That’s Our History

Consecutive 10s in College Gymnastics

Jordan Chiles etc. This was originally intended as a placeholder note to myself, but I also feel like it exactly encapsulates all necessary introduction to this. Jordan Chiles etc.

Chiles has scored 10.000 on floor at the last 4 consecutive meets. (And counting? Too much pressure? Immediate OOB?) With a 10.000 on vault from the meet prior to the start of her floor streak, Chiles has scored a 10.000 on at least one apparatus at 5 consecutive meets.

So, how does that compare to the all time record?

I’m glad you asked, realistic question asker!

The current record for most consecutive 10.000s on a single apparatus is shared by Jeanette Antolin and Jamie Dantzscher on either 6 or 7, depending on how strict you care to be. More specifically, whether you count a rest meet in between as a continuation of the streak.

In 2002, Jamie Dantzscher scored 6 consecutive 10.000s on floor from January 18th to February 23rd. Up next was a two-meet weekend, and Dantzscher rested on floor at the Friday meet (competing only bars and beam), and then came back to floor for the Sunday meet and scored another 10.000. So, she had 7 consecutive floor appearances with a 10.000, going 10-10-10-10-10-10-REST-10.

Two years later, Jeanette Antolin did almost the identical thing on vault, but flipped. She started with a 10.000 on February 13th, then didn’t compete vault at the Friday meet of a two-meet weekend (doing only floor), then came back to vault starting that Sunday and scored 6 consecutive 10s. So again, 7 straight vault appearances with a 10, going 10-REST-10-10-10-10-10-10.

A couple other people have come close. That same year in 2004, North Carolina’s Courtney Bumpers scored 5 consecutive 10.000s on floor in a streak that started the very same day as Antolin’s. Bumpers’ streak of 5 was broken on March 13th with a 9.400 on floor before she came back the next week at conference championships with another 10.000.

Trinity Thomas had a streak of 5 consecutive 10.000 routines on floor with a break in between, just that her break happened to be 9 months long. Thomas finished the 2022 season with 4 straight 10.000s, then scored another 10.000 in her first floor routine of the 2023 season (Florida’s second meet). When she scored a 9.950 at the next meet, that was her lowest floor score in an entire year.

Moving on to the 4-In-A-Row Club that Jordan Chiles has now joined, most recently Ragan Smith scored four 10.000s in a row on beam in 2024. Several gymnasts in the 90s also had streaks of 4, with Michigan’s Nikki Peters and Georgia’s Leah Brown doing it in 1997 on bars and vault respectively. Michigan’s Beth Wymer did it on bars in 1995, and Kentucky’s Jenny Hansen definitely had at least 4 in a row on vault in 1994, though the dates on a couple of her 10s remain fuzzy. Because we don’t have full meet scores for some teams from the 90s, those gymnasts may have had a rest meet in between like Dantzscher and Antolin where it looks like they missed out on scoring a 10.000 but perhaps didn’t compete that event at all that day. We don’t know. Because by 90s, I mean the 1890s apparently.

As for Chiles’ streak of 5 consecutive meets scoring a 10.000 on any apparatus, that brings us back to UCLA and Kyla Ross, who holds the college record for most consecutive meets with a 10.000 at 10, which she accomplished in 2019.

February 2 @ Oregon State – Bars
February 10 @ Washington – Vault
February 16 v Arizona – Vault
February 23 @ Utah – Bars
March 3 @ Oklahoma – Bars
March 10 v Stanford – Beam
March 16 v Utah State – Floor
March 23 @ Pac-12s – Floor
April 5 @ Regional SF – Vault
April 6 @ Regional Final – Bars & Beam

Ross never scored more than 2 in a row on any single apparatus but got 10.000s on all of the events at least twice during that streak in 2019.

The meet before Dantzscher started her run of floor 10s, she got a 10.000 on vault, so she owns a streak of 7 consecutive meets, as does Leah Brown, who finished her career in 1997 with 7 straight meets with a 10.000 across vault and floor.

Antolin has her streak of 6 competitions, as does Thomas, as well as Georgia’s Hope Spivey (vault and floor) and Kim Arnold (vault and floor).

We’ll soon see if this club is also accepting new members.
