When Last We Met

Kentucky’s 2023 season easily ranks as the team’s best ever, marking just the second time Kentucky has reached nationals—achieved by upending #8 Alabama in the regional final—and marking the first time Kentucky has made nationals under the much more challenging 8-qualifier system.

A performance without a counting fall in the national semifinal saw Kentucky defeat other teams at a national championship for the first time en route to the historic 6th-place finish. So it went well.

For Kentucky, we’re seeing a lot of changes in terms of…maybe who’s in the preseason team photo, but not too much to grapple with in terms of losing gymnasts who were in final lineups. With a number of top L10 all-arounders entering this season, Kentucky will have an eye on improving the competition for spots in every lineup in 2024.

Creslyn Brose enjoyed a huge burst in results in the 2023 L10 season, finishing 3rd AA in Senior E at Nationals (up from 19th in her division the year before). She seems to be peaking into her college career and should provide multiple routine options for Kentucky, with floor typically her top-scoring event.

Cadence Gormley‘s best results in L10 came on bars, where she took 3rd in Senior E at nationals this season, though it may end up being floor where she provides the most compelling new option. She also has the leaps to deliver a high-quality beam, so Kentucky will certainly want to get her into a couple lineups.

Kaila Lawrence is a walk-on whose best result came at 2022 North Carolina states, where she placed first on bars with a 9.675.

Sharon Lee placed 12th AA at this year’s L10 nationals in the same session as Brose and Gormley. Her standout event is usually bars, where she has the extension to be an option.

Cecily Rizo joins the club in also having recorded her best L10 results on bars, where she took 2nd at this year’s Region 3s.

Delaynee Rodriguez capped her prolific L10 career in May with a 2nd AA finish in Senior D, featuring victories on both beam and floor, lineups that Kentucky will want to bring her into in 2024.

Gymnast to Watch

Jillian Procasky (JR)

Kentucky has the big-name senior and 5th-year (and 6th-year) stars returning—as well as a quality first-year class—but we also saw at the end of the 2023 season how essential Procasky was to the team with her all-around performance.

When she scored 39.525 AA in the regional final, with a career-high 9.925 on bars, it demonstrated the potential transition from being an early-lineup, 6th-person-on-the-event performer—whose score can be used or dropped or whatever—to someone who is delivering must-count numbers.

Kentucky should be pretty set for stars on vault with the gymnasts who return this season. Raena Worley’s Y1.5 will lead the way again, and Team Handspring 1.5 will once again act as her royal court, with Patterson, Magnelli, and Wilson all scoring very well last season.

The project here will be finding the best two remaining vaulters to fill out the lineup. Most ideally, you’d have Bridget Bourque’s Y1.5 in there, but her end-of-season injury in 2023 may mean that’s not a sure thing, at least right away. Procasky has been an every-week vaulter in her first two years with what is typically a very clean Yfull, so I’d imagine she’ll return to the lineup, though most of the first years also bring Yfulls that appear to be viable as needed, which would keep Kentucky on track on vault.

Bars presents the biggest task for Kentucky in 2024 because this lineup was at least fairly reliant on Shealyn Luksik and Kaitlin DeGuzman last season and will need to find a way to replace those scores. Worley, Davis, Bunn reign as the top returning scorers and should be back, while Procasky rejoined the lineup halfway through last season for scores that should have a place again.

Most, if not all, of the first years will be in the mix as part of the replacement project, so Kentucky shouldn’t need to anticipate a loss of scores here. Really, bars was the best event in L10 for a solid 4-5 of them. Cadence Gormley will probably be the front-runner thanks to her high Pak and legs-together position on everything, but Creslyn Brose and Delaynee Rodriguez should have the DLOs to get in there, and Cecily Rizo and Sharon Lee will be fighting for spots as well. You wouldn’t be shocked to see any of them make their way into the lineup here.

It’s somewhat surprising that beam ranked as Kentucky’s weak event last season since there are so many 9.9-level beamers on this team, but…thems the beams, I guess. Still, there doesn’t seem to be need for too much change on beam this season.

Magnelli and Worley are exceptional and should lead the lineup again, and Patterson completed her evolution into a beamer last season with six 9.9s+ for an every-week lineup routine. Bunn returned from injury to be essential on beam again last season, really finding her best routines right at the end of the season, a trend Kentucky will hope continues into 2024 since her beam capability is right up with anyone on the team.

With Procasky delivering a weekly beam last season, Kentucky is already up to five solid lineup members before getting into the first-year fight, with Delaynee Rodriguez as the standout from L10 and Gormley showing a ton of potential.

It’s worth keeping a monocled eye on what happens with Kentucky’s floor lineups this season because everyone is back from nationals last year—you could keep everything the same if you wanted—but Kentucky will nonetheless be eager to improve on that 11th-place ranking. The team has the new gymnasts to push people out of the lineup and shouldn’t rest on what worked last time around.

At least not all of it. They should absolutely rest on Raena Worley. Davis and Patterson will also return to the lineup, most likely with Magnelli, but we’ll also see very compelling lineup routines from Gormley and Rodriguez that could certainly break their way in and create some competition with Procasky and Wilson, who were regulars in the lineup last season. Who emerges as the 9.9iest? Bunn was also a strong floor worker for 9.9s before her injury, so if she’s able to come back there this season, that would make it even tougher to get into this lineup.
