It’s the typical final Friday grab bag today, with conference schedules done and major teams competing in a whole variety of places. The biggest single match-up will be Denver’s visit to Michigan, and Denver’s score in particular will be significant for Alabama and Michigan State competing later this weekend to see what they’ll need to do (if anything) to retain spots in the top 8.

We also have the “WE GET 197s NOW” NC State team visiting Florida along with just-on-the-bubble Iowa State and LIU—and overall four of the top five in action tonight with all kinds of famous gymnasts competing in their senior nights. Make sure all bookcases are bolted to the wall. Tie down any loose items.

Rotation 1

Thaxton – VT – Michigan – yfull, medium hop back, chest down ends up with an arm circle after the hop as well. 9.750

Rorich – UB – Denver – hits jaeger, solid foot position – bail, hit – arch on cast hs on high – DLO, little pike in the air, bounce back. 9.850

Mulligan – VT – Michigan – yfull with a small hop back, good amplitude. 9.825

Ulrich – UB – Denver – good first hs – toe on to maloney to pak, closer catch on pak but works through it – gets up to vertical on high bar – DLO, couldn’t see landing. And we have 9.925

Guggino – VT – Michigan – y1.5, sicks it today, just a shift of heels together. 9.950

Hebinck loses form on her pak on bars, tucks it and hit the mat with her feet

Lazzari is up 2nd on vault for Florida, misses her block and sits it down, had no amplitude so no chance to hit a vault. Following a 9.950 for Draser in the first spot. Fun.

Wilson – VT – Michigan – big y1.5, little hop forward. 9.875

Did anyone else’s meet just become baseball? Or am I losing it?

Nguyen vaulting for Florida 3rd up, good distance, hop forward and then a slide salute before holding the finish position. 9.825

Miller for LIU on floor with a step OOB on double pike, triesssss to keep her combo pass in bounds but not sure she did – finishes double pike, bounce back and hands down

Blakely – VT – Florida – y1.5, pretty large bound forward, again good distance. 9.875

Adams with a fall in the 4th spot for Iowa State, though they have three usable scores before that.

Michigan and Denver broadcast is back.

Jordan finishes vault for Michigan with a yfull, off to the side with a lunge to the side, some chest down position. Iwai in for Casali on bars, a hit routine but struggles to land her DLO dismount, chest down, lunge forward. They’ll need to count this because of Hebinck’s 9.425.

Pilgrim 5th on vault for Florida, y1.5, good height, not as much distance as Blakely but a smaller hop forward. 9.900

Harper on bars for NC State – hits clear hip to gienger, just some foot flexing – finishes DLO, holds stick with a lean correction

Iwai gets out of bars with a usable 9.775, so Denver goes 49.425 there to Michigan’s 49.250 on vault.

Ferris – VT – Florida – no Wong in the vault lineup today – y1.5, solid, small hop forward. bit of knees. Expect 9.950 based on today’s scores. Oh, 9.925. Look at you, judges. Taking things and whatnot.

Florida 49.475 on vault.

We see the end of Thomas on beam for Iowa State in a must hit – Switch to staddle 1/4, hit with lean – 1.5 dismount, holds stick. 9.875

Iowa State with a very useful 49.175 on beam to start.

Morris – FX – LIU – little slide back on double back – split leap to split leap full to wolf full, a but under – front lay to front full – double pike, solid landing

Shepard – UB – NC St – jaeger, good feet, pak, same, good extended position – hits hs on high – FTDT, step back

Rotation 2 underway in Michigan.

Vore – UB – Michigan – toe on to tkatchev, hit – solid hs on high – bail, legs together solidly – hits hs on hjigh – DLO, step back and then another bit of movement to control landing. 9.825

Hargraves – VT – Denver, following a 9.825 yfull from brusch – yfull, solid open in the air, but ends up with chest down, bounce back. 9.800

Wilson – UB – Michigan – blind to piked jaeger, hit, not the highest but solid and her usual – bail, doing well to avoid giving away arches on these handstands but it’s close – hits hs on high – DLO, step back. 9.825

Ulrich – VT – Denver – handspring pike 1/2, pretty large bounce back, otherwise solid 9.825

Zabrowski – UB – Michigan – blind to jaeger, some foot flexing, a bit close – pak, hit – borderline cast hs – DLO, step back. 9.775

Everyone for Michigan with a full tenth on landing so far.

Mundell – VT – Denver – solid y1.5, little shuffle forward and some knees. 9.900

Bauman – UB – Michigan – good first hs – toe 1/2 to jaeger, high – hits hs on high – bail, rushes hs position a bit, good legs together – strong final cast hs – blind to double front, very short landing, saves it but has to take multiple lunges. 9.725

Hutchinson – VT – Denver – y1.5, good stick – just the legs in pre-flight, a hair soft in knee position. 9.950

Brooks – UB – Michigan – good first hs – blind to piked jaeger, solid – borderline hs – toe on to bail – hits hs on high – DLO 1/1, small bounce back

No Casali and no 6th vaulter for Denver today. 49.300 from 5 vaults.

Marr – UB – Michigan – hits first hs – toe on to maloney to bail, catches bail at an angle – smooth final hs – DLO, way way short and knees down. So two 9.7s counting for Michigan. 49.100 on bars

After 2:
Denver 98.725
Michigan 98.350

Blakely opens for Florida on bars – hits maloney to pak, solid 1/2 turn on low bar – toe 1/2 to double front, cowboy, good stick. Nice. 9.900

Guggino is doing bars exhibition for Michigan, falls on jaeger. Has to take an extra pump swing for overshoot. Clear hip on high. DLO, lunge forward. Senior nights should have more fun routines like this. Hey, Reyna’s going to do bars. Whatever.

Adler leading off beam for NC State, has an arm wave on side aerial. Hit. 9.775

Nguyen – UB – Florida – hits first hs – maloney to pak, smooth, very small leg breaks – 1/2 turn on low – DLO, small bounce back. 9.900

Jennings on beam for NC State, hits bhs bhs loso – just a couple small leans to hold leaps – side aerial, secure – gainer full, holds it, chest forward

Cooke – FX – Iowa St – front 2/1, keeps it in bounds, just a little steppy – switch 1/2 to wolf full to wolf full, a little indistinct in landing rotation position on 1/2 – back 1/5 to front, a little low with a shuffle step. 9.750

Lazzari – UB – Florida – good first hs – hits tkatchev – toe on to pak, lovely pak – muscles up hs 1/2 turn on low and is a little past – large balance check stepping up to high, corrects with toe circle – FTDT, small hop. 9.650

Morris – VT – LIU – yfull, only a small step back.

Rotation 3 in Michigan

Mulligan – BB – Michigan – hits full turn – cat leap to aerial, secure – bhs loso, holds onto a lean – beat to split jump 1/2, wobble leg up – bhs tuck 1.5, step to the side. 9.800 is somewhat kind there.

Disidore had a clean one going on bars for Florida but ends up leaning chest past horizontal to try to hold onto her stuck dismount. 9.825

Guggino – BB – Michigan – full turn, hit – bhs loso, wobble – holds onto the straddle 1/2 landing, doesn’t really give away a check – side somi, secure – bhs 1.5, step forward. 9.850

Thompson – FX – Denver – attempts the 3/1, comes up under on the twist with a bounce to the side – switch side 1/2 to straddle 3/4 – front lay to rudi, good control, some knees in rudi, nice lay position

Wilson – BB – Michigan – bhs loso, high, keeps it on without showing a real adjustment – switch split jumps, solid – full turn, holds it – double tuck, little hop to the side

Wong finishes Florida’s bars rotation, hits first hs – maloney to pak, nice – hits hs on low – van leeuwen – DLO, stuck. Yes. 9.975

Iwai – FX – Denver – 1.5 to lay, not the highest but solid position and under control – switch 1/1, maybe a tad under – double tuck, small rebound

NC State comes back from a sub 49 bars with a strong 49.375 beam but will still trail Iowa State after 2.

Vore – BB – Michigan -bhs loso, secure, just some elbows – full turn – kickover with a wobble – 1.5 dismount, step. 9.875 with a wobble and a full tenth step

Hurd does bars exhibition, the handstands weren’t there but hit the dismount.

Mabanta – FX – Denver – front to rudi, hit – great ring 1/2 position – back 1.5 to lay, hit, just a little lower in the layout

Bauman – BB – Michigan – full turn – bhs loso, smooth, nice – split to straddle 1/2, beat jump – side somi, very small foot adjustment – gainer pike, stuck. Good. 9.925

Ulrich – FX – Denver – DLO, under control, chest down – switch side and a little on the way down, connects to popa – back 1.5 to front lay, whips over the lay a little – double pike, strong. 9.925

Brooks – BB – Michigan – bhs loso loso, right on – switch to beat, hit – full turn, a little quick on it – kickover, wobble – high 2/1 dismount, stuck. 9.950

Hutchinson – FX – Denver – front 2/1, around, good controlled step – switch 1/2 to split leap full, clear split positions – back 1.5 to front full, under control – rudi, lands a little forward but covers into the straddle jump. And she goes 9.975.

Draser starts beam for Florida with a second one until a lunge forward on dismount. 9.825

After 3:
Denver 148.275
Michigan 147.825

Michigan closer to on track. Still needs over 49.550 on floor to make this a counter, but they’ll expect that. Denver on track to increase that NQS by quite a bit with a hit beam.

Hinson has a time on bars for LIU, falls on jaeger, then rushes her overshoot in resuming, then a dismount to a forward roll.

Pilgrim – BB – Florida – bhs los and is totally off, falls, scraping along the beam on her way down – resumes with a solid aerial – switch to split leap, hit – bhs gainer full, stuck.

Ortega on floor for NC State misses her punch on a front full attempt and falls. Everyone’s really going to pieces in Florida right now.

And Bixler does an overshoot to stomach-bar now for LIU.

Lazzari – BB – Florida – bhs loso loso, holds it, smallest hesitation on landing – switch and split, lovely – full turn – split jump 3/4 – gainer full, step back. 9.900

Hall – FX – NC St – under control on rudi landing – back 1.5 to front lay, slightly short on lay landing, controls witha  step

Nguyen – BB – Florida – onodi and a wobble, leg up, no combination – has to redo onodi, gets it this time into bhs – full turn – switch to split, good back leg – bhs 1.5, a little short, step back. Still gets 9.825

Rotation 4 in Michigan, Iwai is off on her loso to lead off beam for Denver

Bauman – FX – Michigan – solid front 2/1 rotation, little bounce – switch 1/2 to wolf full wolf full, good clear completion positions – back 1.5 to front lay, secure – 9.925

Arana – BB – Florida – opens by tripping on the mat before starting – bhs loso, secure – aerial, holds it, smooth – switch to switch 1/2, shorter on the switch 1/2 but hits it – full turn – gainer full, stuck. Big performance, really just some foot form and position things.

Mulligan up 2nd on floor for Michigan – front through to double tuck, controls the landing, legs apart on double tuck – switch side 1/2 to straddle to shushunova – double pike, chest forward with a step. 9.900 is a lot.

Arana gets 9.925 to bring Florida to 49.400 on beam. Hurd in exhibition with a wobble on her split ring, and short dismount with a hop.

Guggino – FX – Michigan – front loso to double pike, secure, chest down some – switch side to popa – front lay to rudi, bounce back. 9.925

Negrete finishes floor for NC State, double pike, hit, some feet flexing – split leap full, comfortable – front full to front lay, under control – hitting leaps – double tuck, a little forward with a step. 9.900

Also Arkansas just got 49.550 on vault.

Brooks – FX – Michigan – FTDT, good controlled step – solid split leap full to jump full – front tuck through to double tuck, smallest rebound. 9.975

Mabanta – BB – Denver – hits wolf turn – bhs loso, good control – split leap to switch 1/2, rushes that one, doesn’t get to position and a wobble – switch to split, hit – gainer pike, a little forward, holds the stick. Still goes 9.900

Wilson – FX – Michigan – FTDT, controls the front foot – switch side 1/2 to straddle, high – front lay to rudi, excellent rise and under control. Well, she’s set up for it.

10.000 for Wilson.

Hutchinson – BB – Denver – kickover to bhs, secure – switch, small hesitation before split jump – ummmmm can we not cut away from a beam routine to see hugging? – gainer full, holds onto it. She goes 9.975 for a 39.825 AA.

Thaxton’s floor finishes the meet for Michigan, FTDT, hit, slide back – switch side and a little, into popa – front tuck through to double tuck, chest down, step forward.

So Denver finishes on 197.750. That will up their NQS to 197.700 as they move ahead of Alabama and Michigan State for the moment. Floor helps Michigan go 197.550, which turns this meet into a counter. They’ll increase NQS to 197.545 but won’t move higher than 10th.

KJ Johnson opens for LSU with a good stuck yfull to score 9.875.

Nguyen starting Florida’s floor rotation, front 2/1 to sissone, lovely – switch ring to switch 1/2, excellent – back 1.5 to front lay controls the step. 9.925

Arkansas goes 49.525 on bars. They’re going to get a 199 tonight.

Finnegan matches Johnson’s vault score with a 9.875 on her y1.5. Drayton lands short on her y1.5 with a shuffle step back, and apparently that’s the same for 9.850.

Ortega NC State with a bounce back on yfull for 9.800

Lazzari – FX – Florida – front 2/1 with a slide – split leap full to popa to popa, around – back 1.5 to front lay, good layout shape. 9.925

Now Schoenherr on vault for LSU, y1.5, little hop forward with some knees. 9.875 for that. All vaults are the same.

Loyim – Ub – Iowa State – hits a solid piked jaeger – pak, straddle, hit – can’t cast up on low, gets it the 2nd time with 1/2 turn, past – arch in hs on high – DLO, hop back.

Just as you’re asking yourself how on earth UNC is ranked so low with this quality of gymnastics, Schaefer falls on bars.

Ferris – FX – Florida – FTDT, solid, slide back – switch side to popa to popa, comes up under rotated on the final popa – back 1.5 to lay, shorter landing with a step. 9.850

Brock a bit bigger on the hop forward for LSU, so that one is 9.850.

Dekanoidze with a lovely bars for North Carolina, just a short DLO landing with step and chest forward. 9.850

Bryant – VT – LSU – hop back this week, 9.925. LSU vaults 49.400

Wozniak falls on her jaeger for UNC in the anchor spot, so they’ll be counting a fall.

Hurd – FX – Florida – DLO, hit, just a little chest position – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full, gets it around – front lay to front full, under control. Just some chest and amplitude things. And she gets another 9.925.

Pilgrim 5th on floor for Florida, 1.5 through to double tuck, little movement – split leap full to split jump full, around – front tuck – doubel pike, slide back, some feet and leg separation. 9.900

Blakely finishes the meet, front tuck through to double tuck, bounce back and some legs – switch to switch ring 1/2, good back leg ring position – back 1.5 to front full, a little under with a crossover step.

Bars bit Iowa State in the final rotation as they end on 195.825, which is not a counter and will potentially keep them vulnerable to Iowa on the final day.

NC State goes 196.825, which is a counter though sees them stay in 18th place for now.

Blakely goes 9.925 on floor because why not so Florida ends on 197.900, which takes them to a 197.905 NQS. That cannot be caught by Utah this week.

Aleah Finnegan is in the bars lineup to LSU today, caught her deltchev well, but a short landing on the double arabian with a lunge back for 9,875. McClain follows her in very similar fashion. great Church to pak combo, short landing on dismount with hop. And also 9.875

Schoenherr sticks her dismount with a stagger for 9.950. In Arkansas, Klein had a wobble on beam for 9.775, which they will hope to drop with Linton’s routine.

Bryant doesn’t stick her dismount, a little deep and then a small adjustment, but goes 9.975 to take LSU to 49.625 on bars and over 198 pace through two.

Linton sticks her 1.5 beam dismount to put Arkansas on 49.300 on beam.

With the program record sitting on 197.650, Arkansas only needs 49.300 on floor now to set a new one.

In other news, Utah went 49.500 on vault with 9.925s from Zirbes and McCallum, and Tabitha’s beam talk for Brenna Neault was a whole experience.

Alexeeva 5th on beam for Stanford hits her double wolf with a little lean, good series – arm wave wobble on switch 1/2 – switch to beat is strong – front gainer full, step back. 9.675. We ain’t in last week’s meet anymore?

Jeffrey has a big break on her loso series in the 2nd spot for LSU, turn to the side and leg up to horizontal. 9.675

Widner will finish the beam rotation for Stanford, switch to split, nice – bhs loso, smallest lean correction, great foot position – aerial to split jump, good – full turn – bhs gainer full, stuck. 9.925.

McClain follows the low score from Jeffrey with a lovely one for 9.975.

Klein is up 2nd on floor for Arkansas following 9.900 for Gamiao in the leadoff – front loso to double tuck, little adjustment step – switch side to popa to shushunova – double pike, larger on the lunge back. 9.900

Three tiny corrections on beam and a stuck dismount for Kiya Johnson for 9.925.

Bacskay is up 3rd on beam for Nebraska in the running for a very big team total – bhs bhs loso, loses leg form but secure – switch to split, shortish back leg – 2/1 dismount, staggered landing, holds with a lean

Jones third on floor for Arkansas good completion on front 2/1, big of adjusmtnet on rudi, and she gets another 9.975, so you feel like that whole “Arkansas doesn’t have a 10” thing is going to be short lived with three routines to go.

Smith is the first nominee, front loso to double tuck, solid, some cowboy – switch side into popa, high straddle positions, looks overturned on the switch side – double pike, stuck. 9.950

Bryant and Finnegan hit beam to 9.950 and 9.925 respectively, Finnegan leaning over to horizontal to try to hold her dismount, so LSU goes 49.575 on beam.

Spence finishes beam for Nebraska with a 1.5 hop forward and a 9.900.

Williams – FX – Arkansas – FTDT, step back, looks like she kept it on the line, but a big step – back 1.5 to front lay, solid pass – switch side to popa – double tuck, excellent landing and position in the air. 9.950.

So Arkansas already has a 198 with Price still to floor.

McClelland finishes for Nebraska on beam – wolf double, hit – bhs loso, very small teeter on landing – straddle jump to beat to stag ring, check – bhs 1.5, lean forward and a step. And a 9.900, This meet, you guys.

Price – FX – Arkansas – DLO, bounce back, so not going to happen today – switch side into gaint popas – front full to front lay, slide forward. 9.950.

So, sans 10 but Arkansas does program record 198.100. Nebraska is also like, “So competing at Arkansas is funnnn” for 197.375 road.

I’m going to call it there. We’ll assume every remaining routine for Utah, LSU, and Cal will be a 10.

  1. Arkansas home scoring is at the level of LSU. Absolutely bananas!

I hope judges are assigned to regionals by the NCAA and aren’t “locals” or the usual home judges.
