Lots and lots (and lots) going on today, but I’ll be focusing my attention on a couple of well-spaced meets. There’ll be plenty of time for these SEC teams as we go through the season.
It’s a brave new world we have with the Michigans here as MSU enters as a pretty clear favorite over Michigan, which is…not really something that happens.
Big preliminary lineup news for Michigan State as Schulte is back in there on floor and Tucker (who missed the last meet) is in on vault and floor. Also Michigan is using both exhibition slots on every event, so it’s going to be a long one. Don’t they know they’re supposed to finish before Florida/LSU starts?
Rotation 1
Tucker – vt – msu – y1.5, solid stick, a bit of knees and direction. 9.900 starts us off
Parenti – ub – michigan – tight first hs – maloney to pak is clean – shortish 1/2 turn on low – short hs on high – dlo, good stick. 9.800
Duplissis – vt – msu – y1.5, pretty large lunge forward, knees, 9.825, pretty high
Jordan – ub – michigan – good first hs – hits jaeger – legs together on bail – solid hs throughout – gaint full to double tuck, hop. 9.825

Diaz – ub – michigan -maloney to pak, legs together, shorter on bail hs position – dlo, good stick. 9.900

Vore – ub – mnichigan – hits tkatchev – bail, solid fight there – short hs on high – dlo, another good stick. 9.850
Stephen – vt – msu – y1.5, a bit more of a struggle, big lunge forward and off direction. 9.825 is just what you get.
Bauman – ub – michigan – good first hs – blind to jaeger to overshoot, nice positions – double front, step back. 9.900 with a step.
Kellerman – vt – msu – hs pike 1/2, bounce back, solid chest position from this angle. 9.850. Judge 2 goes lower for this one than Stephen’s.
Ranger – ub – michigan – Ray is hit – bail, a little hip angle – tighter hs on high, dlo, step back. 9.775
Nice 1.5 stick from Doyle in exhibition.
After 1: MSU 49.350, Michigan 49.275
Michigan trails but good improvement in comfort and security in that bars rotation today. Scores loose and bunched so far. Clapper appears in bars exhibition for Michigan.

Kellerman – ub – msu – good first hs – jaeger, good feet – bail, slight angle in the air, gets to vertical in the end – dlo, stuck. good one,. 9.900

After 2: MSU 98.675, Michigan 98.450

MSU 49.325 beam to Michigan’s 49.150 floor.
After 3: MSU 148.000, Michigan 147.600
Michigan State on strong 197 pace, and they’ll expect a big floor number here based on how things are going. If Michigan can hit beam, this will be a big improvement total for them as well.
In other news, Auburn will have the lead on Arkansas after 1, 49.200 to 48.925. Boise State will have the lead on Georgia 49.125 to 48.975. Kentucky leads Alabama 49.300 to 49.175.
OK sorry Michigans, but your 4th rotation is running into Florida/LSU. But Beaufait has started msu with a 9.9, so we can see where this is going.
Bryant still on just beam for this one. KJ Johnson still out. Broadcast says Bryant on floor. Not listed there yet,.
Rotation 1
Zeiss – vt – lsu – y1.5, small hop, off direction, lots of knee form. 9.775

After 1: LSU 49.350, Florida 49.025
Not an awesome rotation for anyone but Aleah Finnegan. LSU has a pretty sizeable lead after 1. Vault scoring very landing based and nothing else based. We’ll see how this scoring holds up when they switch events.
We have a final, Michigan State 197.500 to Michigan 196.975. Big numbers for both.

Thought someone would be at 99 at this point honestly.

Ferris – fx – florida – ftdt, shows control – switch side 1/2 to popa, a little under rotated – 1.5 to layout, also under control, not too much rise in layout. 9.875
Chio – bb – lsu – bhs mount, nice – loso series, secure – switch to split, good positions – aerial to split, secure – bhs 1.5, stuck. Very good. 9.925
Sloane Blakely – fx – florida – ftdt, well done – switch 1/2 to split full, good height, some feet – back 1.5 to front full, good amplitude, just does control back foot. 9.950, it’s going now. Got a 10 from one
McClain – bb – lsu – switch to switch 1/2, good – aerial to bhs, smooth – lean on choreo – side aerial, hit – good wolf – gainer full, little movement. 9.900

Dunne – fx – lsu – front tuck to double tuck chest up – switch to switch ring 1/2 – double pike, little rebound – ring jump full, not quite ringing and some control – 9.875
Pilgrim – bb – florida – bhs loso, solid – cat leap to aerial secure – switvch to split leap – bhs gainer full stuck. 9.900

FINAL: LSU 197.550, Florida 197.450
Will be controversial because of Aleah’s impossible floor score, though that was hardly the only impossible score tonight.

If you are going to be tight on scoring be tight, if you are going to be loose be loose. But one meet having tight as crap scoring (auburn and Arkansas on bars) and loose scoring (Michigan state/Michigan creates a huge disadvantage for teams on the tight end. At the end of the day I know the top teams are the top, but it does affect post season seeding. I just want consistency.
Agreed. I am an Arkansas fan and it seems they just can’t get breaks other teams do – or at least the benefit of the doubt
Yes! Im an Auburn and feel that way about both Ark and AUB And I think the scores for Auburn and Arkansas are fair and closer to accurate…maybe just a little stingy. But they are low if compared to what other teams are getting around the country tonight.
What do make of the way LSU anticipates their landings and ends up in a woncky squat? It almost seems like they bend their knees even before they land. It looks clunky and awkward, but should it be a deduction?
Oklahoma usually lands feet apart and with a butt-out squat position. They pull their heels together for no deduction. It annoys me, but it absolutely works. Kindler knows what she is doing. I’m actually surprised more teams don’t use the same method on landings. My boyfriend, who is not a gym fan, calls it the Sooner Pooper because he thinks it looks like they are trying to poop.
Someone needs to immediately submit the judges at LSU/UF for review, so many impossible scores
Well, we know LSU will be getting the first 10 of the season on floor
For your gifs, Spencer, the shot of Simone and Cecile inching their respective husbands to stand in the right place during the Georgia meet fluff piece will…live rent free in my head for a long time.
I’m confused about the panel of judges that judge the judges. Do they communicate the results to the meet judges? Is there any punishment for the judging being off besides maybe not getting to judge at the championships? Because this does not seem to be working so far.
In sport climbing, you can not only appeal your own score, you can appeal another athlete’s score if something was potentially improperly awarded. They should do that in NCAA gymnastics.
