2024 Olympics – Women’s Qualification Live Blog

SUBDIVISION 1

Today’s first subdivision features teams Great Britain and Romania, joined by the trio from Mexico as well as individuals from South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, Indonesia, and Bulgaria.

With Romania starting on beam and the United Kingdom of Amanar starting on vault, be sure to tie yourself down right from the start.

We’re starting with Louise Vanhille pounding that stick. GB starting with their warmup Downie hugs.

Oh fun…we get randomly inserted commercials in the middle of sentences.

Rotation 1

In warmup, Martin just ran sternum first right into the vault. Get it out of your system?

Cosman – BB – Romania – switch mount, hit, connects to switch 1/2 to kotbut, well short on switch 1/2 position but connects the elements – wolf double, hit – side aerial to loso, hit, very small adjustment – aerial, little lean into split to straddle jump combo – switch, wobble – 2.5 dismount, large lunge to the side. A hit Olympic beam. 12.833

13.833 for Fenton to lead off GB with a Y1.5.

Martin – VT – GB – DTY, hit vault, large bound backward and an additional step, some leg crossing throughout and a stagger landing. 13.766

13.733 bars for Rooskrantz. 11.833 floor for Sandoval.

Kinsella – VT – GB – Amanar is posted but only does the DTY, pretty large leg separation on the block, bounce back. 13.933

Lashchevska – UB – Ukraine – inbar – maloney to pak, hit – stalder to toe shoot to high – inbar 1/2 to jaeger, nice height – short 1/2 turn on high – toe full, past vertical – FTDT, hop. Good. 13.033

Ghigoarta went 13.266 on beam.

Barbosu – BB – Romania – front tuck mount, little hop forward – fhs to front tuck, holds solidly – switch to switch 1/2 to korbut, solid as well – wolf double, good – side aerial, secure – split leap full attempt, well short of split and shouldn’t get rotation credit – 2.5 dismount, hop.

Romaniaaaaaaaa, you hit three beams at the Olympics. 13.533 for Barbosu.

Moreno goes 12.800 on floor. We haven’t been given the Evans vault, but she went for the Amanar and hit for 14.200. 41.966 vault for GB. Useful.

Voinea – BB – hits layout full, leg up wobble – wolf to sissone – bhs layout, arm wave correction – aerial, hit – side aerial, comfortable – split jump 1/2, good initial split position shown – switch, check – switch 1/2 to bhs hit, no series bonus – double tuck dismount, bounce back

It’s 14.000 for Voinea, our first score that’s a potential beam finalist based on how things go later.

Romania goes 40.799 on beam, compared to 38.965 from their 10th place finish last year.

A rotation break look back at Rooskrantz on bars – shaposh to pak, hit – toe full to van leeuwen – good height on piked jaeger – Church to gienger, hit with a big of form – full out dismount, shorter landing with hop forward.

Rotation 2

Escalera has scratched both vault and floor so far.

Bickel – BB – switch mount to switch 1/2 to staddle to split, leg up wobble, love the speed from the mount to the 1/2 – aerial, little arm wave – bhs bhs back pike series is hit – wolf double – side somi, lean forward, brings it back – 2.5 dismount, hop. 13.066

GB has an 11.200 from Evans on bars in the leadoff. 13.333 leadoff floor from Ghigoarata as Romania continues to cruise.

Fenton – UB – GB – clear hip tkatchev – toe tkatchev 1/2 to yezhova, hit – maloney to pak – misses foot on low bar, adds an extra cast hs – van leeuwen, caught with some form – giant full gets a little crooked, really fighting it into FTDT, chest well down, lunge forward. 12.833

Moreno – VT1 – Mexico – hits her rudi, chest down fairly far and a step back 14.166

And it’s just 11.900 for Kinsella on bars, which GB  will have to count. Trouble brewing.

Moreno – VT 2 – Mexico – Tsuk 2/1, gets it around – also chest well down, leg crossing throughout. 13.733, avg 13.949. That would have been enough to get back to the final at worlds last year.

Downie – UB – GB – toe full to stalder tkatchev 1/2 to yezhova to maloney to clear hip tkatchev, hit the combo – stalder tkatchev to pak – van leeuwen, solid – short hs on high – FTDT, little hop. She hit it.

Barbosu went 13.600 on floor.

Voinea – FX – Romania – DLO 1/1, good control on landing – double double, step back, looked OOB from here – switch 1/1, around – DLO into punch front, just does get it to her feet but a lowwww landing squat and lunge back – double tuck, solid – switch ring to split full, just a little shy of split.

Extended wait for Downie’s score as judges decide how much they hate greatness.

Voinea gets a 13.800 despite that DLO punch front and will lead the floor standings. Romania 40.733 on floor.

14.666 for Downie. A big exhale moment for her as it looks like they gave the 1/2 turn on the stalder tkatchev.

But still 39.399 for GB on bars which will put them behind Romania after 2. GB still has to beam and Romania still has to bars.

A look back at Barbosu – hits whip to FTDT with a bounce back – pike jump full – 2.5 to front full, a bit low but gets it to her feet with a slide – split leap 1.5, pretty solid completion of rotation as far as split leap 1.5s go – double tuck to punch front, good height –

After 2
Romania 81.532
Great Britain 81.365

Rotation 3

Evans – BB – GB – candle mount, hit – wolf double, hit – switch, little pause before sissone – bhs bhs loso, hit – double turn, does it well – aerial, arm wave – 2.5 dismount, big bounce forward and a hop. Important starting hit for GB. 12.600.

13.000 for Ghigoarta on a Yfull.

Fenton – BB – GB – loso mount, steps back to keep it under control – double turn, lovely – side aerial to bhs, break but keeps herself together with a wobble – aerial to split, pause – wolf triple, hit – switch to sissone, check – double tuck dismount, hop. OK now, two beam hits. 13.500.

Irfanaluthfi – UB – INA – only doing bars – clear hip, tries 1/2 turn and hops off – obviously deeply injured – clear hip to 1/2 to piked jaeger – giant full -pak, hits vertical with leg break – shoot to high – giants, won’t try to dismount on her leg, will hop off and salute.

Barbosu – VT 1 – Romania – Tsuk 1/2, around, lunge to the side and knee form. 13.800

Barbosu – VT 2 – Romania – Y1.5, hit, a bit short with a hop back,

We didn’t see Downie’s beam but a 13.400 is a big important hit score for them as they weren’t out of the Romanian woods if they’d had a mess on beam.

Voinea – VT – Romania – DTY, survives it, not the farthest and lots of leg crossing but a hit. 13.666

Escalera – UB – Mexico – she will do bars – van leeuwen, hit – blind to piked jaeger – tkachtev, flexed feet, connects to pak – maloney to gienger, hit with leg separation – giant full is past – FTDT, two steps back – and whatever leg injury is happening requires her coach to carry her off the podium. 12.800

Feels like soooooo many of the qualified individuals are barely able to Lympics this year.

13.433 beam for Kinsella, which completes a miracle of miracles British beam rotation hit.

After 3
Romania 122.498
Great Britain 121.698

Now Romania will be required to bars as GB goes to floor. We look back at Kinsella’s beam – wolf double, hit with arm wave – aerial, check before split and straddle – another small tightness correction – side aerial to loso is secure – switch to switch 1/2, wobble – 2.5 dismount, crossover step. Actually a bit surprised she got out of this with an E score in the 8s.

Rotation 4

Fenton – FX – GB – Y spin double to double turn – front 2/1, a little short, hop back – wolf double, around – double tuck, large bounce back OOB – switch – split leap full – 2.5, another step forward OOB and some leg crossing – switch 1/2. 12.466 for a 52.632 AA.

Georgieva – VT 1 – Bulgaria – DTY, very nice distance, clean form, step back. 14.166

Georgieva – VT 2 – Bulgaria – Tsuk 1.5, hit, large bounce forward. 13.833. And a 13.999 average puts her ahead of Moreno.

Bickel – VT – SUI – clean yfull, just a little pike, bounce back. 13.366. So no vault for Rooskrantz?

12.833 floor for Evans, and a 50.833 AA score.

Deeply concerned that we haven’t seen any Romanian bars scores yet.

And now it’s 10.933 for Preda.

Lashchevska hits a yfull.

Martin – FX – GB – double double, hit, step back – popa, around – DLO, bounce back and some leg separation – split leap full, switch 1/2 – front loso to double tuck, bounce back – wolf double – double pike, bounce back. 13.266

But second Romania bars for Ghigoarta is 13.066 extending the edge on GB. Here we goooooo

Cosman – UB – Romania – clear hip – toe full and can;t get it around, collapses onto the bar and falls. Never mind, here we don’t go. mresumes with maloney to pak to van leeuwen, nice – jaeger, hit – 1/2 turn on high, not bad finish – giant full is well past – FTDT, bounce back. 11.333

It’s just 12.733 for Kinsella on floor, so they’ll finish on 160.532, adn Ghigoarta will beat all the Brits in the AA.

Barbosu would need 13.933 bars.

Barbosu – UB – Romania – maloney to clear hip, only does a 1/2 and had to add giants and correct for an extra 1/2 turn – clear hip tkatcehv piked to pak is hit – shaposh with 1/2 turn on backswing to yezhova – van leeuwen, leg separation – FTDT, good landing, little hop.

Ruby Evans floor raised to 13.133 on inquiry.

TEAM
Great Britain – 160.830
Romania – 159.497

Romania made is closssssse. And put up a very good number that the team final challengers will have to beat. Barbosu is our AA leader on 53.533.

And now we move on to THE subdivision, subdivision 2, with the US, Italy, China, and Kaylia Nemour all mashed together. NBC is giving us the event feeds for this one, which I think I’ll go with to curate my own viewing experience. But then I also have no one to blame when I miss an important routine.

SUBDIVISION 2

Need an important audio clip of Olly saying Snoop Dogg.

Esposito – FX – Italy – hits wolf – DLO, solid, just a little movement – switch full, some feet – doubel y to illusion hit – finishes with double pike, bounce back and some leg separation. 13.633

Chiles – BB – USA – front pike mount, big wobble but keeps it on – bhs loso loso secure – aerial to straddle to bhs, gets the connection, wobble after – side somi – side aerial, comfortable – switch side, hit – double pike hop back. Gets a hit out there, pulls it back after the mount wobble. 13.600 is a big number for her with that mount

Ou – VT – China – yfull, hit, large bounce back, some pike throughout

Kevric – UB – Germany – inbar full to vl, good flight – inbar 1/2 to piekd jaeger, hit – stalder tkatchev piked, hit, some foot form – pak, clean – van leeuwen, good legs together – FTDT, little hop. 14.600, nearly passes Downie.

D’Amato – FX – Italy – double y spin – double double, hit, step back – 3/1, bounce back – switch to split leap full

Rivera – BB – USA – wolf double, hit – side aerial, tighter with a check – bhs loso, larger leg up wobble – switch, pause – switch 1/2, wobble – aerial to split to straddle, weirdddd mistake, step back and her shin touches the beam but stays secure somehow – dismounts deep with a lunge forward. 12.633

Zhang gets her Tsuk 2/1 to her feet, chest down

Nemour – UB – inbar full to unbar nabieva to pak, nice – inbar shap to stalder full to stkachev tkatchev 1/2 to yezhova to stalder shap 1/2 – toe full – DLO, hop. Nice. Big one. 15.600 you know.

Iorio – FX – Italy – front 2/1, step – 2.5, hop forward and some leg crossing – switch ring – split leap full, around – double y to illusion – back spin – doubel pike, a little deep but gets it, bounce back – 12.800

Lee – BB – USA – just the sit split mount – kindnddd of pulls around the wolf triple, gets slow at the end but brings her foot in there – aerial, leg-up wobble – split to bhs, no series – switch to switch 1/2 to split ring jump, arm wave – side aerial to single loso, no second loso – arm wave – switch ring, step back – gaienr pike full, good control on landing. So a big downgrade set for her and a bunch of checks, but a stay on.

Andreoli – FX – Italy – wolf double, quick – whip through to pike full, hits it, bounce back – back full to double tuck, hits it, little hop – switch – switch full to knee – y spin double to illusion – front loso to double pike, deep landing in the knees but under control. 13.500

14.033 for Lee. 6.0 D and an 8.033 E. Another who had a lot of checks but still got an 8 E score, which is an early trend. Ahead of Voinea, and into the lead on beam.

Biles – BB – switch mount – switch to switch 1/2 to back pike, secure but doesn’t connect the whole thing – wolf triple, solid – aerial to split to straddle, secure – bhs loso loso, holds it securely, ever so slight body flinch – side aerial – bhs bhs FTDT, hop back. A big hit out of the way early.

Italy goes 40.833 on floor, which is an upgrade on how they scored on floor at 2023 worlds, so a solid opening there. China 40.099 on vault which is also better than 2023 for them.

14.733 beam for Biles. Into the event lead by 7 tenths.

After 1
USA 42.366
Italy 40.833
China 40.099

Rotation 2

Esposito – VT – Italy – goes for the DTY and its a nice one, bounce back and some leg crossing. 14.133

Schaefer – BB – Germany – switch mount to switch, split ring leap, solid –  bhs loso, arm wave wobble – switch ring, little hop forward – double spin, huge break, lean forward at the hips, leg way up – hits the Schaefer, wobble – aeiral to split jump to stag ring, nice – side aerial, wobble – gainer layout dismount, hop

Lee goes OOB on her final double tuck on floor. 13.100

Iorio – VT – Italy – DTY as well, has a bit more trouble on hers, larger bounce back and then a hoppy step

Luo opens bars with 13.900 for China.

Qiu – UB – China – inbar 1/2 to e pieouettes to layout jaeger, hit – inbar full to stalder tkatchev piked – pak – van leeuwen, clean – FTDT, hop forward. Didn’t connect absolutely everything but a good hit. 15.066 with a 6.8 D. Big Q edge to Nemour.

Chiles – FX – USA – DLO 1/1, good secure landing – front full to FTDT, a little short, chest down, hop – wolf 2.5 ish – switch- split leap 1.5, a little under rotated, bounces around – DLO, shortish, hop – piked 1/1 shushunova. A couple landings in there. A hit. 13.866 ahead of Voinea.

Scores tell me D’Amato missed her DTY for 13.200.

Andreoli – VT – hits y1.5, hop forward, knees throughout

Zhang – UB – China – good layout jaeger – high tkatchev to pak, a little loss of rhythm on pak catch – maloney to gienger, hit, slight dead hang – FTDT, hop forward. 14.700, ahead of Downie’s mark.

Nemour – BB – Algeria – loso mount to immediate loso, excellent – bhs bhs layout 2 feet, secure – wolf double – side aerial, solid – switch to switch 1/2, well short of split, wobble –  aerial, large break at hips – split to korbut – sissone to a short wolf jump with a check – double pike, step back. 13.200

Carey – FX – USA – DLO 1/1, hit with little hop – DLO, bounce back, looked OOB? – switch full to popa – struggles with the landing on her FTDT  front tuck through to….and she balked it again, only does a back tuck and takes it to her back. So that downgrade from podium was a sign of more. 10.633.

Biles – FX – USA – triple double, big bounce back OOB – front full to double double, bounce back, stays in – split leap 1.5, turn around – wolf double – BIles 1, lunge forward, no connection – switch full – DLO, chest a little forward with a shuffle. Not her mostest floor but a big score. 14.600

41.632 vault for Italy. 43.732 bars for China. Useful numbers for both.

After 2
USA 83.932
China 83.831
Italy 82.465

US just staying ahead of China after China’s bars. Going to be some decisions to make about the team final floor lineup.

Carey – VT 1 – Cheng is hit – hop back/sideward – legs on block, some knees. 14.666 is big.

Qiu – BB – China – bhs mount, hit – into straddel to double stag – bhs arabian is very deep and falls – this is why we can’t have nice things – switch to switch 1/2 to korbut – aerial, pause before split ring jump to bhs, hit –  switch ring, lovely – full turn – doubel pike dismount, lunge forward. 13.533

After 3
USA 128.731
China 125.963
Italy 125.663

Chiles currently has .533 on Lee in the AA, which is not insignificant, even though Lee can make that up with a good bars.

Luo Huan ends up the #2 beamer for China, but she’s already in 5th in the event standings. Downie is also now down to 5th on bars.

Rotation 4

Esposito – BB – Italy – bhs mount o bhs loso, right on – switch to split jump 1/2 to bhs, smooth connection – aerial, check – side aerial, feet btu secure, connects to split jump – wolf hit – double pike dismount, solid, little movement. 13.966

Chiles – UB – USA – van leeuwen, solid  – piked jaeger, hit – toe full to tkatchev piked to pak – maloney to gienger, right on – FTDT, step forward. Her usual secure routine. 14.266. Lee would need a big one now. 56.065 for Chiles.

Qiu – FX – China – FTDT, step back- rudi is nice, secure landing – double tuck, step back – switch ring – switch 1/2, nice –

Iorio falls on beam mount – having her foot looked at after the routine. It does not look like it feels good.

Team After 2
USA 172.296
Italy 166.861
China 166.628
GB 160.830
Romania 159.497

AA
Biles 59.566
Lee 56.132
Nemour 55.966
Esposito 55.898
D’Amato 55.432

For apparatuses, Biles and Carey lead on vault. Bars is getting intense already as Downie’s 14.666 is already down to 6th, and while many of the expected bars finalists have already competed, not all have.

On beam, Zhou has the slight lead on Biles, with Lee in 3rd, and the cutoff is currently Barbosu on 13.533. Biles and Chiles have the edge on floor, with Chiles just ahead of Voinea and D’Amato. The cutoff for Floor is already 13.533, and at last year’s worlds it ended up being 13.666.

SUBDIVISION 3

On to the third subdivision!

Why are they making us watch routines from Subdivision 2? Where is the broadcast, my people?

Oh OK now we’re here to see Volleman hit a double tuck on floor – back 1.5 to front full, knees and a step – double y spin into illusion –  double L to full turn, will get all this turn credit – triple turn – did a quad turn to double turn earlier, leaning out of the fourth turn but connecting it. 12.566

Finnegan – BB – “from the Phillipines, actually living in Missouri” tell me you don’t know without telling me you don’t know – SHE’S COLLEGE TEAMMATES WITH LIVVY DUNNE. OMG DID SHE GET HER AUTOGRAPH???? – goes for the Arabian, super high but can’t control it and falls – bhs loso loso good form, little control adjustment – switch to sissone – switch ring, secure – aerial, lean to the side correction, breaks connection to straddle split – side aerial to bhs to 1.5 dismount, nice control, only small movement. 11.466

Jung Ruivivar went 11.866 on beam.

An Chang Ok first vault is a solid DTY, good landing control, pikes down at the end. 14.066

An VT 2 – Cheng is hit, lots of form, step back, but gets 14.300. She’ll be into 3rd on vault behind Biles and Carey.

Lieke gets 12.300 on floor. 13.566 bars for Kishi for Japan, a very nice score.

Malabuyo – BB – wolf double, solid – also goes for the Arabian, just does keep hers on the beam but grabs the beam – bhs loso is nice – aerial, small check – split to straddle – split ring jump, check – side aerial, lovely – switch – 1.5 dismount, hop forward. 12.233

Blanco – VT – y1.5, nice one, little hop and a bit of knees. Alabama 9.925. 13.466

Nakamura – UB – Japan – DEF! And she hits it – inbar full, past into piked gienger – inbar 1/2 to piked jaeger – pak – toe shoot to high – toe full to FTDT, hop back, Good for her. 13.600

Visser just 12.233 on floor for NED, so that would be a miss.

Japan goes 40.432 on bars, ahead of GB’s score there.

Rotation 2

Finnegan – FX – double arabian to stag, solid, stag a little too low – back 2.5 to front tuck, good foot form, lands slightly short but finesses – switch ring – split leap 1.5 attempt, not quite around – split jump full – L turn – front 2/1, crossover step. 12.733

Okamura – BB – loso mount, wobble, keeps it on – switch, nice – side aerial to loso, holds onto it with a little squeeze – aerial to split to straddle, solid – wolf 1.5 – side somi – switch ring, secure – 2.5 dismount, jarred that landing with a big hop forward. 13.633 is in the beam 8 for now, but only just.

Malabuyo – FX – DLO, short landing with a lunge forward – 1.5 to front full to stag, form int he front full – switch ring, nice – also tries to wrench around a split 1.5 – wolf triple, nice – switch 1/2 – double pike, solid chest position – hop back. 13.100, good number

Kishi – BB – Japan – wolf double, good – side aerial, hit – bhs loso – switch ring, holds it – side somi, big lean back and forth, keeps it on – aerial to split to straddle, pretty elements, another woble after – her split ring leap is a split ring leap, check – double pike, good landing control. 13.500, below Okamura.

Blanco – UB – toe full to maloney to pak – van leeuwen – good legs togehter – blind, past to front giant 1/2 – FTDT, holds onto the stick with a little lean movement. 12.833

This is where the NBC arrows realy fall apart, because that’s a nice score for her composition.

Martins – UB – toe full – maloney, good height into pak – van leeuwen, legs together, solid amplitude – clear hip to blidn to piked jaeger, hit – past on 1/2 turn – DLO, step back. Good.

Ushioku – BB – Japan – loso mount, hit with check – bhs loso, solid – side aerial, some knee and movement but hit – side somi, solid – wolf 1.5 – switch to split – 2.5 twist, little hop. She wouldn’t have been called upon to do beam on a Miyata team but that was a good solid hit routine.

Jung-Ruivivar – FX – wolf double, not quite around, wouldn’t give credit – whip to double tuck, little hop back – back 1.5 to front full, some leg crossing, step forward OOB – double y, also drops a little early – switch and switch 1/2, gorgeous – double pike, hop back

After 2
Japan 81.165
Netherlands 77.232

Japan on good pace through bars and beam, though the depth on floor and vault is what I’m worried about on this four-member team.

Rotation 3

Nakamura – FX – wolf triple – front 2/1 to front tuck, lands both feet OOB – double pike, bounce back – split leap full – back 1.5 to front full, solid, little hop, some knees – double y spin – 2.5 to front pike, stuck. 13.266, you take that. And they only took for 1 foot OOB.

Jung-Ruivivar – VT – Y1.5, nearly sticks, ends up with a slide back. 13.600

Visser – UB – Netherlands – stalder tkatchev 1/2 to yezhova – stalder full to stalder shap to pak, nice – van leeuwen – toe full, good finish to FTDT, little slide and a step salute. 14.266

Blanco – BB – wolf double, smooth – bhs loso loso, hit, little check lean to the left – aerial, arm wave correction – switch to switch 1/2, lovely foot positions – switch ring, big break, large lean forward at the waist and arm wave – side aerial, pulls it back on the beam with an arm wave – 1.5 dismount, little lean and step

Finnegan – VT1 – Y1.5, some knees, absorbs with a slide forward salute. 13.733

Kishi – FX – Japan – double double, solid, little hop – front full to rudi, small bounce back – wolf double, around, same with the double y spin – doubel tuck, chest up, little bounce – switch ring – split ring 1/2 – double pike, chest down, step forward. 13.600, great number.

Veerman – UB – jaeger, hit – stalder tkatchev piked to pak, hit – seitz, catches and connects to bhardwaj, kind of all over the place but hit the combo – van leeuwen, little leg break – toe full, nice finish to FTDT, little slide – 14.400

Ushioku – FX – Japan – 1.5 thtorugh to double pike, bounce back – front 2/1 to front full, good quick twisting, hop – switch – split leap 1.5, not quite around but close – back 2.5 to front pike, hop forward OOB.

Good floor rotation from Japan, putting themselves in position that they are OK counting one low vault score to still get ahead of GB. Need only 39.6, and every country has been above 40 on vault so far.

Martins – BB – bhs mount, hit smoothly – side aerial to bhs, under control – switch to switch 1/2, no checks – y spin, lowish y position but securely complete – wolf to sissone, hit – aerial, little lean – split leap 3/4 with a leg up wobble – 2/1, step back. 12.600

Rotation 4

Blanco – FX – wolf triple, good – double tuck, bounce back – switch full, around – front 2/1, a little bouncy – switch – split leap full – double pike, larger bounce back. 12.633

Kishi – VT – Japan – really solid DTY with a stick.

Ushioku – VT – Japan – DTY, gets it around, a straddle on the block and a bounce back, but they got their two DTYs so it should be a solid rotation score. 13.866

Okamura – VT – Japan – Tsuk full is a bit of a struggle, short landing, pike, hop forward, but they didn’t need it to be great. And gets 13.033, which is better than I thought.

Nakamura – VT – Japan – Yfull is fine, clean in the air, larger bounce back

L Wevers – BB – bhs mount – side aerial to bhs, hit, some foot form – L turn 1.5 – double turn – side somi, good – aerial, holds securely – split to wolf – gainer pike full, chest down, step forward. 13.366

Jung Ruivivar and Malabuyo will tie on 51.099. Finnegan 50.498.

S Wevers – BB – bhs mount to wolf jump full, hits elements, maybe a little slow in combo but nice – L double attempt, drops leg too early – side aerial to bhs, hit – aerial, holds with small lean – l turn to full turn, pause – double turn to split leap, again nice elements but loses the whole series – gainer pike full, small step. A pretty routine but did she lose too much in composition? Not yet. 13.766 puts her in 7th on beam.

Heron – FX – Biles 1, hit, step – DLO, hop back – wolf double, maybbbe just gets it around – back 1.5 to front full, secure with some knees – switch and split leap full – double pike, small hop. 13.033

TEAM
USA 172.296
Italy 166.861
China 166.628
Japan 162.196
Great Britain 160.830
Romania 159.497
Netherlands 159.096

Kishi moves into 7th AA, Nakamura 11th, Martins 12th.

No Japan in the beam final. Luo’s 13.733 is now the cutoff with two subs to go

SUBDIVISION 4

France, Canada, and South Korea grace this subdivision, with a critical opening rotation for France on bars—the one rotation where you wonder whether they have dropped tenths since worlds last year without that Charpy routine.

Osyssek – UB – France – toe full and misses her feet on her next toe on element and is off the bars – resumes with maloney to pak with a straddle – van leeuwen, hit, also a large leg break – jaeger, solid – toe 1/2, past – double front, lunge forward. 11.600

Brown – FX – Haiti – DLO, good, shuffle back – switch to split leap full, foot position, around – back 1.5 to front full, steps forward – double turn – switch 1/2 – doubel tuck, bounce back. 12.233

Boyer – UB – France – maloney to 1/2 turn to yezhova, – van leeuwen – legs separations but hitting – pikd jaeger, solid – quick 1/2 turn on high – toe full is solid – FTDT, kind of a cannonball but hits it, hop to the side. 13.200 is useful.

Black VT 1 – Canada – handspring front 1/1, good, medium bounce forward. 14.100

Van Eijken – UB – France – jaeger, hit – pak, solid – clear hip to shaposh to clear hip 1/1, past – giant 1/2 – DLO, hop back. Through it. 13.033.

Black VT 2 – Canada – Tsuk 1.5, almost identical, medium hop forward. Same E score. Averages 14.000 on vault and into 4th.

Olsen VT 1 – Canada – starts with the Cheng and lives to tell the tale – good control on landing – knees and body position and whatnot, lots of tucking but a near stick. 14.433

Olsen VT 2 – Canada – DTY, less control here but a solid hit, medium bounce back and then another hop. 14.166 average goes into 4th ahead of Black.

DJDS – UB – France – inbar shap to inbar 1/2 to yzhova, takes it too close and has to add a hip circle on low – maloney tries to connect to giant full and goes over the wrong way and is off the bars – nope!!!! – resumes with maloney to giant full – stalder tkatchev piked – pak is lovely – as is van leeuwen – short hs on high – DLO 1/1, hop forward

Canada goes 42.133 on vault, second to the US there thus far.

Still waiting on Melanie’s bars score because no one wants to have to look at it. 12.233. France opens with 38.466 on bars, which is behind GB’s “we only have Becky” 39.399 on bars.

But Melnaie does have the best armpit fan at the Olympics.

Rotation 2

Devillard – BB – France – switch mount – side aerial, secure – bhs loso, large break, step back, and falls – aerial to split, leans through it to straddle jump – switch to switch side, hits with arm wave – side somi, and a second fall – full turn, check – doubel pike, huge stumble back, about three lunges. More trouble for France, although they will not have been planning to count Devillard’s beam anyway. 10.866

13.566 for a Y1.5 for Lynnzee Brown. 12.166 leadoff bars for Cassie Lee for Canada.

Osyssek – BB – France – switch mount – switch to split jump 1/2, solid – layout 2 feet series, step back, keeps it on the beam – switch 1/2, leg up wobble – full turn – side aerial, solid – side somi, hit – double pike, hop back. She stayed on the boat. 13.533

Black – UB – Canada – maloney to clear hip tkatchev – clea r hip tkatchev pike 1/2 to yezhova, solid – van leeuwen, legs together – giant full – toe layout 1/2 dismount, stuck. Some handstands and feet form, otherwise very strong. 14.166

Boyer – BB – France – layout 2 feet, solid, right on – aerial, pause before split to bhs series – side aerial, secure – switch, pause before switch 1/2, secure – side somi, connect to split 1/2 from side, big wobble but stays on – sissone to full turn, another wobble – double pike, little hop.She gets the requisite 7.9 or 8.0 E score for every wobbly beam routine and goes 13.766

13.766 moves Boyer past Luo and into the final beam spot for now.

DJDS – BB – France – front tuckish mount, leg up wobble – bhs layout 2 feet, secure, and then an arm wave – switch to switch 1/2, another pretty big break, leg up wobble – aerial to split to bhs series is connected – full turn – side aerial, and now a huge break, grabs the beam – sissone to pike jump – double pike, chest forward, step.

I would like to register that I don’t like what’s happening here.

Also we have seen none of South Korea but Lee Yunseo got 10.066 on floor.

Canada with another useful event score, 41.132 on bars.

12.366 for DJDS on beam. 39.665 for France on beam. They still have a little bit of an edge on Romania on those two events but will need to successfully floor now.

Rotation 3

Boyer – FX – France – double L turn, around – front full to double tuck, chest down, lunge forward – leg up full to split full, around – double pike, gets it around, hop forward, thought it was going to be too low but she survives it – y spin 2.5ish – switch 1/2 – wolf double, around – 12.833.

Lee opens beam for Canada with 13.466, a good score on the event she’s here to do.

Van Eijken – FX – France – DLO 1/1, bounce back OOB with both feet – front full through to double tuck, solid, little slide back – wolf, only a single – FTDT, good, slide back – leg up hop full, not sure if high enough, to switch side – double pike, hop

Not that South Korea exists apparently, but Yeo gets 14.400 for her rudi

Ellie Black just 13.100 on beam.

14.183 vault average puts Yeo into 3rd, An 4th, Olsen 5th, Black 6th

Just 12.500 for Van Eijken on floor, which is not what they need.

Osyssek – FX – France – double double, steps back OOB – DLO, a little short, hop forward – leg up full, more realistic, to switch 1/2 – front loso to double tuck, way off to the side and short, falls with a forward roll out of it – popa – double pike, stagger bounce back.

France’s meet has been a bit…that decapitated Marie Antoinette from the opening ceremony

12.033 for Osyssek.

DJDS – FX – France – DLO 1/1, very solid, stuck landing, a bit of pike – split jump full – DLO is way short and she falls – switch ring to switch full – wolf double, nice – front loso to double tuck, shorter landing, step forward – 12.700

This French team was designed for vault, but they now need a 43.3+ to catch Romania. DJDS also needs a big vault score to keep her in the race to advance to the AA final and Brazil hasn’t even happened, looking very tough even for that.

Rotation 4

Long wait even to rotate as they evaluate an inquiry on Tran’s beam routine.

Osyssek – VT – France – a clean yfull, hop back. 13.300

DJDS – VT – France – DTY, solid one, hits it, bounce back an an extra step.

Did he just call her “Melanie Zayzus Dos Santos”?

14.200 for Melanie, gives her 51.499 AA score, which won’t be able to withstand the 5th subdivision AAers.

Van Eijken VT 1 – handspring rudi is a solid hit, pretty large lunge back, but a good one, leg cross, some pike at the end. 14.233

Van Eijken VT 2 – Tsuk 1/1, solid, somewhat large bounce back. 13.333. 13.783 avergae won’t make it back to the EF.

Ellie Black went 54.766, and is currently the #7 qualifier.

Devillard  VT 1 – handspring rudi hit but chest down with a step forward. 14.200

42.633 vault rotation for France, which is a good score, but they will not advance to the team final.

Devillard VT 2 – Tsuk 1/1, chest down, step back. 13.650 average.

Only finalists right now for France are DJDS in 23rd AA and Boyer in 8th BB, with Brazil still to come.

Tran – FX – Canada – wolf 1.5 – double tuck, bounce back – double y – switch ring – split leap full – front full – double pike, chest down, bounce back – switch 1/2, good

13.066 puts Canada on 161.563 as they advance to the team final. Gb also guaranteed in now. Romania in 7th will need to fight off Australia to make TF.

SUBDIVISION 5

Oliveira – VT – Brazil – hits a yfull, lunge back and some leg form, flexed feet, pike. 12.900

We’re viewing this from the stands for some reason?

Barbosa – VT – Brazil – DTY, just a little deep with a crossover lunge back, hit. 13.733

Whitehead 12.733 to start Australia’s floor. Figuring we’re…not going to see a lot of Australia on this feed based on how we’ve started.

Saraiva – VT- Brazil – DTY, good one, solidly around, step back, little leg separation. 14.100

Andrade VT 1 – Brazil – Cheng, glorious obviously, step back and out of the area. 14.900 with a 9.4 E score.

Brazil goes 42.733 on vault, second to the US there.

Andrade – VT 2 – Brazil – DTY today, comfortable for her, hop back

14.683 average for Andrade, easily into 2nd on vault.

Szekely – UB – Hungary – got in after all with the Kovacs withdrawal – stalder full to stalder shaposh to pak – maloney to gienger, hit, a little low – rushes hs on high – piked jaeger, some elbows – giant 1/2 – toe full to FTDT, short landing, lunge forward. 13.433

Andrade looking at that vault total with resting upgrade face.

Andrade getting the Simone “closeup of her face while other significant routines are happening” treatment.

Derwael – BB – loso mount and immediately falls – bhs bhs loso, small check – switch to split leap, lovely back leg position – aerial, little pause before split ring jump – side somi, holds onto it – jussst pulls around her wolf triple like Suni – fulfills the side cheoregraphy like they want to see – gainer pike full dismount, step back. 12.766. They were going to get massive for that routine if she had hit.

12.866 for Ruby pass leads Australia’s floor rotation. Which we look back on now – double arabian, solid landing – FTDT, bounce back – switch to split leap full, around – wolf double – back 1.5 to front tuck, hop – switch 1/2, nice – double tuck, hop. 7.766 E, we’ve seen weaker routines do better today.

Rotation 2

Casabuena – FX – Spain – piked full in, bounce back – front loso to double tuck, chest forward, only a little movement – 2.5, leg crossing, lunge forward – nice switch ring, to split leap full- switch 1/2 – double pike, leg separation, little hop. 13.033

Oliveira – UB – Brazil – maloney to pak, smooth – toe on to van leeuwen, solid – front giant full to piked jaeger, good height – rushes hs – late on some of these higgins – double front, larger lunge back. 13.233

Barbosa – UB – Brazil – toe full to toe on to stalder shap 1/2 turn to yezhova, little leg break, hit – maloney to tkatchev, clipped her foot on the bar, kept going – DLO, jelly legs with a couple lunges back. 12.733

13.600 and 13.200 on vault for Whitehead and Nedov, both 9.000 Es.

Saraiva – UB – Brazil – toe full to tkathev piked to pak, gets it, good – toe on to maloney to gienger, lower but caught – double front,  lovely toe point, step back. Solid. 13.800, nice number.

Andrade – UB – Brazil – maloney to stqakder full to tkatchev piked to pak, right on – van leeuwen, good form – nearly overbalances hs but pulls it back, great save – piked jaeger, hit – toe full to FTDT, little hop. Hit. 14.400 won’t make it back to the bars final though.

Biles remains in the final qualifying spot on bars, with Derwael still to come in the last rotation.

Brazil 41.433 on bars, which is 4th there, behind China, the US, and Italy.

Rotation 3

Soares – BB – Brazil – soares mount, hit – wolf triple, solid – bhs loso, hit securely – aerial to split jump to back tuck, check, arm wave, gets the series – switch, a little pause before the switch 1/2, foot position on landing – wolf to sissone – double pike, good one, hop

And it’s 13.800 already, into the beam final barring getting 2 pered by the rest of the gang. She can’t believe how high these beam scores are either.

Barbosa – BB – Brazil – loso mount, step back to keep it on the beam – layout 2 feet, leg up wobble – switch side, secure, slightly angled split position – full turn, check – tour jete – side aerial, small waver – switch to straddle to back tuck, gets the series, another waver correction on landing – double pike, hop back. 13.100

Saraiva – BB – Brazil – bhs mount, hit – full turn – bhs loso loso, holds securely – switch ring, wobble – aerial to split ring jump, little pause before bhs – side somi, nice – switch leap and she splits the beam and falls onto the beam, grabs on for dear life, pulls herself back up – double pike dismount, step back. Well I hated it.

On a switch leap.

Here’s the thing, Simone’s calf muscle cursed the whole rest of the competition, and we need to grapple with that.

13.133 for Flavia.

Andrade – BB – Brazil – switch mount – switch to switch 1/2 to split jump, solid – bhs loso, secure – aerial to split ring jump to bhs, gets the series – switch ring, solid landing – side aerial, step back – double pike, hop back. Good.

14.500 is into 3rd on beam. Knocks Wevers out of the beam final.

Brazil needs a bit over a 41 on floor to qualify in 2nd as a team.

Rotation 4

Soares – FX – double arabian, cannonablls it to a stick, good foot positions – FTDT, just a tad forward – switch ring to split leap full – split jump full – doubel tuck, little shuffle – wolf triple – double pike, more form there, lunge back. 13.500

Barbosa – FX – whip to FTDT, under control landing – piked full in, short with a lunge forward – switch to switch side 1/2 – back 1.5 to front full, hop, keeps it in bounds – wolf double – popa – double pike, chest down, hop back. Also 13.500 for her.

I liked the part where we didn’t even show the most essential bars routine from Derwael. But she scores 14.733 to get into the bars final, knocking out Biles.

Saraiva – FX – whip FTDT, chest down and a step – switch full, around – double tuck, large bounce back OOB – split leap 1.5, also around enough – back 1.5 to front full, step forward – switch ring 1/2 and you don’t even hate it – double pike, step back. 13.166. I reject. No way that E score should be lower than Barbosa’s.

No individual event finals for Saraiva.

Andrade – FX – front full to FTDT, awkward bounce back but keeps it in bounds – DLO 1/1, another large bounce back – split leap 1.5, around, some control – double y into stag, may have dropped a little early – DLO, hop forward – switch 1/1 – double pike, holds the landing. Well she didn’t not go for it. 13.900 due to Andrade. Into the floor final in 2nd.

We’ll have 9 qualifiers for floor with Kishi and Barbosu in an unbroken tie.

Brazil qualifies in 4th, 4 tenths separating 2-4.

Australia will end up 10th as Romania advances to the team final.

  1. Omgosh–crying for 🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴! They were freaking great on beam! yes! Voinea looked fabulous. Voinea!! WOW!

  2. OMG!!!!!! Becky Downie! that was so stressful and beautiful to watch. me probably waking up neighbors screaming! omg. Voinea again looked fabulous–some serious muscles saving that punch front . AND SpENCEr!!! thank you! you’re amazing!

  3. Ana Barbosu just did a hitchkick in her floor routine. Not since 1976 have we seen that in Olympics. I can wait another 48 years for the next one….

    1. hahah–right? she did something else that was gen x gym class-y gymnastics skill before that; however, that hitchkick erased my memory of anything that happened prior. lol

  4. What was that awful camera shot of Barbosu before her second vault – very creepy that the camera zoomed in on her feet and then went up her legs … just NO.

  5. Can we petition to allow Romania to compete as a 3 event specialist team? 😭😭😭

    1. It really stinks for Jordan, because she totally rocked all of her routines. Hopefully she’ll make an event final so she really gets the chance to shine. But I’m so happy for Suni because she had to go through so much to get here.

  6. Bummed didn’t get to see ANY other routines than USA. Ya know, just for comparison…

    1. There are 2 different feeds…watched the USA feed on tv and the international feed on my phone. Saw lots of routines that weren’t the US.

  7. Simone stung her ankle during her FX warmup. Hopefully it’s nothing major and she’ll be good for team finals. I don’t think she’ll let anything stop her, but I want to see her perform at her best. That YDP though… wow.

  8. I’m SO glad Jade was able to rebound for vault!! I felt so sad for her after floor BUT, thank goodness if that was going to happen, that it wasn’t team finals, b/c that would’ve been a nightmare!!!! Spencer – will they have Jade compete floor in finals?! I’d almost say just have her vault only and have Suni do floor?? Do we know what order they’ll be competing on Tuesday?

  9. What does everyone think of Romania’s chances of qualifying to the TF?! i think they can absolutely snag that 8th spot!

    1. Well, they made it, with the fourth-highest score on floor and the lowest total of any team on any event on bars. 🙂

  10. Can we please replace this A$$Hat that is commentating with Laurie?? He’s just the worst!!!!

  11. What did this man just say? Sanna Veerman’s rival is Aly Raisman? WTH does that mean???

  12. Japan won’t be able to go to team finals despite their score right? They only have 4 people.

    1. Lauroe said that, too. I was so confused by that. i had no idea that was a rule. Why didnt they use a reserve athlete? anyway, this team has been my fave to watch so far!

    2. Where are you getting that from? The FIG article about subdivision 3 actually has “Japan leap up the rankings” as part of the title. It would seem odd for them to highlight that if Japan can’t make team finals due to only having 4 athletes. It also specifically mentioned that they were in a position for a “possible team final appearance”.

The FIG does plenty of illogical things, but not allowing a team to compete in the finals because they don’t have 5 athletes in a situation where they technically only need 3 athletes would definitely take the cake. It also doesn’t fit with past practice. In Rio the Ukrainian men didn’t even put up 3 athletes per event in the team final. That was partially because they were prioritizing the individual events, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t have more than 3 healthy athletes at that point, either.

      1. That’s what was said on the broadcast that Japan cannot advance to team finals. Maybe they were wrong?

  13. Subdivision 3 has been my favorite so far! Between Levi’s incredible foot form, the NCAA stars, and Japan, this has been awesome! i love this Japanese team so much! what an absolute joy to watch. IMHO, theyre winning the olympics for artistry. and leos, obviously–they always win leo design. Theyre very patient with their gymnastics and i appreciate that so much. no anxiety watching them at all.

  14. Pinoy Power! Congratulations to Aleeah, Emma and Levi on fulfilling their Olympic dreams.

Luisa looked lovely and consistent as always. Alabama 9.925 classic Spencer, Roll Tide.

I can’t wait to see Levi’s Y1.5 in the Cardinal lineup.

  15. Is it me or is not one having a good day? Except Jordan Chiles who rocked it? Simone is limping, Jade is ill, Melanie is having a day….Can we have an exorcism or something?

  16. Is anyone else having issues with the score site? It hasn’t loaded for me for the last 20 minutes. Any other places I could see scores?

    1. Same here… a hack was threatened, did it actually happen? No live scores, PC Internet down in France (at least in my area)….

  17. My PC internet connection failed at 5.30 pm French time in France, just before rotation 4!!!!!! Nightmare. Should be back tomorrow by end of day!!!! I’m doing what I can on the phone but bad………

    1. The only French gymnast we’ll see in the finals is Nemour, and she’s not representing France. Talk about a slap in the face for the French federation.

  18. Jade has been feeling sick for a minute, since podium training when she balked her last pass. Why wouldnt they change her routine around to accommodate her level of readiness?

  19. This is where the NBC arrows realy fall apart, because that’s a nice score for her composition.

Spencer, don’t give NBC ideas to go back to doing the triangles by E score! The point is how competitive the score is, anyone can just look at the E score to know how well-performed the routine was.

  20. Hi Spencer, not to make unsolicited demands but you should gif the look Simone gives someone at 1:09:17 on the UB stream. Idk if you can even make gifs from these streams. It’s one of her great “why the fuck are you talking” faces. Either way ty for liveblogging and everything.

  21. Rebe’s “resting upgrade face” wins you a gold medal for commentary, Spencer. 🏅

  22. Jesus christ,i sure as hell hope someone in charge puts a stop to thoss camera people being that f-ing close. Andrade was having trouble moving to where she needed to go and had to put her gripped hands up lile,”hey, i need to move!”9

  23. NBC with these camera angles — this bar angle stinks . can’t tell what’s happening half the time, and the tumbling straight into the corner camera really only works for getting some landing butt shots. get it together NBC. One side camera for bars. one overview for floor ,this getting fancy is not good for us gym nerds.

  24. Spencer, you are absolutely amazing as always!! Thank you so much for your awesome coverage and Witty comments!! I want Jade to win a vault medal so badly and How amazing would it be for Jordan to win a floor medal?!

  25. I’m about sick of athletes that “are sick” but don’t pull out when there are teammates WAITING to go in at 100%. Either shut up about it or move aside.

Also, I will be surprised if they put Hezly up on anything in TF, that beam was ragged. Who knows though, she might have to step up for Jade pulling out. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Jade’s magically better during Team Final.

If this seems familiar, then you’re paying attention.

    1. You do realize the rules did not allow Simone to be replaced by an alternate between qualifications and TF in Tokyo, right?

  26. Spencer, I truly hope your recovery is progressing. It was great to see your live comments!

  27. Jade being sick and possibly getting everyone else sick is a valid discussion. No one had a vendetta against her. Some of us are just sick of the over scoring, and free passes she gets, over and over again. Like when she told Simone, Morgan called her a bitch. And when she was talking about others to Simone and it was caught on video. Her fanatical fans have this blind, following when it comes to her. Some of you need to find therapists.
