| 6:00pm ET/ 3:00pm PT | UCLA Cal Oregon State @ Washington | SCORES | BTN+1 BTN+2 |
Headlining today’s schedule is the Pac-12 Reunion Tour, brought to you by the Big Ten. But, foolishly, they have named this meet the “Best of the West Quad” and completely ignored my suggestion of “El Jim Watson Clasico.”
Chiles is in the AA today for UCLA, anchoring everything except beam, where Alipio anchors. Sumanasekera and Rosen are also in the AA, with Sullivan on three (and ex. on beam) and Matthews on three (and ex. on vault). A troubling lack of Achampong in the Cal lineups. Paulsson is on vault, bars, and floor and ex. on beam.
Washington vault, Cal bars, Oregon St beam, UCLA floor.
Rotation 1
Aderinto – UB – Cal – Ray to overshoot is solid, good amplitude on overshoot, hits hs on high – blind to double front, small step. Clean. 9.850
Esposito – BB – Oregon St – aerial to bhs loso, very small adjustment at the end – check on full turn – switch split jump is very nice – 2/1, some direction, hop back. 9.825
Rosen – FX – UCLA – double just, just controls, good height – double pike is comfortable – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full – 1.5 to front lay to front tuck is out of control, OOB.
Lin – VT – Washington – yfull, pike throughout, hop back. 9.725
Buckner – BB – hits loso series and then has a large wobble on choreo – first week things – split jump to stag ring, wobble – side aerial more secure –
Newman-Achee – UB Cal – hits maloney to pak – 1/2 turn on low, past – FTDT, chest forward, step. 9.800
Tubbs – VT – Washington – yfull, not as much distance but comfortable direction, hop back
Webster Longin opens floor with hit front 2/1 – back 1.5 to lay, slide forward – switch 1/2 to wolf full is clearly around – rudi, comfortable, little foot adjustment – good twisting positions throughout
Cheek – BB – Oregon St – bhs loso, some knee and foot form but secure – full turn smooth style – switch to a short split jump position – gainer full, stuck with a stagger.
Wiley hits on bars, hop back on DLO. 9.800
Schaefer – VT – Washington – yfull, medium hop back, some more shoulder angle on the block. 9.725
Matthews – FX – UCLA – whip through to double tuck, little landing adjustment – switch side, overturns some on the landing into her popa – wolf double is under rotated – back 1.5 to front lay, loses some body position in the layout.
Bolden – VT – Washington – best yfull height of the bunch but a bigger bounce back. 9.725
Letzsch – BB – Oregon State – aerial, good extension, slow connection but gets it into back tuck with a wobble – split to split ring jump is nice, arm swing in combo – full turn, little adjustment – beat – gainer front layout full, stuck 9.850
Sumanasekera – FX – UCLA – DLO is comfortable, chest slightly forward – switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full, gets them around – back 1.5 to front lay, lands under-flipped with a step adjustment.
Still waiting on any floor scores for UCLA.
Brown – UB – Cal – nice height on Pak, legs together on van leeuwen – hits handstand – holds onto the stick on toe pike 1/2 dismounts. Solid.
Weaver on beam for Oregon State with a pretty large break on split jump – aerial is hit – 1.5 dmt, shorter landing with a step back.
Sullivan – FX – UCLA – gigantic amplitude on DLO, good controlled step, nice – split leap full to popa, shows position, lack of control on landing – front tuck through to double tuck is very low, chest down with a lunge forward
Paulsson – UB – Cal – good first hs – hits Pak – van leeuwen, legs together well – toe full is right on top – into double tuck, good feet, holds the landing, chest a bit forward. Excellent. She’s here. 9.925
Chiles – FX – UCLA – DLO is smooth, very clear control on step – tour jete 1/2 to wolf full, around – dive roll – front tuck through to double tuck, chest down, small hop forward, so probably should be .15 off there for chest down and movement in the wrong direction, but not much else – pike shushunova full. 9.925. Colleggggeeeeee.
Alipio in exhibition on floor, hits a double pike. Switch ring to switch 1/2 to wolf full – wolf double, pulls it around with a lean forward correction at the end – back 1.5 to front lay is a bit more trouble, leg position and a little low. But a hit.
Barros also in floor exhibition, near fall on final pass but did show a DLO.
After 1:
Cal 49.275
Oregon State 49.075
UCLA 49.075
Washington 48.675
Cal will be very pleased with that start, a comfortable rotation showing that they still have the roster depth to put up a clean six on bars. Steps on landing, but the handstands and foot positions are still there. Paulsson’s bars debut the highlight of the rotation.
Everyone else largely just working through it January 3rd-ish-ly on that first rotation, no catastrophes. Some errors from the UCLA freshmen on floor that you wouldn’t expect to continue once they have a few more meets.
Rotation 2
Sumanasekera – VT – UCLA – yfull, shows the solid amplitude, good position in the air, larger bounce back. 9.800
Mayhew – BB – Cal – loso series, pretty large wobble, turns to the side and an arm wave to keep it on – switch to switch 1/2 is comfortable – holds onto the stick on 1.5 dismount
Amyimi good open on yfull on vault, bounce back. 9.800
Lin – UB – Washington – clear hip – gienger is hit into overshoot, leg break on catch – some hip angle in handstand – FTDT, step back. 9.675
Lee – BB – Cal – aerial to split is good – bhs loso large break, bend over at the hips and grabs her tights – switch 1/2, somewhat under split – gainer full, little bounce
Vargas – FX – Oregon St – hits double pike, chest somewhat down – switch side 1/2 to straddle jump is solidly done – front full to layout, lower amplitude – switch side to split jump full is also nice
Rosen – VT – UCLA – y1.5 hit, bound forwwrd and some knee tucking. 9.800
Oppegard pikes down DLO dismount on bars but hits it.
Melkonian – BB – Cal – bhs loso, secure – switch ring isn’t quite to ring – beat to split jump 3/4 also secure – full turn – 1.5 dismount, hop forward.
Miller – FX – Oregon St – double tuck, bounce back – switch full is good – switch 1/2 to popa – Baely Rowe is making sure we all know about cheating leaps and I appreciate it – back 1.5 to layout, solid amplitude
Jenkins – VT – UCLA – has improved that y1.5, step forward. 9.825
Aderinto – BB – Cal – bhs loso, foot adjustment wobble – full turn, check – switch 1/2 to split, nice split position, just a bit tentative on landing – gainer full, hop back
DeVries – FX – Oregon St – back 1.5 to front full, under rotated to land with a crossover stagger step –
Sullivan – VT – UCLA – is very comfortable with the 1.5, good amplitude, lunge forward
Scanlon – BB – Cal – wolf, hit – bhs loso, secure – 1.5 dismount, a little short with step back
Good giant full to double tuck dmt on bars for McDonough, high and clean.
Chiles – VT – UCLA – DTY, good height, little hop back, small leg separation at the end. Very nice. 9.900. If she’s landing this one like that, it’s the better form choice than the 1/2 on tuck.
Matthews yfull in exhibition. 9.700.
Tubbs – UB – Washington – toe on to maloney, loses a hand on backswing, one hand off, and has to extra cast to resume.
Good stick from Newman-Achee on beam dismount in the anchor spot. 9.900
Esposito – FX – Oregon St – front tuck to double pike, shows landing control, nicely done – switch side, over turns slightly into split full, good split positions, terrible camera angle – front lay, good rise into rudi, some leg position and a little bounce. 9800
Paulsson does beam exhibition for Cal, large break on loso series with bend forward at the hips, another check on front aerial. 9.650, but she’ll obviously need to be in the lineup as we move forward.
After 2:
Cal 98.300
UCLA 98.225
Oregon State 97.750
Washington 97.400
UCLA gains back some ground on Cal after vault. They’ll want to add in a few more 10.0 starts and control the 1.5 landings more, but a solid first meet out. Cal through a fairly shaky beam rotation with some large wobbles but stayed over 49. Oregon State drops back with some landing control issues on floor, Washington able to drop the Tubbs miss but does have to count a 9.6 on bars.
Rotation 3
Rosen – UB – UCLA – toe on to maloney to pak, smooth – past on 1/2 turn on low – DLO, tries to hold onto the stick but a large lean arm circle forward. 9.775
Oppegard – BB – Washington – bhs loso, secure, chest lower – switch to switch 1/2 to beat, well completed – full turn, check – side aerial, larger wobble, step back and arm wave – gainer full, sticks with a stagger and chest down
Rude – VT – Oregon St – handspring onto the board, handspring front pike, lands suuuuuper deep
Silvers – FX – Cal – double tuck, legs apart some – switch 1/2 to wolf 1.5 – back 1.5 to 1/2 to double stag, a few leg separations but a solid one
Miller – VT – Oregon St – round off full on back tuck, step forward. Oregon State getting points for not doing all the same vaults. 9.725
Barros – UB – UCLA – pak is good – a little shy on hs on low – van leeuwen, legs together – DLO, step back. 9.800
Lin – BB – Washington – bhs loso, secure – switch to switch 1/2, chest before beat jump, short back leg on split positions – 1.5 with step to the side
Buckner with a few steps on yfull on vault
Webster-Longin’s dismount landing was obscured by the scores but the rest looked clean.
Tubbs – BB – Washington – aerial, good leg position, connects to bhs loso, comfortable – beat to split jump 3/4, hit – full turn – very clean until short landing on gainer dismount with step. 9.875, scores rising here
Matthews – UB – UCLA – hits Pak – good hs on low – van leeuwen, initiated with a leg separation – DLO, deepish with a hop forward
Melkonian – FX – Cal – double tuck, good control, chest a little forward – switch ring is short of ring position here as well – 1.5 to layout, better height, small leg separation
Pretty yfull for Esposito on vault. 9.850. Sticks.
Sullivan – UB – UCLA – Tkatchev to pak, good height – past vertical on 1/2 turn on low – DLO, some early pike, bounce back. 9.850
Paulsson – FX – Cal – front tuck through to double tuck, chest down with a crossover step back – switch 1/2 to wolf position that was rushed and a little under – double pike, good position in the air, nice amplitude
Chiles – UB – UCLA – piked tkatchev to high pak, good – rushes 1/2 turn on low as well – good handstand on high, DLO is strong, holds onto it. 9.925
Good 1.5 beam stick for Hallinan.
Keuneke – FX – Cal – punch rudi to a back…something, sort of a tucked straddle layout stepout save – switch 1/2 to wolf has nice feet positions – back 1.5 to 1/2, chest forward, into straddle jump – wolf double cleanly around –
Sumanasekara in exhibition on bars (was originally in the lineup instead of Barros), looked good.
Mayhew secure landing on front 2/1 to front pike, good control on landing – a little under on switch 1/2 position – back 1.5 to front full, also well controlled
After 3
UCLA 147.450
Cal 146.975
Washington 146.675
Oregon State 146.600
UCLA pulls away in rotation three. Solid bars showing from them with depth to spare as Cal’s depleted roster for 2026 catches up to them some more on floor with some lower amplitude. Washington gets a huge beam score to move up ahead of Oregon State heading to floor.
Rotation 4
Miller – UB – Oregon St – toe on to maloney to pak, comfortable – muscles up 1/2 turn on low, past vertical – DLO, chest forward, holds onto stick with lean. 9.750
Rosen – BB – UCLA – switch to split, good positions – beat to onodi, big wobble, lean forward at the hips, turn to the side – bhs loso is secure – good stick on 1.5 dismount. 9.825. That bend at the hips past horizontal should be a 0.2, so they must have said she kept the chest at horizontal for 0.1. Or just whatever.
Paulsson – VT – Cal – yfull, some pike throughout, small hop
Caso nearly sticks double tuck on bars but arm wave and then a step back. They’re having a case of the nearly-stick-and-then-actually-give-away-kind-of-a-lot. You know, that?
Matthews – BB – UCLA – switch to split, hit – side aerial to bhs is secure – wolf single – 2/1, larger bounce back, but good stuff on the beam.
Newman-Achee – VT – Cal – good stick on yfull, nice one.
Cheek arches over and falls on bars for Oregon State.
Sumansekera – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, good height, secure landing – aerial to beat – split jump, a little too much pause before split ring jump, not quite a horizontal split shape – 1.5 dmt, holds stick with a stagger.
And we have our first 9.950 for Sumanasekera. The beam scores have been goingggg there for the last couple rotations.
McWilliams – FX – Washington – rudi to loso is secure and high – switch side 1/4 to straddle jump – double pike, chest down but good control.
Silvers hits Y1.5 on vault with a bounce forward.
Richardson on bars for Oregon State – hits piked jaeger, shortish hs on high – pak – 1/2 turn on low – vertical hs on high – FTDT, holds landing. Good one.
Webster-Longin – BB – UCLA – bhs bhs loso, squeezes onto it, little movement – beat to switch 1/2, wobble, saves it with a step back – 1.5 dmt, step forward. 9.800
Casey Brown yfull, nearly sticks but ends up with a lean forward and a step forward.
Weaver – UB – Oregon State – gienger a little close but legs together well – giant full, nice foot position there into double tuck.
Chiles – BB – UCLA – bhs loso, solid, comfortable – cat leap to switch side, holds securely as well, good straddle position – full turn – side aerial, nice – 2/1 dismount, stuck. Excellent. And we have a 9.975. It was coming. Baely says she had a check on full turn but I didn’t catch that.
DeVries sticks her DLO on bars to finish up for Oregon State.
Alipio – BB – UCLA – full turn, little adjustment with a flourish cover – bhs bhs loso, quick snap arms down to avoid movement – side aerial, secure – split leap to switch to beat – gainer tuck full, holds stick. 9.925
McDonough gets ejected into a step OOB on her last pass on floor to finish things up for Washington.
UCLA goes 49.525 on beam as the judges hit happy hour, cruising to a victory in this meet where their depth and quality was far beyond the other teams who are trying to build out competitive rosters rather than narrow down routines.
Cal gets to exactly the 196 mark, which you definitely take. Enough to demonstrate that the death of Cal gymnastics was highly exaggerated.
FINAL:
UCLA 196.975
Cal 196.000
Washington 195.625
Oregon State 195.550
