone know the draw for the EF’s for WAG? It was released awhile ago I believe, just curious what it is, will first in qualifications be last up, or first, which event?
