It’s all-around day at the US women’s world selection camp, where the 8 gymnasts still in contention will compete to see who has to gets to go to the world championship this year.
The field is now down to a measly 8 people after Hezly Rivera and Claire Pease withdrew over the weekend, both suffering from a chronic case of WOGA. Tiana Sumanasekera previously withdrew with wanting to be at college.
The 8 left are Jayla Hang, Simone Rose, Dulcy Caylor, Joscelyn Roberson, Skye Blakely, Leanne Wong, Gabrielle Hardie, and Ashlee Sullivan. At the end of competition tomorrow, 4 will make the team, 2 will be alternates, and 2 will be…arrested? I’m not sure what happens when you don’t make a team.
For today, the main thing is that the winner of the AA will automatically make the Jakarta squad. And right now, that’s feeling…pretty up in the air. Wong is the only one with a 56 this year. Roberson and Hang have 55s, Sullivan and Rose have 54s, and Caylor and Hardie have 53s.

No, the stream has not started yet for anyone, if you’re trying to follow along. Mr. Bregman is there in person and tweeting if you need it. Which you do.
We’re up now for rotation 2 here. I’m starting a little behind and will catch up.
Roberson – BB – back tuck full, secure – switch to switch 1/2 to back tuck, under on switch 1/2, small lean – side aerial loso loso is hit – onodi to straddle – bhs bhs double pike, stuck. Good one.
Caylor – UB – toe full to Maloney to tkatchev, solid – Pak, legs together – van leeuwen, small leg break – blind to jaeger, nice foot position – cast 1/2, late turn – DLO, pikes it down, step forward
Rose – UB – yezhova, leg separation – Malonewy to clear hip full, past – tkatchev, peels off and falls
Blakely – BB – wolf triple, good – back tuck full, check – fhs front tuck, little step back – switch to switch 1/2 – a little tight on switch – aerial, large wobble, bend at the hips – split to wolf jump – side aerial, huge break and falls – double tuck, lunge back. Eesh. Not a great day for Blakely.
Hang – UB – weiler 1/2, little arch – into ricna – toe full to pak, hit – toe on to maloney to tkatchev, muscles but through it – DLO, step back . Through it.
Wong – BB – switch mount, good – side aerial, comfortable – switch, little pause before switch 1/2 to straddle, a litlte slow in combo but hit – switch ring, larger wobble with arm wave – bhs loso, another wobble, lean to the side – wolf double – aerial, wobble – breaks connection into split jump – side somi – gainer tuck full little hop back. Through it but some errors and important broken connections.
Hardie – BB – switch mount, hit – side aerial, wobble – bhs loso loso very nice – front aerial to split to bhs, under on split position – wolf triple, hit – switch to sissone, tight on her dance element positions on beam – 2/1, dmt, step to the side. Pretty solid one.
Sullivan – BB – fwd roll mount – wolf double, hit – Arabian, check, covers what could have been a bigger wobble – bhs loso, secure – aerial, soe knee, into straddle and split – incurring a lot for foot and bent knee, but staying secure – onodi, small check – switch – bhs bhs double pike, step back. Sullivan is like IT’S MINNNEEEEE so far.
Rotation 3
Wong – FX – wolf triple – double double, hit, shuffle back with both feet – whip 1/2 to front full – switch ring and switch 1/2, OK – double pike, hop back – Popa. Solid enough.
Rose BB – switch mount to switch, connected – wolf triple, pulls it around in the end, amusingly slow on the final 1/2 turn – bhs loso loso, hit, little slide back with front foot – side aerial to split jump, little pause before straddle – aerial – 2.5, hop to the side
In rotation 2, Sullivan went 13.250 BB, Hang 13.900 UB, Rose 12.550 UB, Hardie 13.550 BB, Blakely 12.300 BB, Wong 13.100 BB, Caylor 13.850 UB, Roberson 13.600 BB.
Caylor is winning AA after 2. DO ITTTTT.
Hang – BB – hits candle – wolf double, around little waver – side aerial, wobble before split straddle loso – bhs tuck full is hit, bounce back – switch to switch side, hit – double pike, nice and high, step back. Solid.
Hardie – FX – wolf triple and more – back 2.5 to front full, lands entirely OOB – front lay to front 2/1, nice control on landing – switch ring to a botched leap, intended tour jete but ended up doing a hop nothing – double tuck, bounce back
Caylor – BB – switch mount, good – bhs loso loso, secure, knee throughout – L turn with a wobble – side aerial, check – switch to straddle, nice – aerial to split to korbut, gets the connection – wolf double, solid – bhs bhs double pike, deep but lands with lunge back. A hit!
Sullivan – FX – switch full ish – double double tuck, bounce back OOB – switch – tour jete 1/2 to popa is hit – DLO, legs apart, but very solid landing – wolf double, around – front full to double tuck, gets it, step back
Roberson – FX – Moors, hit but short, lunge forward, chest down – DLO 1/1, nice and open but steps back OOB – switch – tour jete 1/1, looked around enough – front full through to double tuck, bounce back and a shuffle – wolf 3.275, so around for credit – double pike, a little short, hop. A hit, but those landings will get her.
The music they’re playing in this gym is an ear crime.
Rotation 4
Hang – FX – wolf double, around – FTDT, large bounce back – whip full to double pike, hit, small hop forward, chest forward – switch 1/2 – tour jete 1/2, good – front through to double tuck, bounce back – popa. Hit 4/4.
Hardie hit a y1.5
Rotation 3: Sullivan FX 13,400, Hang BB 13.200, Rose BB 13.200, Hardie FX 12.250, Wong FX 13.250, Caylor BB 13.400, Roberson FX 13.750. Caylor still leads AA.
Caylor – FX – double Y turn – DLO, just gets it around, chest down – whip full to double tuck punch front is hit, her best so far, hop forward – wolf triple, around with some arms – double pike, chest down, hop forward – switch ring – tour jete 1/2. Well look at you, Dulcy.
Sullivan hit a DTY while that was happening, good height, lots of knee crossing.
Sullivan 2nd vault – handspring lay 1/2, shows layout shape, bigger lunge back
Roberson – VT 1 – hits a Cheng, fair amount of leg crossing, bounce back, but a big hit with that D score.
Rose – FX – whip double tuck front tuck is hit – back 2.5 to front tuck 1/2, little hop – just pulls around a wolf triple again – switch and tour jete 1/2 – double pike, chest down but gets it, hop
Roberson VT 2 – ooooof, overcooks her DTY and falls, but are we really holding that against her with this pudding landing surface? And why are we deciding things based on these vault scores with these landings?
Wong – VT 1 – Very strong stick on her Cheng, like nationals day 2 – lots of knees but good landing.
Wong – VT 2 – also crashes her DTY, short hands down.
And now the most important part of the competition, waiting for USAG to post the final rotation scores.
I would assume Roberson moved ahead with that Cheng.
Nope, USAG says Dulcy Caylor held on to the AA win and automatically made the worlds team with a 55.250. I am living for this. Who would have thought. But the AA was wide open and she stayed on.
Also that’s more than a point better than her career-high AA score previous to this.
So now what do we do? Wong and Roberson still have the vault case for me because they showed hit Chengs and we know they can hit DTYs. I feel like Hang needed to win the AA today because she doesn’t necessarily have a specific event case, and Rose and Hardie fell out of it today.
Ooh they really got Roberson on the Cheng for an 8.550 E score. Meanwhile Leanne got 14.950 and a 9.350 E. We’re having fun.
FINAL:
1) Caylor – 55.250
2) Wong – 55.050
3) Roberson – 54.900
4) Sullivan – 54.250
5) Hang – 54.100
6) Rose – 51.900
We don’t have a vault score for Hardie, but her AA won’t be high, and Blakely did the two events.
Really wanted Blakely to hit beam to force them into not just taking the damn top 4 AA (what events would they even be going for?). We’ll see about tomorrow.
