Today’s action will start with LSU/Kentucky in an early slot, followed by the Auburn/Florida showdown—the meet that last year provoked a tie at 198.575. It’s probably a little early in the year for 198.5s, but you never know. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Sprinkled in there will be the Michigan tri meet and Georgia’s visit to Missouri, so I’ll try to keep an eye on some key Denver and Michigan routines as well.

Following Auburn/Florida, I’ll be divorced, beheaded, live on GymCastic for the members’ aftershow to talk about who got a 9.850 for a fall, I assume.

As for LSU and Kentucky, we have two teams that will feel various degrees of “why is there a 6 next to our 19” about their first-meet performances and will be hoping to join the club with some better bars scores at this one. Bars was the weak score for both in their season openers with people like Shchennikova and Worley stuck in the 9.7s.

“The Florida Gators were the team champs in 2022” is misleading. There are places besides the SEC.

John and Alicia on the call.

Rotation 1

LaClair – VT – UK – solid height on yfull, loses her leg position at the end, bounce back. 9.850 very high start. Possible scoring error? Seems like…obviously wrong. Yeah, they have one judge on 9.950 there, which can’t be right.

And now we have a delay. Fun! Jay and Tim talking.

Johnson – UB – LSU – maloney to bail, hit – strong cast hs on high – toe on – DLO, holds landing. Very clean, improvement on last week. 9.900

Procasky – VT – UK – similar yfull to LaClair – also some legs at the end, only a small pike at the beginning, shuffle back. 9.800

Arenas – UB – LSU – good amplitude on tkatchev, connets to pak with a leg break – a bit short on final cast hs – DLO, small movement, leg separation. 9.825

Wilson – VT – UK – strong handspring pike 1/2 – medium bounce back. Chest up. 9.825

Jeffrey – UB – LSU – “A UCLA transfer” and that’s the end of the story – good first hs – maloney to pak isclean, small leg break on pak – cast 1/2 on low – short final hs with some body position – good high FTDT, stuck with a little absorbing. 9.900 is high, Johnson’s was better.

Patterson – VT – UK – handspring pike 1/2 – she gets the stick on it, very nice, one of her best ones – not the biggest dynamics, possible height and distance to take, but great landing. 9.900

Finnegan – UB – LSU – good first hs – piked deltchev, excellent – solid hs – toe on to bail, good vertical, maybe some loose back position – strong hs on high – double arabian, stuck. Nice. Better than Jeffrey, so we’ll see where is left to go. 9.900. Everything is 9.9.

Magnelli – VT – UK – handspring pike 1/2, she sticks the landing as well, very good, chest up more than Patterson’s, some foot form. Some position on block. 9.925

Shchennikova – UB – LSU – shortish first hs – Rauy to pak, good pak, high Ray, some feet – 1/2 turn on low, a bit late – better cast hs on high this week – usual DLO, but struggles on the landing as well this time, chest down, two small steps.

Worley – VT – UK – his her Y1.5 – medium hop forward and some knees, solid. 9.850

Judges conference about Shchennikova. One judge watched the dismount and one didn’t?

9.675 Shchennikova

Original judge split on Shchennikova was 9.600 and 9.850, which means they have to conference because it’s a separation larger than .2.

The 9.850 judge went down to 9.750 so they could be in range. With two steps forward on the DLO, plus the chest on landing and the body position in the air, you can’t go 9.850 on that routine.

Bryant – UB – LSU – good first hs – blind to jaeger, high, the hip position in her jaeger is a little tight, but that’s not super a thing – solid hs – bail is clean – hits cast hs on high – blind to double front 1/2 out, stuck. Very strong.

They fixed LaClair’s vault score, so that’s now 9.775 and is the drop number. Kentucky on 49.300 on vault with some of their strongest handspring pike 1/2s.

Bryant goes 9.950 to bring LSU up to 49.475 on bars, which is a big improvement. A combination of lighter scoring and much better cast handstands and dismount landings compared to last weekend.

After 1:
LSU – 49.475
Kentucky – 49.300

Rotation 2:

Arenas – VT – LSU – another good yfull from her, smaller hop back. 9.800

Davis – UB – UK – good first hs – blind to jaeger, good height, some feet – small arch in hs – bail, good feet – rushes final cast hs a little – DLO, nice stick, closed-ish position but in the good way, not the piked way. 9.875

Shchennikova – VT – LSU – lands short on her Y1.5 today and sits it down. She heard us talking about her bars scores and was like SHUTTT UPPPP, damn it I have to vault.

Bunn – UB – UK – blind, hit – jaeger, some feet and knees, solid hit – good toe point on bail as well – final hs looked solid – DLO, low but gets the landing, step salute. 9.825

KJ Johnson – VT – LSU – great amplitude on yfull and good direction this week – medium hop back. 9.875

Reigert – UB – UK – blind to jaeger, slightly close on catch but fine – toe on, a bit of elbows into a nice high bail – DLO, too piked on that one, chest forward with a step.

Finnegan – VT – LSU – Omelianchik a little shorter than last week but hit, step back. Allegedly they have to take .100 for short and .100 for step, but we’ll see.

9.750 for that vault, which is a correct and accurate score, but it looks stupid compared to the others because it’s a prettier and better vault than most of those 9.8s. Let’s bring that same energy to Yfulls now.

DeGuzman – UB – UK – blind to jaeger to overshoot, nice jaeger toe position compared to the others – a bit short on cast hs on high – DLO, some legs, basically finds the landing, a little movement. 9.900

Kiya Johnson – VT – LSU – nearrrrly sticks her DTY, small step forward. 9.875

Luksik – UB – UK – Ray, hit – toe on to bail, solid height, can’t tell vertical from our direction but maybe something there – a bit short on cast hs – finds stick on her DLO. 9.925. Bars…not going to be a “trouble spot” with this scoring.

Bryant – VT – LSU – handspring pike 1/2 – medium hop back, the rest her usual. 9.900.

Compared to the Kentucky handspring pike 1/2s, we see the tiring supremacy of the stuck landing.

Tim Garrison pointing at something in the crowd, John telling us about flash photography. YES EJECT THEM.

Worley – UB – UK – clear hip to tkatchev, hit, just varely loses her feet at the end – pak, good toes, very small leg break – 1/2 turn on low is nice – solid vertical on final cast hs – FTDT, bounce back. 9.800

Kentucky goes 49.325 on bars, LSU 49.200 on vault. Kentucky closes the gap in the second rotation.

After 2:
LSU – 98.675
Kentucky – 98.625

Between the pre-bars delay and that crowd-pointing delay and some of these scores (both real and later corrected) we’ve been through it in the first two rotations here.

Tim and Jay both have real “dads after a few beers at the country club fundraiser” energy. They are going to OUTBID each other for that yacht cruise.

Rotation 3

Luksik – BB – Kentucky – onodi, solid amplitude – bhs loso, clean position, secure landing – cat leap to switch 1/2, very short of split position – beat – gainer pike, a little short, step back. 9.750

Ballard – FX – LSU – DLO, solid control, keeps front foot down – back 1.5 to layout to stag, a bit low on the later elements as that series progressed – switch ring to switch 1/2, a little under – double pike, holds the landing, looked chest forward. 9.850

Procasky – BB – Kentucky – bhs loso, good lift on loso, clean work – cat leap to switch ring, break, turn to the side and a swim, under ring position there – nice amplitude on cat though – aerial to beat jump, pretty –  double stag, check before beat jump, no combination credit there – gainer pike, small slide back. Things to take, but I also appreciated her attention to amplitude on the simpler elements like the cat and the beat jump that for most people have negative lift.

9.575 with a 9.700/9.450 split, so we’re going to need to have another conference. And we have both judges changing their scores (now 9.650/9.500) which keeps the score at 9.575.

Shchennikova – FX – LSU – front 2/1, a bit of a crossover step – back 1.5 to front lay, good lift in second element there – switch to switch ring 1/2, some lack of control on landing – rudi to split jump, good rudi, a bit too much travel. 9.850

Bunn – BB – Kentucky – full turn, good – bhs loso loso, right on – switch, back leg low, connects to a solid split – 2/1 dismount, step to the side, chest forward. 9.850

KJ Johnson – FX – LSU – open full in, controls step back – back 1.5 to front lay, good height, slight rebound – switch side to popa, shows clear split positions – double tuck – a bit of a “I just stepped on fire” hesitation step forward – 9.850

Patterson – BB – Kentucky – bhs loso series, hit, good height – aerial, hit into split jump, a bit low – switch to switch combination, really nice positions – gainer pike, stuck. Nice one. 9.925

Finnegan – FX – LSU – double arabian short today, similar to her Omel, under with a step back – 2.5 to front tuck, awkward punch, large lunge forward – switch ring to split leap full, hit – 1.5 to layout, also looked mistimed, very low layout, deep squat landing. Will need to drop that. 9.500

Michigan is underway, Guggino large lunge sideward on her Y1.5 on vault. Wojcik nearly sticks, lean forward college stick. Wilson really sticks with some direction.

Worley – BB – Kentucky – cat leap, lower amplitude, to a solid switch side – aerial to bhs loso, right on – full turn, hit – 1.5 dismount, holds the stick with a lean forward. 9.950, OK here we go.

Bryant – FX – LSU – stuck double front, excellent – front lay to rudi, chest a bit forward with an adjustment step – front 2/1, slide forward, a bit out of control, some leg form in the air. 9.775

Michigan got three 9.950s on vault, some of which were stuck. 49.650 for Michigan. So that happened. Brooks vault was the highlight for me. Identical to last week for 9.950 again.

Magnelli – BB – Kentucky – bhs loso loso, very solid – switch to straddle 1/4, good amplitude – aerial, a bit low, arm wave correction – gainer pike, stuck. Nice. 9.850

Kiya Johnson – FX – LSU – full in, excellent control – back 1.5 to front lay, elegant layout position, good landing control – big amplitude on leaps – NOOOOOOOOOOO double pike and she’s down and injured. She’s being carried off by the coaches.Super deep landing and then just collapsed to the side.

Meanwhile Denver goes 49.300 on bars, dropping Hutchinson going over the wrong way on a handstand, compared to Michigan’s 49.650. 9.900 for Mundell and Brown. Fisk is dealing with a couple 8s on floor thus far.

Kentucky goes 49.325 on beam, while LSU will be on 48.825 on floor after counting the Finnegan 9.500. Also everything is terrible.

The scores are telling me that Georgia went 49.475 on bars. I didn’t see it, so….

Meanwhile vault scoring at that meet is like, “And a zero for you…” which I enjoy

After 3:
Kentucky 147.950
LSU 147.500

Rotation 4

Rivers – BB – LSU – bhs loso, solid – switch 1/2, secure, perhaps a bit under but we couldn’t tell from this angle – switch to straddle 1/4, better 180 position on the straddle – 2/1, holds the stick but does so with a chest lean and an arm wave. 9.850

Procasky – FX – UK – front lay to front full, not the highest but secure landing – switch ring to split leap full is nicely done – double tuck, good landing again.

Wilson – BB – LSU – bhs loso, hit – switch to straddle 1/4, arm wave correction – aerial, hit – goes into dismount combo and is off line – YEOUCH, looked like she might have clipped her face as she came off the beam, off line on her bhs combination. She’s being ushered off the floor under her own power. 8.600

I would ask “LSU are you OK” but the answer is definitely no.

Nice to see Soraya Hawthorne back on vault for Georgia – large bounce back on yfull.

LaClair – FX – Kentucky – double pike, clean body positions, controls step – switch side to popa to wolf full, gets a bit out of coutnrol on the wolf full – front lay to front full is solid – rudi is very very short, hands down. 9.125

Cutting to Abby Heiskell’s intro video in the middle of Lynnzee Brown’s beam is a Geneva Conventions violation I think. Very pretty hit from Heiskell.

We haven’t heard what the plan is for starting Florida/Auburn yet. This one is going to run way over because of the EVERYTHING.

KJ Johnson – BB – LSU – reverse planche mount – swtich, small pause before straddle 1/4, which is solid – bhs loso series, right on – side aerial, foot placement to save it, into very low sissone, and then a couple small leans, good save really – full turn – bhs layout 1.5, step back. Through a hit. 9.575 that will count.

Magnelli – FX – Kentucky – rudi to a clean loso, nice – switch side to popa, solid positions, just a little overturned – double pike, slide back

Auburn/Florida is underway on ESPNNEWS.

Edwards – VT – Florida – good distance on yfull but a giant bounce back, should be a .2 landing deduction and then additional steps and execution deductions. Or a 9.775 final score. Whatever. Cool.

Sabados – UB – Auburn – Ray is solid – toe on to bail, a bit of legs in the air, gets to vertical – short cast hs on high – DLO, somewhat whippy, bounce back. 9.800

Richards – VT – Florida – Y1.5, short with a lunge back – 9.725

Bryant underway on beam for LSU – hits aerial to bhs – switch to straddle 1/2, pretty – full turn, no trouble – frotn tuck, solid work – good secure landing on rudi dismount, nice.

Hollingsworth – UB – Auburn – toe on to maloney to bail – solid vertical position – FTDT, bounce back.

And during that, Wojcik just went 9.975 on bars again. 49.525 on bars. Well over 198 pace.

Wong – VT – Florida – ro 1/2 on pike 1/2, bounce back, a bit better control than last week but still a pretty large bounce.

Groth – UB – Auburn – hits tkatchev, legs together on pak, not the highest but fine – solid 1/2 turn position on low – giant full, slight hesitation, a bit late – but hits the connected double tuck, stuck.

Patterson on floor for Kentucky, chest well forward on final pass with a lunge forward.

Thomas – VT – Florida – didn’t get quite her usual block, but fine, just a little short on landing with a small hop back.

Start value conference on Bryant’s beam score. And it’s in as 9.950.

Finnegan – BB – LSU – bhs loso loso, wobble, bend at the hips, pulls it back – aerial, small lean – hainer full, fairly large crossover step back. 9.775

Stevens – UB – Auburn – tkatchev, a ltitle close – bail, good vertical position – DLO, some pike down, stuck landing –

DiCello – VT – Florida – she brings out her Y1.5 this week, simialr to Richards, it’s short with a lunge back.

9.900 for DiCello is mathematically impossible if that’s her real score. .1 step, .1 short at minimum.

Davis – FX – Kentucky – double pike, chest a bit forward, covers to present – 1.5 to layout, clean body position – double tuck, controls the step back. 9.925

Gobourne – UB – Auburn – tkatchev to a pretty pak – 1/2 turn on low, a bit rushed – some angle in hs position on high – FTDT, deep landing, hop forward. 9.875

Lee – UB – Auburn – blind to jaeger to pak to maloney to gienger, and it’s perfect – good cast hs after – giant full to double tuck, bounce back. Wonderful until dismount landing.

Arenas – BB – LSU – in the lineup for Kiya Johnson – switch tos plit is hit, some back leg – bhs loso series, secure landing, some knees in bhs – kickover, solid – switch 1/2, a bit under split but solidly landed again – 1.5 stuck landing. Really confident routine coming into the lineup. 9.925

So it’s 49.250 on bars for Auburn to 49.200 on vault for Florida. Florida had some short landings on Y1.5s, and I still can’t get past that 9.900 for DiCello.

Worley – FX – Kentucky – FTDT, chest up, controls the step, good – switch ring to switch side, solid – front full to front lay, clean, legs together on layout – double tuck, also under control, chest up. Good finish. 9.925

LSU finished on 196.750, which is actually a pretty solid number for what an injury apocalypse this meet ended up being for them.

Kentucky wins, breaking into the desired 197 zone with 197.125.

Well that meet was 18 lives.

Michigan is well over 198 pace through 2 events but now has to go to beam, which was the problem last week.

Bauman – BB – Michigan – hits full turn – bhs loso, arm wave correction – cat leap to switch 1/2, not bad on position, beat jump – side somi, nice straight leg – gainer pike, holds the landing. Good.

Rotation 2:

Hollingsworth – VT – Auburn – medium bounce back on yfull –

Richards – UB – Florida – maloney, legs apart into bail, small amount of leg crossing, good vertical – DLO, finds the stick, leg separation and foot flexing. 9.825

Groth – VT – Auburn – finds the landing on her yfull, somewhat crunched on the table, not the most amplitude, small movement on landing. 9.800

Blakely – UB – Florida – maloney to pak, clean legs on pak – 1/2 turn on low bar is solid – a bit rush on hs – toe 1/2 – double front large lunge forward. 9.775

Wilson hits her double back beam dismount for Michigan in the second spot, lunge back.

Hubbard – VT – Auburn – Y1.5 – medium hop forward and some knees. 9.775

Nguyen – UB – Florida – good hs – maloney to pak, small leg breaks but they won’t take for it – hesitation pak catch – clean hs on high – DLO, pretty but deepish, slide back. 9.800

Stevens – VT – Auburn – also has a hop forward on her y1.5 and some knees and direction, good distance. 9.850

DiCello – UB – Florida – good first hs – Ray, solid – pak to toe on to van leeuwen, legs together well – nice hs position on high – FTDT, holds the landing. Very nice.

Brooks on beam for Michigan, small check on loso loso series – switch and beat is nice – bhs 2/1 dismount, bounce back

Lee – VT – Auburn – ro 1/2 on tuck 1/2, small slide back. This is a good choice for her in ncaa. She could get 10s for this.

Thomas – UB – Florida – maloney, good height to pak, clean – toe on to van leeuwen, legs together – good hs on high – DLO, wonderful stick. Watch out.

Gobourne – VT – Auburn – beautiful Y1.5 in the air, fairly large bounce forward and then a step to salute. Still goes 9.900

Thomas goes 9.975.

Wong – UB – Florida – maloney to pak, clean – van leeuwen, clean – good hs on high – DLO, holds the stick with a little hip lean. Some more hip position things on this one than on Thomas’s.

And Wong gets a 10.000. That’s some lineup order because Thomas’s was better.

Wojcikl anchoring beam for Michigan – lovely switch position – bhs bhs loso series, nice – 1.5 dismount, stuck. Pretty. 9.950

What do you have to do to win this meet? Graba: “Obviously score about five more 10s.” That’s the sass monster I was looking for.

After 2: Florida 98.725, Auburn 98.475

Michigan goes 49.375 on beam, still on pace for a 198 with a normal floor. Denver 49.175 on floor, probably on track for a high 196.

Rotation 3

Hurd – BB – Florida – not the in bars lineup today but is on beam – aerial to bhs, clean work, good speed – split jump to split ring jump, wonderful positions, leans at the hips on that one – full turn, another check – 2/1 dismount, small bounce back. Beautiful execution, just tentative wobbles still. 9.725 Actually thought this one was better than last week.

McLaughlin – FX – Auburn – back 1.5 to layout, low on the layout – split leap full to wolf jump full, leg a little low on wolf – split leap 1.5, pulls it around – double pike, a bit deep with a step back. 9.800

Blakely – BB – Florida – aerial to bhs, connected – switch to switch 1/2, good height, loses some feet position in the switch 1/2 – gainer full, bounce back. 9.875

Hollingsworth – FX – Auburn – open FTDT, just a bit lack of control – switch 1/2 to popa, good height and clear position on popa – front tuck through to double tuck, a bit forward.

Lazzari – BB – Florida – bhs loso loso, check, lean at the hips – switch to split, nice on the split positions – aerial, lovely – bhs 1.5 dismount, small hop back.

Casali on vault for Denver just got 9.975 for her stuck Y1.5 – great landing, just a little soft in body position.

Brusch – FX – Auburn – double tuck, and an intense balance check to stay in bounds, which she did, but lots of arm waving – great amplitude on dance element combination – double pike, short, step forward. 9.725

Denver sets a program record on vault with 49.550 and ends up going over 197.

DiCello – BB – Florida – candle mount is hit – hits double wolf turn – switch to split, solidly done – bhs loso, right on – aerial, hit – bha gainer full, little rebound. 9.925

Stevens – FX – Auburn – front lay to rudi, under control, some knees – split full to wolf full, hit, a little under on wolf – double tuck, very solid landing – 9.900

Wong – BB – Florida – switch to split leap, lovely – bhs loso, smooth – full turn, nice – aerial to beat jump, perfect aerial body position – 2/1, stuck landing. Wonderful. I’d take for crossed legs on her dismount, but we’ll see what they do here.

Lee – FX – Auburn – DLO, secure landing, pikes down some at the end – switch ring to split leap full is perfect – back 1.5 to front full, controls step forward – 9.850

And Wong gets another 10.000. Well, here we are. It was so perfect on the beam.

Not to be left out, Sierra Brooks landed short on floor for Michigan with a hop forward and still got a 9.950 from one judge.

Thomas – BB – Florida – switch mount, to split leap, nice – full turn, good – one arm bhs to loso, right on – aerial to 2 feet, large break at the hops to horizontal for a flat .200 off – side aerial to 1.5 with a hop forward. Still goes 9.825, which is not mathematically possible because of the mandatory deduction on her aerial.

Michigan is in with the season’s first 198 a 198.125 final.

Gobourne – FX – Auburn – open double tuck, controls front foot – switch side to wolf jump full – front full to front lay, clean layout position – double pike, pulls it around, a little steppy on landing.

So Florida goes 49.475 on beam, Auburn 49.350 on floor with 9.950 for Gobourne.

After 3:
Florida 148.200
Auburn 147.825

“I guarantee you all gymnastics fans are going to be talking about her bars and beam.” I mean not wrong.

Rotation 4

Hollingsworth – BB – Auburn – full turn, nice – bhs loso, secure, good toes – swtich, small pause before switch 1/2, beat jump, slightly under on switch 1/2 – side aerial, correction to the side – gainer full, bounce back. 9.825

Brubach – FX – Florida – front lay to rudi, good lay, a bit of ragged leg form at the rudi landing – split leap full to popa – double tuck, large bounce back, keeps it in bounds – 9.825

Brusch – BB – Auburn – full turn, hit – aerial, keeps moving into split jump, a little under split position – bhs loso, solid – switch to straddle 1/4, back leg very low on switch split – gainer full, stuck. 9.875 is pretty high for the splits.

Nguyen – FX – Florida – front 2/1, hits it, small pause before a very pretty sissone position – switch ring to switch 1/2, good – y spin to full turn – 1.5 to front lay, some body position on layout. 9.900

“The low hanging fruit is to do a clap-along song.” Bart doesn’t often get blunt with us, but when he does, it’s very gratifying.

Stevens – BB – Auburn – bhs loso, hit, some feet – split jump to stag ring – kickover to knee, solid – wolf turn – 1.5 dismount, good stick. 9.875

Richards – FX – Florida – DLO, good chest up, some leg separation – switch side popa, tighter on the position – back 1.5 to fornt full, hop forward – and does it in the layout position this week – 9.925. Primed for 10s at the end of this lineup.

Groth – BB – Auburn – bhs loso bhs, right on – swtich to switch 1/2, good positions in the air but a large break, leg up to horizontal for .100 off – side aerial to tuck 1.5 dismount and a slide forward. 9.800

Wong – FX – Florida – piked double arabian! Connected to stag, excellent – switch 1/2 to popa to popa, real positions there – back lay 1/2 to front full, solid. Another excellent routine.

LOL 9.975 for Wong on that one. 39.825 AA score.

McLaughlin – FX – Auburn – switch, small pause before bhs loso series, good position – beat to side aerial, right on – swtich to straddle 1/4, tentative on switch position, small check on straddle 1/4 – gainer pike, chest forward and a hop. 9.875

Thomas – FX – Florida – DLO, correct – split leap full to popa to popa, crisply around – front full to front lay, right on, stuck, great layout position.10.000

That was the best routine we saw from Florida today.

Lee – BB – Auburn – wolf double, nice – split to sissone, nice – switch to switch 1/2, excellent – side aerial to loso loso, leg-up wobble on that today – gainer tuck full, nearly sticks and then takes an FML step. 9.875

Hurd – FX – Florida – front lay to front full, controls the step – switch ring to switch 1/2, comfortable – double pike, looked like back foot was OOB, chest forward with a step.

Auburn is done on 197.150, a bit under last week. Florida will improve on last week’s result with a 197.825. And now I’m off.

We lived through all those Bridgey anchor years so that Morgan could get this 9.825 in the anchor spot for Florida today.

  1. As of 7:35 EST FL vs Auburn hasn’t started. I have ESPN+ pulled up in case it starts there.

  2. Florida’s lineup is stacked this year. I feel like anything other than winning the national title is falling short.
