When Last We Met
Alabama’s final ranking was in the (gasp) double digits last year, so while we can talk about a new coach settling in, a strong finish at regionals that stoked optimism, and highlight moments, it still ranks as the second-worst season in Alabama’s entire NCAA history.
That’s going to need to be the starting baseline, rather than the new normal. The goal must be a return to nationals in 2024.
Roster Transitions
OUT | IN |
Zoe Gravier | Chloe LaCoursiere |
Lauren Little | Gabby Ladanyi |
Sania Mitchell VT, FX | Natalia Pawlak |
Shallon Olsen VT, BB, FX | Jamison Sears |
Alabama will be very optimistic about the roster changes for the 2024 season, which should ultimately lead to a major gain in realistic lineup options and top-level scores. The only regionals routine lost from last season is the DTY from Shallon Olsen, and Alabama has brought in multiple new gymnasts who should make multiple lineups, if not the all-around.
Chloe LaCoursiere is among the most heralded L10 newcomers in college gymnastics this year, thanks largely to an unprecedented level of domination on bars over the last couple years, finishing out her career with six straight scores of 9.950 or higher. Alabama will count on her being A Thing on bars, also probably floor, hopefully beam if the consistency is there, and maybe vault if needed.
Gabby Ladanyi has probably been on the radar longer than any other college gymnastics newbie this season—at least if you spent time on YouTube 10 years ago looking for video of Kytra Hunter’s 10 and found that Robert had also uploaded videos of his daughter just dominating some L7 weenies. Slightly more recently, Ladanyi was 4th AA at L10 Nationals in 2022, 7th on beam in 2023, and should provide a lineup option on all four events.
Natalia Pawlak is a sophomore transfer from Pittsburgh who led the team last year on bars, finishing with an NQS of 9.880. That should put her in solid contention for a spot in an, albeit pretty deep, Alabama bars lineup.
Jamison Sears proved the only person who could defeat LaCoursiere in their session of L10 Nationals this year, breaking 9.9 on both vault and bars en route to an all-around title. Sears has the ability to pair excellent power and difficulty on vault and floor (Y1.5, DLO) with elegant, extended work on bars in a way that has everyone very excited. Alabama will hope she provides big scores on at least three events, and then also maybe beam as a bonus.
Gymnast to Watch
Makarri Doggette (5Y)
The difference between good Alabama lineups and the best possible Alabama lineups will hinge on Doggette in 2024.
Doggette has been a consistent bars star for Alabama—now ranking as the second 10-iest bars worker in school history—and she’ll bring that to the lineup again in 2024. If she’s doing only bars on the regular, Alabama will certainly take it, but the ideal lineups, the we-have-a-chance-to-beat-Florida-and-LSU lineups, would feature a Makarri Doggette who is able to compete floor, able to land that Y1.5 consistently, and is going 9.9+ on three events.

Luisa Blanco Gabby Gladieux Lilly Hudson Jamison Sears | Makarri Doggette Jordyn Paradise Chloe LaCoursiere Gabby Ladanyi Shania Adams |
Alabama’s path to the all-10.0-starts goal would seem pretty straightforward in 2024. They can add the very lineup-ready Y1.5 from Jamison Sears in place of Shallon Olsen and keep everything else the same, with Blanco, Gladieux, Hudson, Doggette, and Paradise all doing their 1.5s as well.
Done and done, right? Maybe, but in last year’s regional final, the team’s one weak event was vault, where the landings were not good enough to score like a lineup of entirely 10.0 starts should. Alabama ended up dropping a tenth on vault to an Ohio State squad that had just one 10.0 start, not six. So, the balance is needed. A theoretical winning Alabama vault lineup will have all those Y1.5s, but it’s only a winning lineup if the landings are there.
Bars
2023 Event Ranking: 12

Makarri Doggette Chloe LaCoursiere Jamison Sears Luisa Blanco | Cam Machado Lilly Hudson Natalia Pawlak Shania Adams Mati Waligora Gabby Ladanyi Jordyn Paradise Karis German |
Bars was Alabama’s lowest-ranked event in 2023 but is the one that should receive the biggest upgrade in 2024 with the addition of the sets from LaCoursiere and Sears. Both should be major factors at the end of this lineup, which will allow Alabama to be quite a bit choosier since every gymnast who competed a bars routine last season also returns for this go-round.
Doggette and Blanco will certainly be back as both have made a habit of recording almost entirely 9.9s. Cam Machado has also been a regular in the lineup for good scores and is the safest bet among all the other options, which would then mean the likes of Mati Waligora and Lilly Hudson—who both competed bars every meet in 2023—would fight it out for the last lineup spot with people like Natalia Pawlak and Gabby Ladanyi and most ideally Shania Adams, who should have the form edge if everything is going right but hasn’t been a lineup regular lately.
Beam
2023 Event Ranking: 8
Lineup Locks | Lineup Options |
Luisa Blanco Ella Burgess Lilly Hudson | Gabby Gladieux Chloe LaCoursiere Mati Waligora Jamison Sears Shania Adams Lillian Lewis Rachel Rybicki Makarri Doggette |
Alabama’s beam lineup is 50% sure-thing and 50% who-or-what. Obviously, Luisa Blanco and Lilly Hudson will return as the big scores at the end of the lineup, and Ella Burgess has a lock on that leadoff spot. Beyond that, let’s all find out together.
Gladieux seems the next-most-likely to get into this 2024 lineup since she carved out a side 9.875 place for herself in the lineup last year. Shania Adams, meanwhile, was a useful re-introduction to the lineup at the very end of last season when she took over the Rachel Rybicki/Mati Waligora spot. Waligora may end up in a similar position as on bars where she could very easily go or very easily get pushed out, and I’m still holding out some hope for Lillian Lewis, even though we saw her only twice for 9.7s last year.
As for both Sears and LaCoursiere, beam was typically the low score of their repertoire in L10, with good gymnastics and also a whole lot of tentativeness. The best-executed Alabama lineup—and the one that can begin to think about upgrading on last year’s scores—features both of them. As long as they’ve got weekly beam hits as college gymnasts.

Floor was Alabama’s best-ranked event in 2023 but should not be immune from the upgrade project by any means. Too often last season, there was mixing and matching of 9.7s and lower 9.8s at the beginning of the lineup, and this year’s roster depth should mean that doesn’t need to happen anymore.
As on beam, Luisa Blanco and Lilly Hudson delivered Alabama’s best scores in 2023 and will be up there doing the same in 2024. Gladieux also seemed to have solidified her back-half lineup spot in 2023, though may get pushed lower down the list in 2024 since Sears should be a no-brainer for this lineup, and LaCoursiere also performed a typically well-scoring twist-a-thon in L10 with Lilly Hudson composition.
In the department of being too good at floor not to be in the lineup (but also will they?), we have Makarri Doggette and Karis German. If you’re looking for what factor could put Alabama back into top-5 contention this season, floor routines that can scrape the rafters rather than twist into the ground is a good start. I’m hesitant to anticipate anything from Karis German because we saw so little of her last year, and nothing on floor, but she had so much to give on floor in elite that it would seem crazy for her not to be a late-lineup floor star in college.
Otherwise, even though it went a little under-the-radar, Shania Adams scored 9.9+ six times last season for what proved to be a critical routine, and Gabby Ladanyi’s floor always seemed like it should have scored better than it did in L10 given her strong full-in.
Paradise is injured, no idea what or how bad. LaCoursiere has a magnificent Y1.5, easily the best one on the team.
Also, Sears and LaCoursiere will absolutely make the beam lineup. Tremendous sets for both of them, 9.95+ material. Sears has a standing front tuck, LaCoursiere does cat leap + front aerial + korbut, original choreography too. Ladanyi also has a very, very good beam. Smooth movement, strong dance elements and good acro.
