National Team Rankings – January 2019

How It Works
Taking into account all scores recorded at competitions in the last six months, each nation is given a team total based on how its best-scoring group of five senior gymnasts would do in a hypothetical 3-up, 3-count team final.

Each individual’s best scores may come from any official competition (they need not all be from the same meet), and whichever group of five gymnasts would produce the highest score is the one selected.

Countries that have not shown enough senior routines in the last six months to fill a 3-up, 3-count team on each event are not included.

Rankings will be updated at the beginning of each month, and scores will expire after six months in order to provide the most up-to-date snapshot of where nations are at the current moment. The current rankings include only scores from July 2018–December 2018. Now that 2019 has arrived, the newly senior 2003 babies have been added, noted with a “(2003)” next to their names.

Rejoining the rankings this month were Ireland and Guatemala, and dropping off was Cyprus.

Last month’s ranking is in parentheses.

Flavia Saraiva 14.533 13.000 14.667 14.233

Jade Barbosa 14.600 13.550 13.300 13.600
Lorrane Oliveira 13.367 13.650 12.950 13.033
169.115 43.999 41.700 41.833 41.583
Brazil lost a few tenths this month but managed to hold steady in 3rd place even without the scores from the crazily overscored Sabotage Nationals,
4. (6) FRANCE – 168.467
M De Jesus Dos Santos 14.666 14.400 13.733 13.966
Lorette Charpy 13.800 14.133 14.050 12.833

Juliette Bossu 0.000 14.600 10.700 0.000
Coline Devillard 14.800 0.000 10.200 12.600
168.467 43.366 43.133 42.033 39.965
The French gymnasts begin competing in their domestic Top 12 series at the end of the year, the December edition of which was quite a boon for Lorette Charpy who scored a 14.050 on beam to bump up France’s team total.
5. (4) RUSSIA – 168.219
Ksenia Klimenko (2003) 13.366 14.333 13.533 13.033
Angelina Melnikova 14.555 14.433 13.466 14.033
Lilia Akhaimova 14.600 12.900 12.733 13.600
Angelina Simakova 14.333 12.650 13.400 13.333
Daria Spiridonova 0.000 14.600 0.000 0.000
168.219 43.488 43.366 40.399 40.966
Russia lost nearly two points this month as the scores from the Russian Cup expired, while the majority of the major players elected not to compete at December’s Voronin Cup, missing an opportunity for some domestic goodies. Russia really needs some home beam scoring right about now. We do see new senior Ksenia Klimenko join the highest-scoring five, gaining a smidge over potential teams with Aliya Mustafina or Irina Alexeeva.
6. (5) JAPAN – 168.065
Asuka Teramoto 14.650 13.733 13.300 13.400
Mai Murakami 14.900 13.800 14.000 14.333
Hitomi Hatakeda 14.066 13.933 13.133 12.950
Natsumi Hanashima 14.866 12.633 12.666 13.033
Mana Oguchi 0.000 0.000 13.550 13.600
168.065 44.416 41.466 40.850 41.333
Gains made from the typically charitable All-Japan Team Championships were counteracted by the loss of scores from June’s All-Japan Event Championships, so Japan ultimately stayed about where it was. Hanashima’s score for a hit rudi made up for Miyakawa having not recorded a score in the last six months.
7. (13) ITALY – 166.031
Giorgia Villa (2003) 14.800 14.166 13.633 13.850
Elisa Iorio (2003) 14.166 14.200 13.133 12.700
Martina Basile 14.000 12.400 13.000 13.233
Alice D’Amato (2003) 13.500 14.050 11.950 12.200
Lara Mori 13.500 12.950 12.800 13.800
166.031 42.966 42.416 39.766 40.883
Italy has been waiting for this. A gain of six ranking spots is built entirely on the storm of new seniors bringing what is now the majority of the counting scores on each event, revolutionizing Italy’s bars situation in particular.
8. (11) GREAT BRITAIN – 165.640
Becky Downie 0.000 14.600 12.500 0.000
Amelie Morgan (2003) 14.166 13.400 13.500 13.233
Ellie Downie 14.400 14.000 13.300 13.233
Kelly Simm 14.050 14.275 13.033 13.066
Alice Kinsella 14.333 12.150 13.450 13.150
165.640 42.899 42.875 40.250 39.616
Great Britain was able to add new senior Amelie Morgan to the five with counting scores on three events, keeping the overall total steady as most other nations in this portion of the rankings dropped points while idle in December.
9. (9) CANADA – 165.546
Ellie Black 14.566 14.000 13.900 13.266
Shallon Olsen 14.800 0.000 12.833 12.966
Sophie Marois 14.416 8.433 12.700 12.900
Brooklyn Moors 13.333 13.066 13.133 13.500
Ana Padurariu 0.000 13.833 14.100 0.000
165.546 43.782 40.899 41.133 39.732
Canada did not send athletes to competitions in December, so there’s minimal change here, only some June scores from Onyshko that no longer count, dropping her out of the highest-scoring five.
10. (10) NETHERLANDS – 165.481
Celine van Gerner 0.000 13.733 13.400 13.300
Sanne Wevers 0.000 13.733 14.750 0.000

Naomi Visser 13.766 14.000 13.100 13.500
165.481 42.532 41.466 41.250 40.233
11. (7) GERMANY – 165.383
Kim Bui 13.650 14.400 12.750 13.350
Sophie Scheder 13.550 14.150 13.450 12.900
Pauline Schäfer 13.600 13.466 13.500 12.766
Sarah Voss 14.433 12.900 13.600 12.750
Elisabeth Seitz 13.900 14.900 12.700 13.150
165.383 41.983 43.850 41.250 39.600
The loss of some critical June scores from Schäfer, Scheder, and Voss sent Germany down four spots in the rankings and more than a point in overall total.
12. (12) BELGIUM – 164.266
Axelle Klinckaert 13.800 13.450 13.550 13.400
Nina Derwael 13.750 15.300 13.766 13.400

162.833 42.533 40.750 40.350 39.200
Zsofia Kovacs has competed fairly prolifically in the last couple months, boosting Hungary’s totals on all four pieces.

161.898 42.032 40.766 39.800 39.300
The removal of the scores from Ukrainian Nationals sent Ukraine down the rankings, but the introduction of the scores from Bachynska brought Ukraine back up to what is still a quite respectable—and now fairly realistic—ranking.

  1. Thank you once again for this amazing analysis. Look forward to this review every month.
YAY for Belarus. Also, Italy is relevant again with the 2003 girls in place. I honestly feel as though they have the best chance in 2019 to knock off Russia or China for bronze.

  2. Ocolisan is retired 😦
Losing her DTY is a big blow so I hope that Ioana Crisan, Laura Iacob, Carmen Ghiciuc and Nica Ivanus can upgrade their fulls to doubles.
Romania’s scores on this are also quite a bit more realistic than some ranked above them, so I hope that with the (hopeful) return of lari by the end of the year that they can place 12th at worlds.
