A change for UCLA today to add Anyimi into the vault lineup and drop Webster-Longin, who has been struggling with that 1.5.

Evan and Marz on the call today. Two shrinking violets.

Rotation 1

Lee – vt – ucla – solid stick on yfull, chest lower than her usual to find the stick. 9.900 a high start

Ward – ub – illinois – blind, hits jaeger, some foot form, hits bail – angle in cast hs on high – ftdt, arm wave to control it. 9.750

Moors – vt – ucla – handspring pike 1/2, medium bounce back, solid chest position, extra step back after the bounce into salute. 9.775

Denning – ub – illinois – maloney to bail, leg separations – solid vertical on high – dlo, pikes down, hop forward. 9.725

Marz: “beautiful skills”
Evan: “huge leg separations on everything”

Anyimi – vt – ucla – yfull, larger bounce back, some pike throughout, solid distance. 9.750

Muller – ub – illinois – toe on to maloney to pak, leg separations as well – 1/2 turn on low, angle, rhythm to try to get it, muscle up against bar – dlo, pike down, step back. 9.250

Campbell – vt – ucla – yfull, solid stick, little waver to hold onto it. 9.925. one judge was like, I don’t care.

Knight – ub – illinois – toe on to maloney to bail, better legs on bail, some separation on maloney – higher dlo, little bounce. 9.800

Chiles – vt – ucla – 1/2 on tuck 1/2 and finds a secure stick, foot form, some direction. 9.925

Cho – ub – illinois – maloney to pak, much better form – van leeuwen, legs together – dlo, little bit of pike, holds onto stick on her heels. 9.850

McGowan – vt – ucla – y1.5, pretty large bound forward, some knees and direction

Green – ub – illinois – toe on maloney to pak, leg break – 1/2 turn on low, some hesitation and leg separation – dlo, leans forward to get it. 9.825

After 1: UCLA 49.325, Illinois 48.950

Three strong vaults there from UCLA to get them to a solid number. They had been vaulting 49.1s. Webster-Longin goes in exhibition and keeps it to her feet but short with a step back.

Rotation 2

Coppola – vt – illinois – yfull, good stick on landing, chest forward, more pike than Lee. 9.800

Campbell – ub – ucla – maloney to bail, solid – hits hs on high – double front, cowboy, hop forward. 9.775

Cho – vt – illinois – yfull, another good stick, chest forward, less piked than Coppola. 9.875

Rosen – ub -0 ucla – good hs – toe on to maloney to pak, leg break on pak, hits 1/2 turn on low – tight hs on high – dlo, leg separation, bounce back. 9.800

Gordon – vt – illinois – handspring what happened – overran it and just did a tuck off. 7.6

malabuyo – ub – ucla – a bit short on hs on lowe – maloney to pak, small leg break, solid hs on high – ftdt, holds stick, a little stagger. 9.850

King – vt5 – illinois – solid height on yfull, little soft in legs, small hop back. 9.750

McGowan – ub – ucla – high tkatchev to overshoot/bail hybrid – dlo is nicely stuck, legs together. 9.875

Muller – vt – illinois – best dynamics so far on yfulls, hop in place, some pike. 9.800

Esparza – ub – ucla – good hs – maloney to bhardwaj, hit – van leeuwen, legs together – some tight handstands – dlo, holds the stick, quick arms down. 9.925

Ward – vt – illinois – also finds the stick on her yfull, chest farther forward – best layout in the air. 9.800

Chiles – ub – ucla – good hs – piked tkatchev to pak, comfortable – later on 1/2 turn on low – good hs on high – ftdt, low with a lunge forward

After 2: UCLA 98.550, Illinois 97.975

Illinois vaults 49.025 to UCLA with 49.225 on bars. A lower bars score for UCLA but I like the way the bars judging kept it sensible today and created a separation in routine quality.

Chiles in exhibition spot for UCLA on beam, at least for now.

Rotation 3

Lee – bb – ucla – aerial to split comfortable – bhs loso, wobble, arm wave – switch to a good straddle – full turn, wobble – gainer full stuck. Uncharacteristically wobbly for her. 9.725

Joelson – fx- illinois – double pike, just holds onto the front foot position – high leaps, a little tight on straddle – front to double tuck, step back oob. 9.575

Rosen – bb – ucla – switch to split, solid positions – bhs loso and right off the beam, completely off line, couldn’t get the last layout – 1.5 dmt, step back. Won’t have her SV there either without that second layout. 8.875

King – fx – illinois – double tuck, chest up, bounce back – switch side 1/2 to straddle – 1.5 couldn’t get her punch, foot buckled or slipped, does a bit of a tuck 1/2 to save it in connection. 9.550

Meet falling apart here in rotation 3.

Campbell – bb – ucla – bhs layish-pikeish, secure – switch to switch 1/2 to split, comfortable – full turn – gainer full, stuck. Rotation saved by that notoriously solid beamer Chae Campbell. 9.850

Ward – fx – illinois – rudi, bounce back, some leg separation – switch 1/2 to wolf 1.5, around – front lay to front full to stag, some knees again. 9.750

Moors – bb – ucla – check on valdez – aerial, little pause to bhs but will get it – cat leap to side aerial, little lean – switch to switch 1/2 to beat, hit – front tuck full, stuck. 9.875

Nock – fx – illinois – double pike, good leg form – tries wolf 1.5, under position and rotation – split leap full to jump full is around – front lay to rudi, good rise. 9.825

Alipio – bb – ucla – bhs bhs loso, lean back correction – side aerial, also a small lean – split leap to switch to beat, nice – gainer tuck full hop forward. 9.800

Cho – fx – illinois – ftdt, good height, big bounce back, stays in bounds – split leap 1.5, a little under – front tuck to 2.5, good twisting form, lunge forward – split leap full to jump full. 9.700

Malabuyo – bb – ucla – good wolf turn – bhs loso, smooth – aerial to beat to korbut – split to split ring jump, solid – gainer full, holds stick. 9.900

Muller – fx – illinois – double pike, chest down, step forward, feet throughout – switch 1/2 to wolf full – front lay to front full, controls that one, a bit low – double tuck, secure, chest down. 9.700

Chiles exhibition on beam, a couple hesitations, kind of an awkward dismount, but a hit. Presumably will come back in next week.

After 3: UCLA 147.700, Illinois 146.525

Struggles on floor take Illinois off the pace with a 48.550. UCLA survives beam for 49.150 but that will also take them off the pace established in the last two meets.

Rotation 4

Muller – bb – illinois – beat split 3/4, lean correction – bhs loso, off line and falls – cat leap to side aerial, lean over at the hips, keeps it on – 1.5 dmt, hop. 9.075

Webster-Longin – fx – ucla – front 2/1, awkward rebound bounce forward – back 1.5 to front lay is clean – switch ring to switch 1/2, good legs and feet – rudi to double stag, big travel back, stays in bounds. 9.750

Nataraj – bb – illinois – bhs loso, wobble, turn to the side, leg up – switch to straddle 1/4 – beat to aerial, a little low, holds onto it – small adjustment on full turn – 1.5 dmt, hop forward. 9.650

Malabuyo – fx – ucla – double pike, secure landing – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full, good extension – hits wolf turn – back 1.5 to front lay, arches, controls. 9.925

King – bb – illinois – bhs loso, low and falls, counting fall now – full turn, check – switch side, 1/4 turn on way down – switch side, tight but secure – hesitation before ro for dismount, 1.5, hop forward. 9.050

McGowan – fx – ucla – ftdt, chest up, little rebound – switch side, slight over turn but very slight, into popa – 1.5 to front 1/1, gets it around securely, got a little low at the end but managed it. 9.875

Knight – bb – illinois – a bit short of position on candle mount – switch to split leap to beat – side aerial to bhs, wobble lean but keeps it on – side somi, little adjustment, holds it – gainer full, stuck with chest forward. 9.775

Moors – fx – ucla – front 2/1 to front tuck, good control – loso side pass – switch to switch 1/2 to wolf full, around – good rudi. 9.900, surprsingly conservative given the everything

Coppola – bb – illinois – side aerial to round off as combo, will get it, flexed feet – switch to split to beat, solid – aerial round off, chest down, wobble – gainer full, some knees, good stick. 9.750

Campbell – fx – ucla – ftdt, chest up, good control – split leap full to popa, around – double tuck, chest down, covers it but a little forward with movement – front lay to front full, little slide. 9.850

Cho – bb – illinois – wolf turn, hit – bhs loso, smooth and secure – switch tro switch 1/2 to beat, solid – hits side aerial – 1.5, stuck. good finish. 9.925

Chiles – fx – ucla – dlo, good control, chest just a little forward – split leap full to wolf full, solid leap option for her, clearly around – front tuck to double tuck, solid. 9.950

FINAL: UCLA 197.200, Illinois 194.700

Illinois was on a solid 196 track at the beginning there, but it went to pieces in the second half. UCLA’s beam stunted the total in their home debut, but a 197.200 is still usable based on how things have gone this week.

  1. Such a bizarre mistake for Rosen today on beam. Looks like she has been working through things mentally this season. Hopefully she can pull it together.
