Cal has enough of a lead over LSU in 3rd place that it would take just a 197.1 to stay in 2nd this week, but of course Cal will want much more than that. Arizona is unlikely to move up from 17th today but can stay ahead of Oregon State in 18th with a 196.350.

Mya Lauzon is not in any of the Cal lineups today. Not great, Bob. She is, thankfully, not limited in her ability to dance next to vault today. Evan tells us that she’s just resting.

Feel like Cal is intentionally throwing some shade at the college judging with this one.

Rotation 1

Brown – VT – Cal – yfull, bounce back, pikes to try to limit the bounce, good open in the air. 9.800

Mueller – UB – Arizona – toe on with some leg position – tkatchev, good amplitude – overshoot, pike shape in that one – some leg separation in DLO, bounce. 9.725

Williams – VT – Cal – yfull, good distance and open shape, a bit smaller on the bounce than Brown. 9.825

Hargrove – UB – Arizona – clear hip some elbows, hit tkatchev – short hs – nice bail vertical position and legs together – FTDT, some leg separation, good stick. 9.825

Cesario – VT – Cal – yfull, best height of the bunch, another with the bounce back. 9.850

McCabe – UB – Arizona – shortish first hs – blind to piked jaeger, hit – bail, piked shape, hip angle on catch – finishes DLO, some leg separation, hop back. 9.800

Mayhew – VT – Cal – y1.5, a little short with a step back, some knees. 9.850

Deets – UB – Arizona – giant 1/2, past – tkatchev, hit – bail, solid vertical – rushing through cast hs position – lovely amplitude on DLO, small bounce back

Frazier – VT – Cal – DTY, good distance, step back, some knees throughout. 9.825. Fair, but we see weaker DTYs go 9.900

Derr – UB – Arizona – godo first hs – toe on to Ray, a little close on catch with some form – pak – solid 1/2 turn position on low – FTDT, step back. 9.875

Silvers – VT – Cal – Y1.5, nearly found the stick, small slide back and some knees. Good. 9.825

Fears – UB – Arizona – nice first hs – tkatchev, good amplitude – hits hs on high – clear hip to bail, pretty – DLO, some leg separation, finds the DLO stick. Good one. 9.950

49.175 for Cal on vault, season low, lots of steps and bounces on landing, not as much difficulty forgiveness in scoring those last couple as we see at other meets. Arizona with a big 49.250 to take the lead after one.

Rotation 2

Did we lose the stream? Because the second rotation has def started.

SHUT IT DOWN. SHUT IT DOWN.

We’re back, Cal went 49.375 on bars, Arizona 49.225 on vault for Cal to take the 98.550-98.475 lead after two rotations. On track to be a drop for Cal but a good counter for Arizona.

Rotation 3

Li – BB – Cal – aerial to back loso, keeps the connection going – full turn, small hesitation – switch to split to beat, hit, arms around the connection a little again – gainer tuck full, stuck. 9.875

Deets – FX – Arizona – split ring jump full to start – front lay to front full, under control, lower amplitude – split leap full to popa, around – double tuck, good height, controls step. 9.825

Williams – BB – Cal – wolf single, little arm finesse – aerial, lean correction at the hips – bhs loso, quick arms down to avoid check – switch to split, good – bhs gainer full, arm wave to hold the landing, some pike. Didn’t connect out of the aerial today.

I believe I saw a split of 9.850/9.600 for that routine. Love this sport. No notes. Imagine the 9.850 will come down.

Fears – FX – Arizona – double tuck, bounce back, looks like the just barely kept it in bounds – solid leap combo – rudi, good control – back 1.5 to front full, little slide, good. 9.750

9.625 for Williams.

Cesario – BB – Cal – full turn – bhs loso, large break, leg up wobble and a lean to the side – switch, little pause before switch 1/2, good height, check – high 1.5 dismount, good stick. 9.700

Strom – FX – Arizona – punch rudi to loso – switch to switch ring 1/2, lower front leg on that ring 1/2 – back 1.5 to front full, controls the step forward, some knees. 9.875

Frazier – BB – Cal – full turn – aerial to back loso series, keeps moving, little lean to hold it – split jump the stream cutting out just as Evan was saying “This is a real highlight for me” about her split ring jump is a real summation of what we’ve had here. Stuck dismount. 9.950.

Derr – FX – Arizona – front lay to front 1/1, crossover steppy – switch 1/2 to popa – weird fall, bailed out of her double tuck attempt and did one tuck and landed to her back. 8.500

Perea – BB – Cal – wolf single, hit – kickover, lean before back tuck and then another lean, shouldn’t get acro series credit there – switch, another little pause before split jump beat jump – side somi to back tuck 1.5, hop. We have a 9.450 up now.

Herry – FX – Arizona – double tuck, little bounce – switch 1/2 to popa, around – back 1.5 to front lay, extended well, not the highest – double pike, hit. 9.850

Aderinto – BB – Cal – sissone, hit – bhs loso loso, secure work – full turn – beat to stag ring attempt, low of position – gainer full, stuck. Big routine to come through. 9.775 with a 9.700/9.850 split.

Mueller – FX – Arizona – double pike, hit – switch side to popa – back 1.5 to front lay, solid control – double tuck, chest down, controls it. 9.900

Cal is in full “pretend this meet never happened” mode with 48.925 on beam, so this will be a drop, and it will take quite a floor score now to stay ahead of LSU for 2nd in the rankings, now needing 49.625 on floor. Really good chance for another 197 here for Arizona.

After 3:
Arizona 147.675
Cal 147.475

Rotation 4

Fears – BB – Arizona – bhs loso, check – full turn, hit – side aerial, secure – split jump to stag ring, arm wave correction – 1.5 dismount, holds onto it with a lean. 9.825

Williams – FX – Cal – front lay to rudi, good leg position – and the weirdest wolf turn fall, wolf single to a fetal position knee squat – 1.5 to layout, good layout position. 9.875? Did we…did we…it was an aesthetic choice?

Herry – BB – Arizona – full turn, arm wave – bhs loso, arm wave – side somi, little lean – straddle jump to straddle 1/2, hit – bhs 1.5, stuck. Nice. 9.800

Kane – FX – Cal – front lay to rudi, good control, leg separation on rudi – switch side 1/2 to wolf jump, good – back 1.5 to high front lay, steps into split jump. Good. 9.925.

Mueller – BB – Arizona – side aerial to loso, gets it – full turn, hit – switch to straddle, little shoulder moment after switch – 1.5 dismount, hop forward. 9.850

Cesario – FX – Cal – back 1.5 to front full, dance out – switch to switch ring 1/2 – double tuck, high, little rebound. 9.875

Martin – BB – Arizona – split jump to double stag, a little low – bhs loso, holds it – aerial, small lean correction – 1.5 dismount, hop forward. 9.825

Mayhew – FX – Cal – front 2/1 to front tuck, slide forward – switch ring to switch 1/2 – back 1.5 to front full, under control. And we’re on 9.950. eMjae is like, where’s my 10.

Castles – BB – Arizona – bhs loso, very small correction on landing – switch to split leap, good – aerial to sissone – wolf double is strong – 1.5 dismount, tries a quick arm wave to hold it but ends up basically pushing herself into a step back. 9.800

Li – FX – Cal – double tuck, good feet in the air, sticks it but lean balances in the stick – double y, definitely her best completion on that this year – front full to front lay, solid – switch to switch ring 1/2, could have some more amplitude. 9.900

Deets – BB – Arizona – bhs loso, good height but a significant wobble, arm wave and turn to the side – hitch to switch side – cat leap to kickover, wobble, leg up – switch to gainer full, good stick. 9.825 with a fun 9.900/9.750 split.

Frazier – FX – Cal – DLO, good chest up, controls front foot – switch ring to switch 1/2 to 1/2 sissone, lovely – split ring jump, excellent – front tuck to double tuck, kind of a large lunge but kept that front foot down. 9.950

Big 49.600 for Cal on floor gets them to 197.125 (the beam score also went up after an inquiry on Aderinto’s). Still a drop score, but reached the minimum necessary to stay ahead of LSU for second in the rankings. Another very useful road number for Arizona on 196.850. Very happy counting that.

  1. This is quite possibly not only the worst, but also the weirdest meet coverage I’ve ever witnessed.

  2. What is with the floor scoring for Cal. Christmas was over months ago. Compare that 9.95 for Magee to Brooklyn Moores. Not even in the same realm. Cal was down so the judges decided gifts were warranted. Infuriating

    1. Hahaha yes those were gifts but exactly the kinds of gifts UCLA gets on the regular (did you see the last three routines on FX in your meet last week?) and Cal rarely does.

UCLA is a good team, but not a great team this year; deal.
