National Team Rankings – May 2018

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated on the first of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from November 2017–April 2018.

Leaving the rankings this month were South Korea, Greece, Ireland, Slovenia, Croatia, Taiwan, Latvia, and Denmark, temporarily without three scores on each event in the last six months to put together a full team. Rejoining the rankings this month were Romania, Malaysia, India, and Sri Lanka.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

November 2017

1. (1) RUSSIA – 172.448
Viktoria Komova 14.400 14.533 13.366 13.666
Angelina Melnikova 14.633 14.666 14.033 14.500
Varvara Zubova 13.167 12.700 14.250 13.600
Angelina Simakova 15.050 14.100 13.300 13.833
Maria Kharenkova 0.000 0.000 14.250 14.200
172.448 44.083 43.299 42.533 42.533
The Russian Championship provided enough goodies on beam and floor to allow Russia to retain the #1 ranking this month, using those floor 14s to stay ahead of the United States. Komova joins the group of five this month to provide vault and bars scores, just getting in rather than Mustafina because of a higher number for her DTY. Those scores for Kharenkova and Zubova are from late 2017, so they will see them drop off, and see their spots taken over by Mustafina and Shchekoldina, unless they can recreate those 14s in coming weeks.
2. (2) UNITED STATES – 171.734
Ragan Smith 13.800 14.567 14.200 12.933
Morgan Hurd 14.650 14.600 13.800 14.033
Grace McCallum 14.667 13.600 14.000 13.633
Gabby Perea 13.150 14.450 13.050 11.700
Emma Malabuyo 14.467 13.267 14.300 14.167

171.734

43.784 43.617 42.500 41.833
Scores from the world championship expired this month (because what have you done for me lately), but the US was able to use solid numbers from Jesolo and the April verification camp to gain a little ground on Russia. The US is still looking for full strength vault and floor scores from Smith to get the team total back up, but the all-around strength of the Smith/Hurd/Malabuyo group does allow for bringing in someone like Perea for just a bars score to make up the best-scoring team. It’s a familiar scenario for the US and something to keep in mind heading toward the fall. Of course, this is all just a placeholder as Simone is expected to blow things up in just a couple months.
3. (3) JAPAN – 171.564
Asuka Teramoto 14.533 13.866 14.200 13.566
Mai Murakami 14.950 13.866 13.800 14.766
Kiko Kuwajima 14.350 12.750 14.500 12.300
Sae Miyakawa 15.000 12.033 11.533 14.000
Hitomi Hatakeda 14.650 14.400 13.800 13.400
171.564 44.600 42.132 42.500 42.332
Japan typically excels on vault and floor in domestic competitions, and this month’s All-Japan Championship was no exception as Murakami and Miyakawa used big floor scores to lift Japan’s total right back up into contention with the US and Russia. Hatakeda looks like she is establishing a solid place for herself this year as “possible qualification all-arounder who can also provide a TF bars score,” but Kuwajima is currently on the best-scoring team because of that big beam number from the WOGA Classic, in a spot that probably still belongs to Aiko Sugihara when it all comes down to it.
4. (4) CANADA – 169.903
Brooklyn Moors 14.000 12.534 13.767 14.600
Shallon Olsen 14.900 12.700 13.200 13.667
Brittany Rogers 14.550 14.200 12.250 0.000
Ana Padurariu 13.500 14.267 14.234 13.734
Ellie Black 14.400 13.934 13.650 13.450
169.903 43.666 42.334 41.901 42.001
Canada has competed quite prolifically in the early part of 2018, with the latest boost coming from a Commonwealth Games performance in which Brittany Rogers showed that she still has the bars and vault scores to be a cog in the highest-scoring group of five. This could be another year of spicy team selection with Onyshko and Rose Woo also making up somewhat equivalently scoring teams.
5. (5) FRANCE – 168.715
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.550 14.650 13.933 13.550
Lorette Charpy 13.800 14.350 14.000 13.200
Marine Boyer 14.000 13.100 14.200 13.650
Juliette Bossu 13.550 14.166 13.150 13.400
Coline Devillard 14.266 0.000 0.000 0.000
168.715 42.816 43.166 42.133 40.600
6. (6) GREAT BRITAIN – 167.400
Amy Tinkler 14.700 13.700 13.200 13.850
Taeja James 13.900 13.000 12.750 14.100
Lucy Stanhope 14.700 12.100 13.050 12.700
Georgia-Mae Fenton 14.050 14.600 13.800 12.500
Alice Kinsella 14.300 13.600 13.700 13.150
167.400 43.700 41.900 40.700 41.100
It’s the Taeja James 14.100 on floor from the first day at Commonwealth Games that keeps GB steady this month as some of the valuable Fragapane scores from the fall of 2017 drop off the rankings.
7. (9) GERMANY – 166.633
Kim Bui 13.850 14.500 12.750 12.800
Tabea Alt 14.100 13.750 13.650 12.800
Pauline Schaefer 13.700 13.000 14.000 13.500
Sarah Voss 14.600 13.333 13.750 13.033
Elisabeth Seitz 13.600 14.900 12.000 13.000
166.633 42.550 43.150 41.400 39.533
Kim Bui’s return to the all-around at the Bundesliga boosted Germany’s scores a bit this month, returning the team to a more representative TF-level ranking. Germany is still looking for that third strong number on most events, but at this point there’s not an obvious heir waiting to come in and disrupt this group until Scheder comes back and restores the big five from Rio.
8. (8) UKRAINE – 166.325
Diana Varinska 13.800 14.650 13.700 12.966
Anastasiya Belyaeva 13.775 10.100 10.650 13.550
Valeria Osipova 13.900 13.800 14.150 14.150
Angelina Radivilova 0.000 13.300 10.800 12.700
Valeria Iarmolenko 13.300 11.700 13.800 13.750
166.325 41.475 41.750 41.650 41.450
Domestic Ukraine scores. Don’t worry about it. Ukrainian national championship scores come off the rankings next month, and it’s not going to be pretty.
9. (7) CHINA – 166.262
Chen Yile 0.000 14.233 14.466 0.000
Lyu Jiaqi 0.000 14.866 12.933 0.000
Zhang Jin 14.233 12.466 13.533 13.266
Wang Cenyu 13.000 14.450 14.166 12.450
Liu Jinru 14.333 11.933 0.000 13.266
166.262 41.566 43.549 42.165 39.982
This position is temporary for China and will be resolved once China holds its May national championship, but it does reveal the current dilemma China faces. There is little overlap between the bars/beam gymnasts and the vault/floor gymnasts, making it quite difficult to smash three TF scores on each event into a team of five when so many of the bars/beam gymnasts either don’t do vault/floor or haven’t competed them in a while. China will be very reliant on Chen Yile (and Li Qi when healthy) to be worlds-level on all four pieces.
10. (10) BELGIUM – 163.616
Axelle Klinckaert 14.000 12.100 12.500 13.333
Nina Derwael 13.550 15.300 13.500 13.000
Maellyse Brassart 14.100 12.800 10.025 11.900
Rune Hermans 0.000 13.833 13.200 13.500
Senna Deriks 13.900 13.450 10.800 12.650
163.616 42.000 42.583 39.200 39.833
11. (11) ITALY – 163.049
Giada Grisetti 13.650 14.000 12.450 12.250
Desiree Carofiglio 14.367 13.650 11.650 13.433
Elisa Meneghini 13.750 13.000 12.900 13.466
Maria Cocciolo 13.133 11.750 13.850 11.900
Lara Mori 13.650 13.033 13.200 13.750
163.049 41.767 40.683 39.950 40.649
12. (12) BRAZIL – 161.800
Lorrane Oliveira 13.400 13.267 12.233 12.233
Flavia Saraiva 14.467 12.633 12.633 13.900
Maria Franca 0.000 0.000 13.267 12.325
Jade Barbosa 14.333 13.533 13.233 13.000
Carolyne Pedro 13.900 13.067 11.867 13.200
161.800 42.700 39.867 39.133 40.100
Brazil improved its team total fairly dramatically with the scores from Saraiva and Barbosa at Jesolo but would also need to get Andrade, Fidelis, and Brito back into the mix to get scores worthy of the top 8. That’s where Brazil would be at full strength.
13. (18) AUSTRALIA – 161.707
Emily Whitehead 14.166 13.150 12.500 12.150
Alexandra Eade 0.000 0.000 11.566 13.500
Talia Folino 13.700 11.725 13.175 12.000
Georgia Godwin 13.800 13.800 13.150 13.100
Georgia-Rose Brown 13.600 14.000 13.066 13.100
161.707 41.666 40.950 39.391 39.700
Australia’s recent performances, particularly those of Georgia Godwin and Georgia-Rose Brown at the Commonwealth Games, have restored Australia to a ranking that much better reflects the actual strength of the current national team.
14. (13) NETHERLANDS – 158.898
Lieke Wevers 0.000 0.000 13.300 0.000
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.933 14.100 0.000
Tisha Volleman 14.166 12.500 12.500 12.700
Elisabeth Geurts 14.100 12.450 12.533 12.300
Vera van Pol 13.500 13.366 12.133 12.400
158.898 41.766 39.799 39.933 37.400
Thorsdottir has not competed in the last six months, reinforcing how reliant the Netherlands is on her scores. There is little depth past the main, famous few—especially without Lieke competing the all-around. Things get 12y pretty quickly without Eythora.
15. (15) SWITZERLAND – 156.473
Ilaria Kaeslin 13.150 11.800 12.850 12.650
Giulia Steingruber 14.675 13.300 12.900 13.433

Sara Peter 13.850 12.050 12.300 12.200

156.309 41.517 37.717 38.383 38.692
18. (14) SPAIN – 155.866
Laura Bechdeju 13.500 12.750 12.250 12.600
Nora Fernandez 13.550 13.466 11.050 12.450
Lluna Casanova 12.750 11.700 12.850 12.050
Paula Raya 13.400 13.350 11.250 11.500
Cintia Rodriguez 13.100 12.800 13.600 12.050
155.866 40.450 39.616 38.700 37.100
It has now been over six months since Ana Perez last competed, pretty much entirely accounting for Spain’s drop in the rankings. Her scores are exceptionally important to any potential team success Spain might have.
19. (19) COLOMBIA – 155.400
Melba Avendano 13.000 13.150 10.950 13.000
Dayana Ardila 13.875 11.600 11.650 12.850
Ginna Escobar 13.500 12.750 12.550 13.150
Valentina Pardo 13.325 12.250 11.450 12.300

20. (NR) ROMANIA – 154.499
Denisa Golgota 14.467 12.300 12.467 12.767
Carmen Ghiciuc 13.400 12.500 12.133 11.767

Nica Ivanus 13.633 10.500 12.800 12.900
154.499 41.500 37.066 37.400 38.533
Romania sent a group to Jesolo, restoring enough scores to muster a team total. Unfortunately for Romania, 20th place is a pretty representative ranking of where the team is right now without Iordache.
21. (20) ICELAND – 153.249
Dominiqua Belanyi 13.250 11.900 12.350 12.150
Agnes Suto-Tuuha 13.400 11.600 12.700 12.800
Tinna Teitsdottir 13.550 10.000 10.700 12.433

153.249 40.200 36.350 38.400 38.299
The Icelandic Championship from April allowed Iceland a chance to boost its total by a few tenths and get some juicy domestic scores. Domestic scores typically make Iceland look competitive for that all-important top-24 placement, but that doesn’t typically translate at major FIG events.
22. (21) CZECH REPUBLIC – 152.841
Dominika Ponizilova 14.000 12.300 11.750 12.200

Successful scores from April’s internal competition have lifted Puerto Rico nearly 10 spots in the rankings to become one of the biggest movers of the last month.

One thought on “National Team Rankings – May 2018”

  1. Echoing Spencer’s comments on Canada, Canadian Nationals this month could be very exciting if everyone is healthy enough to compete but that’s the big question mark. Padurariu’s original prognosis was that she was expected to be recovered in time for Nationals but not sure if that’s the case? I’d rather she take it slow and not risk anything. And not sure of the status of Brooklyn Moors or Rose Woo after their recent withdrawals from Pac Rims and Stuttgart/Commonwealth Games?
