Settle in. Or, be like me and expend all your energy during the first session of Big Tens and then spend the next 7 hours in a score-resenting stupor. Either one.

Major events timeline

  • Is Iowa still alive? – At the conclusion of the first session of Big Tens (2:30 ET/11:30 PT), we’ll know if Iowa is still in the three-way race for the final regionals spot or not. If Iowa scores under 196.250, then Iowa is out.
  • Did Georgia get a seeding? – At the conclusion of SECs part 1 (5:30 ET/2:30 PT), we’ll know if Georgia got a regionals seeding (scoring 197.450+) or is at least still in it with a shot (scoring 196.700+)
  • Is George Washington still alive? – At the conclusion of EAGLs (6:00 ET/3:00 PT), we’ll know if George Washington is still in the race for the final regionals spot. If GW scores under 196.475, GW is out.
  • Did Minnesota clinch a seeding? Is Ohio State in it? – At the conclusion of the second session of Big Tens (7:30 ET/4:30 PT), we’ll know if Minnesota clinched one of the two remaining seeded spots (scoring 197.200+) or not, and whether Ohio State still has a chance to hang onto 16th place based on their score compared to Georgia’s/Minnesota’s.
  • Does Iowa State need to do anything? – By the start of Big 12s (7:30 ET/4:30 PT), we’ll already have final scores from Iowa and George Washington and will know exactly what score, if any score at all, Iowa State needs in order to make regionals.
  • Does Oregon State still have a shot? – By the start of Pac-12s (8:00 ET/5:00 PT), we’ll know whether Oregon State can still be seeded or if Minnesota and Georgia closed the door. And, if it’s still possible, we’ll know the exact score required.
  • What are the regionals? – At the conclusion of the second sessions of SECs and Pac-12s (10:00 ET/7:00 PT), we’ll know the final rankings of the top 16 teams and where they’ll all be headed for regionals. Allegedly.

Rooting for chaos: If you’re just here for the mess, today you want LSU to pass Cal with some huge 198 while UCLA also passes Michigan for 10th (but no one else), and all the other rankings to stay the same. That would give us the most complicated regionals host conflict to try to resolve in the most dramatic ways.

In addition to Iowa’s result, another thing I’ll be looking out for from the first session of Big Tens is Maryland’s score. Right now, some reasonable regionals projections have Maryland getting smeeshed into the play-in meets despite being ranked 28th, because of TeH gEoGrApHy. If I’m Maryland, even though I’m safe for regionals, I really want to move up in the rankings today, like say ahead of Towson, to try to avoid that play-in.

Illinois goes 49.275 on floor, which is the top rotation score thus far. Everyone else in the 48.9s for this rotation, Penn State having to count a 9.675 on bars, Iowa counting a couple 9.7s on vault. We don’t have a good angle for vault, but from our angle, I’m a little annoyed that the vaults with the best dynamics got the weakest scores.

After 2

Rutgers 97.450
Illinois 49.275
Nebraska 49.075
Maryland 49.025

Salcedo – BB – Penn St – full turm, hit – bhs loso series, large break at the hips, important stay on because it looked like she was going to fall – but a multi-tenth bend forward at the hips – split to straddle 3/4, gets it around – front full dismount, hop. 9.625

Vanney – UB – Iowa – toe on to maloney, leg spearation into pak, hit – 1/2 turn on low, short of vertical – DLO, very short landing, knee down. So already counting 9.675. 9.125

The bunching of these vaults scores is stressing me out a lot.

Masella – UB – Iowa – blind to jaeger, close catch buit gets it – bail, a bit shy – DLO, nice legs, small hop forward. 9.775

Aird – FX – Rutgers – lovely double pike position, controls step well – switch 1/2 to split jump full – front lay to front full, controls front foot – double tuck, keeps front foot down

Dildy – FX – Rutgers – front through to double tuck, little bounce back – switch side 1/2 to popa, slightly under on landing position – double pike, under control

With that 48.675 on bars, there’s going to be no way Iowa gets the score they need today. Nebraska’s counting fall on beam will drop them back of the Illinois/Maryland pace.

Fears – FX – Arizona – double tuck, chest up – switch side and a little into popa, hits split positions – rudi, chest down and uncontrolled bounce back – back 1.5 to front full, hit. 9.825

Widner – VT – Stanford – following a couple 9.825s – yfull, nice dynamics, bounce back. 9.800

Samiley – UB – ASU – blind to jaeger to overshoot – looks like she hit her feet on the mat – toe circle up to high bar and almost overrotates it but is able to grab the high bar – DLO – stuck

Hitting mat with foot is .3 on bars. Brush can be as low as .05

9.650 seems like they didn’t take the .3 though.

Deets – FX – Arizona – split ring jump full, step back – front lay to front full, under control – split leap full to popa, around – double tuck, nice control, chest up

So does beam exist as an event?

Scharf – UB – Arizona St- maloney with leg break into high pak, solid – close enough on 1/2 turn on low – short hs on high – giant full, late, has to add an extra giant before her double tuck dismount – so a UTL deduction. 9.600

Navarro – BB – Washington – already needing to drop a fall and counting a couple 9.7s – bhs bhs loso, hit with little lean – switch side, hit – full turn, hit – 1.5 dismount, hop forward. 9.800

Roberts – VT – Stanford – Y1.5, solid one, medium hop forward, bit of knees. 9.875

Killough-Wilhelm – BB – Washington – aerial, keeps arms going to bhs loso, step back, turn to the side, arm wave, so I’d say .15 or .20 on that wobble – full turn – switch to split jump, good – side aerial to 1.5, hop forward

Nguyen – VT – Stanford – we couldn’t see it with a teammate in the way (fun!), y1.5 landing takes her off the mat though. 9.725

Clark – UB – Arizona St – hits first hs – blind to jaeger, good feet – hits cast hs on high – pak, small break – 1/2 turn, good finish position – DLO, good position, stuck. Excellent. 9.900

The relatively non-crazy scores we’ve seen so far in these first sessions (stay tuned, we haven’t hit happy hour yet) is almost just as annoying because it’s like…you’ve been capable of this the whole time?

Drotar – UB – Arkansas – maloney to bail, nice vertical on bail position – DLO, stuck. Good. 9.875

Pac-12 Session 1 Final
Stanford 197.175
Arizona State 196.550
Arizona 196.475
Washington 196.325

Stanford is the only team that will use that as a counting score, which will almost surely see them move ahead of Georgia in the rankings, currently in 18th.

In qualifying news, George Washington started with a 49.100 on vault, so on track to stay alive so far.

SEC After 3
Missouri 148.025

Missouri 197.275
Arkansas 197.050
Auburn 196.775
Georgia 196.075

Not a counting score for any of these teams, so no rankings changes there.

That means no seeding for Georgia, and Minnesota has already clinched a seeding and no longer needs a score today. They’ll finish either 15th or 16th.

The last seeded spot is down to Ohio State, Oregon State, or NC State, and we won’t know who gets it until Oregon State goes.

Trouble for George Washington as they’re already counting a 9.5 and a 9.7 on bars with two people to go.

George Washington ends up going 48.125 on bars, which means they would need preposterous beam and floor scores to get to that 196.475 mark. Iowa State can start to breathe pretty easily now.

Worley finishes floor for Kentucky – secure FTDT landing – good straddle positions – front full to front lay, under control – double tuck, chest up, under control. 9.950

And we have a beam 10 for Ragan Smith as Oklahoma is trying to challenge the 199 mark.

Carey hits bars, doesn’t hold finish position though.

LSU is going to be just .025 ahead of Kentucky with one to go, but LSU gets to finish on floor.

McCallum anchoring floor where everything is a 9.950 – FTDT, feet, under control with chest up – switch leap to split full to popa, bit of control on landing – front lay to rudi, little rebound. 9.925

Cal only gets 9.750 from Perea. Just didn’t have it today for 49.200 on beam.

After 3 SEC
Kentucky 148.425
LSU 148.400
Alabama 148.200
Florida 147.850

After 3 Pac-12
Utah 148.500
UCLA 148.475
Oregon State 148.225
Cal 147.800

So Utah’s vault versus UCLA’s bars, huh?

NC State ended up going 197.550, which passes Ohio State. Oregon State needs 196.975 now, which would be a 48.750 on beam.

Just FYI a 49.825 for Oklahoma on floor would give them a 199. And the way things are going…

Rotation 4

Procasky – VT – Kentucky – hits yfull under control landing, comes in a little angled – 9.800

Blakely with a step back on double front bars dismount

McClain – FX – LSU – nice DLO, 1.5 to front full, under control – 9.925

Winger finds stick on her y1.5 to lead off for Utah, a little short still and some knees. 9.925

Campbell misses her feet leading off bars for UCLA on her toe on on low

Rizo VT – Kentucky – yfull, good height, bounce back

Nguyen – Ub – Florida – maloney to pak, small leg break – 1/2 turn on low – DLO, legs a little apart, small movement on landing

Drayton – FX – LSU – high DLO, lands a little deep in the knees – front tuk through to double tuck, chest forward, little shuffle – wolf 1.375. Still gets 9.850 out of it.

Waligora has a lean correction on loso series on beam –

Malabuyo – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, nice height, very small leg break – keeps her 1/2 turn on low together – short cast hs on high – FTDT, stuck. 9.850

Patterson – VT – Kentucky – excellent stick on her handspike 1/2. 9.925

Burgess – BB – Kentucky – one arm bhs to loso, secure – side aerial, nice control – hits switch side – gainer pike, stuck

KJ Johnson – FX – LSU – FTDT, nice control on landing – 1.5, some legs, into front lay, secure –

Rosen – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, nice – nice cast hs – DLO, a little low, holds onto stick with a lean. 9.900

Disidore – Ub – Florida – maloney to pak, nice – van leeuwen, legs together well – short cast hs on high – bounce back on dismount

Smith – VT – Utah – large bound forward on Omelianchik. 9.800

And we have 9.975 for KJ Johnson.

Finnegan – FX – LSU – double arabian to an out of control stag and maybe the wildest OOB avoid we’ve seen -good split leap full – 2.5 to front tuck is secure

Worley – VT – kentucky – y1.5, medium step forward, some knee –

Rucker – VT – Utah – hits her y1.5, small step forward and some knee softness. Still gets 9.950.

Frazier – Ub – UCLA – maloney to pak, good amplitude and legs together – hits her 1/2 turn position on low – solid cast hs on high – DLO, bounce back. 9.875

9.750 for Finnegan.

Oregon State counting a fall on beam now.

Wilson finish vault for Kentucky, can’t quite hold the stick on her handspring pike 1/2 with a step back

McCallum finishes with vault for Utah, ro 1/2 on tuck 1/2, medium bounce back and some feet

Torrez fifth for Oklahoma on floor, finishes with a controlled double tuck.

Esparza – UB – UCLA – maloney to pak, solid combo – short cast hs on low – hits van eleeuwen – short cast hs on high – DLO, legs apart, a bit short with a hop.

Wong – UB – Florida – maloney to pak, clean – hits cast hs on low – van leeuwen, legs together – DLO, holds landing with a little lean.

And Torrez has a 10 for Oklahoma on floor. They’re at 198.850 before Bowers. Can’t get to 199 but can set an NCAA record with 9.950 for Bowers, tie with 9.925.

Kiya Johnson – FX – LSU – good control on FTDT front foot – 1.5 to front lay, nice lay position and landing – double pike, high, little movement of front foot

Bowers opens floor with lovely front 2/1 to front tuck – double pike, under control, good.

9.975 for Kiya Johnson gives LSU the win on 198.075.

Bowers also gets a 10. Oklahoma scores 198.950, the highest score ever. Really thought we were getting a 199 in there for a while.

Harris – UB – UCLA – Ray, nice – small arch in hs on high – bail, good vertical – giant full into DLO, nice landing

Frazier – FX – Cal – DLO, chest a little forward, covers with a quick present – switch ring to switch 1/2 to sissone, lovely – split ring jump, excellent – front tuck through to double tuck, bounce back

FInal Pac 12
Utah 198.000
UCLA 197.875
Cal 197.325
Oregon State 196.775

Final SEC
LSU 198.075
Alabama 197.750
Kentucky 197.600
Florida 197.300

Final Big 12
Oklahoma 198.950
Denver 197.975
BYU 197.050
Iowa State 196.350
West Virginia 195.125

So, Oregon State’s miss on beam means NC State will take the final seeded position (!) and Oregon State will go geographically.

FINAL RANKINGS
1 Oklahoma
2 LSU
3 Cal
4 Florida
5 Utah
6 Denver
7 Kentucky
8 Alabama
9 UCLA
10 MIchigan State
11 Michigan
12 Arkansas
13 Missouri
14 Auburn
15 Minnesota
16 NC State

We get our chaos with Florida and Arkansas, and Cal and Michigan paired by ranking. So lots of adjustment will have to happen. We could even see Michigan bumped up to 9, Arkansas to 10, UCLA down to 11 and MSU to 12? Going to be verrrrry interesting.

  1. The only thing I want to see today is Ella Hodges win the floor title at Big Tens and hopefully finally get her 10. She’s had so many floor routines that were legitimately 10-worthy, but she is stuck in 9.95 land like Worley was most of her career. I don’t have high hopes though because Hooten, Wilson, and Brooks will be on floor after Ohio State and we all know scores tend to rise. Plus, her routine isn’t the pop music high-energy routine that NCAA judges tend to favor now. Anyway, go Hodges!

Other dreams: Widner winning beam at PACs, Campbell winning floor at PACs, Price winning floor at SECs, and Worley winning AA at SECs.

  2. Love Maryland and Nebraska’s leos. So pretty. The scores are showing up on Virti minutes before we see the routines on BTN. I can’t imagine my TV is that far behind.

    1. I’m actually trying to help Virtius monitor how their stuff works this weekend & was focusing on GECs so only just switched to Big10s. It looks to me like some scores are posting while BTN is still showing the routine, but it’s not every single routine. That’s relatively close to what I’ve seen using Virtius while watching meets on BTN in the past. Some of it is probably the time-delay all live sports broadcasts use so they can try to avoid being accused of showing things that are “inappropriate”.

  3. These judging ranges are so infuriating! It nothing ibjective anymore?? But we all know there’s nothing to be done about it. Sigh.

    1. I saw an article on ESPN last night where they were asking their gymnastics analysts about postseason predictions & what they thought about the state of women’s college gymnastics. Every single one said the scoring was often too high & needed to be reworked. Even some of the folks I think tend to be overly positive in their commentary, were critical.

      1. I don’t think the first session of the Big Tens was judged too crazy. I think the bunching is frustrating, but there’s no routine I can think of that was a big overscore. If anything, there are a couple routines I think that could have been a little higher (and likely would have been higher in other conferences).

    2. Which routines in particular? So far the scores seem very inline, no outrageous scoring yet. In fact, I thought a few scores for some could have been a little higher than the final score.

  4. I’m impressed with Maryland. I hope they continue this momentum into next season! I loved watching Minnesota break through and now Michigan State doing the same thing. I think Ohio State has incredible gymnastics and could be the next team to break into that top 10 in future seasons. Harris and Vetter are great leaders for them moving forward. The Big Ten is definitely getting stronger overall and it’s good to see (especially with the UCLA/Washington add too).

  5. March Madness and conference championships! This is my favorite Saturday of the year. I got my morning workout in. Snacks are plentiful. Now I’m ready for a day on the couch watching sports!

Predictions: Michigan State, Cal, LSU, NC State, and Oklahoma win.

AA: Brooks, Mich; Harris, UCLA; Bryant, LSU and Wong, UF; Sheppard, NC St; and Bowers, OU

Dreams: Michigan State, Cal, Kentucky, Clemson, and Denver

AA Dreams: Harris, OSU; Frazier, Cal; Worley, KY; Wells, Clemson; and LeVasseur, OU

  6. Because I have too much time on my hands, a few weeks ago I started watching all the archived US Gymnastics Championships (USA Gymnastics has most on YouTube) & some of the old Olympic finals. With all the frustration around NCAA women’s gymnastics scoring, it was fascinating to watch how judging changed through the period of the 10.0 scoring system. In the 80s, things were about where NCAA scoring was a few years ago. A decent score was a 9.8, but 9.9+ was very achievable & there were definitely some 10s that had relatively obvious mistakes, but it wasn’t completely egregious (both in domestic & international competitions). I think it was after 1988 that they started tightening up so that by the time they switched systems a 9.65 was very good.

  7. Not finding Pac-12 meet on their international YouTube stream. It’s showing baseball (or softball?). VPN set to Canada.

  8. The PAC 12 started their coverage talking about how routines will rotate with only two events going at a time. They even said the point is so that people can see more routines. They then only show one routine at a time and skip 1/2 of Washington’s beam rotation.

Meanwhile Big Ten had a split screen and showed every routine for 6 teams in session 1.

    1. Pac 12’s event streams errored out, too. I guess they have reason to just not care.

  9. Scharf needs to come out of the bars lineup. I don’t think she’s nailed one routine this season.

  10. I’ve had the privilege of seeing both live, and I found Brenna Neult a more captivating performer than Brooklyn Moors

  11. Gymnastics newbie, can someone help me understand what happened with Grace Anne Davis’ beam score for Mizzou?
I saw the foot shuffle between leaps and the extra hop-thing on the side flip (?) but I’m unclear what else I missed to contribute to a 9.5x score, bc that felt extra low to me.

    1. She likely didn’t get the leap series connection, which means her start value would not be a 10.

    2. The foot shuffle between the jump series meant she didn’t get the connection counted, dropping her start value. So beyond the deductions, the routine also didn’t start from a 10.0

  12. ESPN needs to pump up the arena/floor volume so that the audience at home can hear the floor music during the routines.

      1. Interesting. I’m on a text chain with 10 people all watching on TV separately and all of us thought the floor music volume was low. The only time it seemed normal was when only floor was being shown on TV.

ESPN often isolates commentator audio to ensure the audience can hear the commentary. This can lead to floor music and arena audio to be muted. It’s even worse when they have commentators remote during the regular season.

  13. “Aria couldn’t have done a better job.” She arched her first handstand and had leg separation on her dismount. I think she could have.

  14. I know we’re only halfway through the day, but after seeing Ohio State’s leotards I don’t think they can be beat. So stylish!

    1. I’ve always thought Payton’s style would be great for an Irish step dancing type of routine or do a band-type mash-up with Ohio State’s fight song and other OSU related songs.

  15. These Big Ten session two teams are on FIRE! What a great competition so far (hopefully I don’t jinx the last two rotations).

  16. MN coach carried chalk box across the floor for Johnson with great dignity.

  17. This was Minnesota’s best meet of the year. Ohio State didn’t have the landings on vault or beam, but they went 24-24 and were lights out on bars (stuck all 6 bars landings to end it). Michigan seemed off today. They still have great gymnastics, but I’m concerned for their chances to make Nationals. They are fortunate to be hosting this year. Lastly, great job Michigan State! Well deserved win after a fantastic year.

I’ll be cheering on all 4 of these teams at regionals!

  18. I hope other conferences watch this Big Ten meet and see the energy an on-campus meet brings. The large arenas that are half full are devoid of the energy and passion of on-campus arenas. I get schools want another away meet score for NQS, but I think they should reconsider (or just count all meets and get rid of NQS so every meet actually matters). Championships should rotate amongst the conference schools.

  19. For old times sake, kind of want this to be one of those years where Oregon State randomly pulls out the win for the last Pac 12 championship

  20. If you can’t perform on floor and only stick your tumbling, you shouldn’t get the same score as the other 20+ routines. Championships should have differentiated this, but obviously not.

  21. ACC meet scoring is bananas! May be the highest of all conferences by far (although this second session of PACs and SECs could get there).

    *haven’t watched Big 12s yet

    1. They are all starting to get crazy! Utah is just getting all kinds of gifts on floor right now and PACs vault scoring has been looser all day. SECs has also gone a bit high on beam and bars in the second session.

      1. Big 12s also has very loose judging! BYU just went 197.050 for a solid meet (not a 197-performance).

  22. The fix was in for MSU…and seems to be for LSU as well. No wonder why I’ve stopped watching NCAA gymnastics this year after being a devout fan for 25+ years.
The fact that MSU is allowed to have a team after the N***ar scandal is wild.

    1. Bad take. Michigan State deserved that win. Minnesota was close, but their vault needs work (outside of Hooten). Michigan and Ohio State were solid, but not at the same overall level of MSU and Minnesota today.

These athletes and coaches have nothing to do with the past. Good for them for fighting and winning!

      Take your gate somewhere else!

      1. Laughable. I agree the current team has nothing to do with the past but 2 things can be true in my opinion. I wholeheartedly believe that MSU shouldn’t have a team due to the complicity of former coaches. I know survivors of Nassar and it’s despicable that the institution or other governing bodies wouldn’t penalize the program that allowed the abuse to happen.
While both UMs weren’t their best today, MSU has benefited from overscoring the entire season; flexed feet, bent legs and other form issues. Despicable that judges don’t take for that…in all conferences.

      1. Don’t want to punish current gymnasts: they should’ve penalized the program back in 2015-2016 when it was proven how complicit past coaches and administrators were. Why doesn’t university release all documents? Something’s there…

    2. While it can be argued that from a human decency standpoint MSU should have shut the program down without prompting, I don’t think the NCAA banning the gymnastics team would have punished MSU because gymnastics isn’t a revenue-producing sport. It would likely have saved the school money, especially because they’d also have had to cut some male sport to keep within Title IX. If the survivors wanted the program gone, it should have gone, but I don’t think it would have felt like punishment to MSU.

MSU absolutely should have been punished much worse than they were, but the way to make it stick would be to hit them with things that would shake up the people/structures & force them to spend even more money. At minimum they definitely should have been forced to get rid of all the coaches & support staff/trainers who were around N***** (and not just from gymnastics) as well as anyone in the athletic department who was in the chain of command (including the AD, assistant AD, etc). All the replacements should have to come from outside the school & have no connection to the people running USA Gymnastics, with the exception of anyone specifically requested by one of the survivors still on the team & who the other survivors find acceptable. The NCAA should should also have done what they could to force MSU to completely renovate, update, &, as much as possible, redesign all the areas used for gymnastics & athletic medical care for women’s sports, preferably with input from some of the survivors. On top of that, the survivors should have been consulted about what other feasible changes/punishments should happen. Maybe some sort of permanent memorial to the survivors in a place where it couldn’t be ignored? 10 year gymnastics postseason ban?

In an actual ideal world, the NCAA would have been able to punish MSU with hefty fines & limitations on the actual revenue generating sports. Unfortunately it would have been challenged in court & the parts impacting the revenue generating sports probably would have been overturned. Look at what’s going on with University of IL being forced to keep a guy charged with rape on their basketball team & treat him as if there were no problems after the guy challenged the suspension he’d been placed on immediately. A (female) judge accepted the argument that the suspension would cause unrepairable harm to his life if he was acquitted because not playing would hurt his NBA draft stock & limit his ability to sign NIL deals. Courts accepting that sort of BS definitely wouldn’t allow the NCAA to punish a school by limiting a sport that had nothing to do with the reason for punishment.

While I don’t know anyone who is specifically a N***** survivor, I’m a sexual assault survivor (multiple times by the same person). I absolutely take these things seriously, but I also believe in finding punishments that force institutions to remember their faults whether that’s because of a physical reminder, by the number of years it takes to recover financially, or something else.

    3. You do realize multiple former MSU gymnasts were also victims of the abuse don’t you? Or are you just an absolute twat?

By your logic, USAG shouldn’t exist if MSU shouldn’t have a gymnastics team.

You’ve stopped watching NCAA gymnastics but yet you comment on the fix in for MSU and LSU without watching the meets.

      Grow up.

    4. No one at Michigan involved with the scandal is still there. Pointless post. Now USA is another thing

    1. I believe its one of the UMN drumline songs. At least that is what I think Olivia Karas said.

    1. So, will the next years see a post-2004 style judging crackdown, or am I being naively optimistic?

  23. Where is that commenter from earlier this season who said that the judges were conspiring not to give Oklahoma 10s?!?! They had 5 alone tonight. Good Lord.

    1. Almost 7 10s if Hannah VT and Audrey UB both went 10.0..team definitely would have gone 199.

  24. Dropping back in today to say that virtius is still not working aesthetically for me. It’s like someone decided every single thing they have in their crayon box should be used. And scrolling through each rotation with the R1, R2 and so on. Just not user friendly. The majority of people are not using this live, so it doesn’t need to be milliseconds fast. Just clean and easy to pop in from the bbs link.

    1. There is a “scores” button on the Virtius page that probably does most of what you want (without colors), but it’s not as obvious as it should be. Also, if you’re using a phone or tablet, holding the device in landscape makes the main view much clearer (due to screen real estate).

The Virtius developers really want questions/concerns/feedback so they can improve. They can be reached at support@virti.us & it might be worth emailing them. I’m finding them open to criticism & suggestions.

Their main target audience is people using it for live scores, which is much more common than you seem to think. That’s actually the only way I use it (and mostly how I use any of the score links on BBS). It’s used for many NCAA men’s gymnastics meets where often scores aren’t shown on the live streams. (When it comes to looking at scores live, I find Virtius substantially better than other live scoring sites/apps.) That said, if they want to expand, they need to take into consideration what the experience is like for people looking at scores after a meet is over.

      1. I use it for live scores, and I still hate it. I’ll take a small delay in getting the scores for user friendliness. I just want to see all the scores in the same screen.

  25. I do think the NCAA judging system needs to to overhauled and it’s not entirely the judges’ fault. the gymnasts are really REALLY good, I mean we didn’t used to have ex-Olympians and future Olympians in college gymnastics. Beam is the one event I won’t argue with but the bars routines need to be upgraded to score a 10 and there is no way a 2-pass routine on floor should score a 10. Yes, I agree that we should consider the athletes’ health. But a two-pass routine should start from 9.9, or if we are really going to do this, 9.8

    1. NAH. I would rather see a two pass routine with a double layout and front through to high double tuck than a routine with a front double twist, 1 1/2 twist to layout, with rudi dismount. Just need to reevaluate elements and their values.

It is time the Yurchenko full go back to 9.90 as it once was.

Maybe make additional requirements to start from 10.

But all the changes can happen in the World but if the judges can’t or won’t take deductions that are there, no sense revamping anything.

      1. I’ve started wondering if anyone with power in NCAA women’s gymnastics really cares about the judging as long as the scoring is consistent enough everywhere so teams end up mostly ranked according to their quality going into the postseason. Women’s college gymnastics is largely seen as an entertainment product & many fans like high scores. High scores also contribute to viral moments & bring in new or more casual viewers. Non-gymnastics people know the term “perfect 10” so that catches their eyes if they’re on social media. A video that says the routine was 9.8 probably wouldn’t get nearly as many views, even if it’s the exact same routine. College gymnastics is considered a non-revenue sport & in most places that’s true. Additional viewers/fans bring in more money to offset some of the costs of having a gymnastics program.
