2024 Olympics – Event Finals Day 1 Live Blog

Because the Olympics are like, “ooohhhoohhhohhh,” event finals are divided over three days instead of two, with just three events held today: men’s floor, women’s vault, and pommel horse.

Men’s Floor

Zapata – FX – back 2.5 to double front, solid – back 1.5 to double front pike, deep landing but controlled – double double layout, small hop forward, solid – front 2/1 to front lay, stuck excellent – double araian 1/2 out, great stick – DLO, lands a tad short, small hop forward, in bounds?

Opening with a long score wait. Funnnnnn. Wondering if they’ll say the second double pike was tucked. “Que pasa? Dios mio!” Same.

14.333

Dolgopyat – FX – double double layout, little hop – front full to double front pike, hop forward – back 2.5 to double front, hop – front 2/1 to layout, smooth, little hop – double double, chest down, a couple small foot adjustments – FTDT last pass, little movement. Much better than Q.

14.966 would have tied for the win in qualification.

Yulo – FX – back 2.5 to front pike, little hop – front 2/1 to double front, hop – DLO 1/1, lovely, stuck landing – 3/1, a little under with a hop – front full to randi, little hop – 3.5 dismount is awesome, stuck.

15.000! Into first.

Zhang – FX – front 2/1 to double front pike, bounce forward OOB with both feet – back 3.5 to 1/2 is hit today with a hop – randi, little hop forward – 2/1, stuck nicely – back 1.5 to front lay, hop – 3.1, hop back.

13.933 and into 4th.

Karimi – FX – side pass randi, bounce back – front full to double front pike, slide back – back 2.5 to double front, nice stick – double double, step back – 2/1, stuck – front 2/1 to kick out 1/2 – 3/1, a little short, step. He did his good one in an Olympic final, which is nice to see.

14.500 and into 3rd for the moment.

Jarman – FX – triple double lay, bounce back, nearly OOB, saves it – back 2.5 to double front, hop – triple double, little bounce – 3/1, little hop – front full to randi, a bit under – 3.5, little hop. A good one with all the D but hoppy on everything.

14.933 is into 3rd place, all current medalists within a tenth.

Kovtun – FX – front full to double front, nice form, little hop – front 3/1, deeper today with step forward – 3.5, very nice stick – randi, bounce back – back 2.5 to front lay, high, finds stick – 3/1, chest down, little hop.

14.533 and into 4th

Whitehouse – FX – triple back is hit, little hop back – front 2/1 to double front, really deep landing but stuck it – double front pike, little hop – 2/1, stuck – double double tuck, great stick – back 2.5 to front lay, little hop – 3/1, little bounce. That was excellent.

14.466 comes in for Whitehouse with just 6.3 D score.

GOLD – Yulo
SILVER – Dolgopyat
BRONZE – Jarman

To the intros for the women’s vault final.

Georgieva – VT 1 – DTY is solid, good distance, surprised herself a little on landing with a larger bounce back. 14.100

Georgieva – VT 2 – Tsuk 1.5 is well landing, only a small hop, only a bit of knees. 13.866

13.983 average, about right on qualification.

An – VT 1 – starts with a solidly landed DTY, just a step-salute – some knees and pike and direction. 14.066

An – VT 2 – Cheng is around alive, hop back – lots of knees and not the most amplitude, deepish landing, only a small slide. 14.366

14.216 average and into first.

Olsen – VT 1 – Cheng is around alive, but lands shorter than her usual today, chest down and a hop forward – direction, leg form

Olsen – VT 2 – DTY doesn’t get any kind of block and vaults it to her knees. She can land that vault even with zero amplitude, so you know it was a really rough block. Yeah, really high on the table, and then her hand totally slipped.

Ellie’s like, GOOOD JOBBBBBBB

13.366 average and into 3rd.

Biles – VT 1 – YDP, good one, bounce back, more control than her last one. Very solid. Little bit of direction. 15.700, evaluated a little harsher than earlier in the event for me, though did get the .1 for the OOB.

Biles – VT 2 – Cheng, solid hit, bounce up in place, good distance, also controls the landing pretty well. 14.900

15.300 average.

Black – VT 1 – handspring layout full is good, very small slide back and some knees and pike, solid landing. 14.100

Black – VT 2 – Tsuk 1.5 is also solid in the air, larger lunge forward. 13.766

13.933 average.

Ellie and Shallon chant “we love gymnastics” in unison, which is something that has happened.

Andrade – VT 1 – Cheng is glorious, almost stuck, little movement salute – great in the air. 15.100

Andrade – VT 2 – Amanar, doesn’t go for the triple, but lands the Amanar solidly – a little short, a little shuffle. 14.833

14.966 average and into 2nd obviously.

Yeo – VT 1 – just barely gets the rudi to her feet, short landing with a large lunge forward – don’t think the knee went down, but only just – maybeee? 14.166

Yeo VT 2 – DTY is also a struggle, landed it but then short and goes to hands and knees – definitely not 100% with those vaults

13.416 average.

Carey – VT 1 – Cheng, lands it – little hop back – leg separation on the block and some knees. 14.733 is big. Definitely doesn’t need the Amanar to medal.

Carey – VT 2 – She has posted the Amanar – only does the DTY, which is the right choice, and it’s excellent – small hop back, good height, direction, chest position. 14.200

14.466 average and a bronze medal.

GOLD – Biles
SILVER – Andrade
BRONZE – Carey

  1. I love that Jade is going last! I hope so so much that she and Stephen earn medals today!!!

  2. The floor podium was amazing!!! I’m hoping for Simone, Rebecca, and Jade on vault and of course Stephen!!!

  3. LMAO Ellie Black walking past each gymnast embracing until she gets to the North Korean gymnast. Cold as Ice….

  4. Ok can we now shut up about the Triple Yurchenko… I knew she was never going to do it. She is still awesome. Still only one gymnast has ever attempted. No ONE ELSE.

    1. She is fabulously awesome and I TOTALLY agree. sick of the bullshit hype–she was never gonna do it.

  5. “The bronze medalists holds the phone for the medalist selfie. This is what we have learned from the ceremonies at this Olympics.”
    Spencer, you are a god.

  6. I am on a flight that has been delayed for 15 hours- finally got wifi- your pommel description brought me back to life- laughed out loud.

  7. Only thing to add to Spencer’s description might be the occasional pitti-pat pitti-pat of hands on horse

    1. lighten up francis; we’re all here for grins and entertainment. for dry coverage there are Jschool sports reporters or best yet, the gymter.net! best of both worlds

  8. Spencer, I haven’t seen your podcast yet, but I do hope you guys take a moment and recognize Brody Malone. I know he’s not liked because of his (alleged) support for Trump, but that dude has been a total class act these entire Olympics.

He was supposed to be one of the faces of these games, but ends up with crushing disappointment during the qualification rounds

What does he do? Bounces back and wins a bronze with a team. He even takes it further by coaching and cheering on his teammates during the individual finals. It’s especially admirable that he coached Fred (I believe) during the all around, which he was tipped to lead. And don’t get me started on Stephen during Pommel Horse!

Anyway, I don’t know how many people will agree with me, but I think it’s worth bringing up
